Another afterburn set

2020-10-27 Thread Larry Colen
I went for a bike ride yesterday on about 7 miles of Swanton road. If you’re
in the area and want to do a little sightseeing that can really humble you,
ride or drive on Swanton Road. If you want to park at the South end, park on
Davenport Landing road, near the beach, it’ll cross 1 at Swanton. I parked at
a pullout near a farm, pretty much at the start of the burn area.

I don’t have any pictures that do justice to the view up miles of charred
hillside, but it’s the sort of view that can show a person where they rate in
the world.

It’s a small set, 14 photos

Re: Use of GPS in cameras?

2020-10-27 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I don't generally use or include the GPS information in my posted photos from
any of my cameras that had or have GPS capability in the camera. I don't find
it generally all that useful for my photography because I'm either not going to
be back at a particular location if it's 'out there' to shoot again, or because
I know exactly, intimately where a photo was made anyway and can get back there
easily. Since most of my photography is not documentarian in intent anyway,
where a photo was made is only rarely of much importance to the intent.

It is fun to see where photos that have the GPS info are on the LR Map display,
however. :)

And if I feel that I want GPS information in a photo that I'm posting, for some
reason, I usually know that when I make the photo and just snap another shot of
the scene with my iPhone camera, then copy and paste the GPS information over
to the main camera's image file. Takes two seconds, and my iPhone is nearly
always with me anyway—no need for a dedicated GPS device.

Re: Use of GPS in cameras?

2020-10-27 Thread Stanley Halpin
My story: Long long ago, those of us on this list were discussing our wish
lists for the first Pentax DSLR (or maybe it was in anticipation of the 2nd
one), I said at the time that I wanted to have GPS location/direction recorded
so that I could know where I had been standing and what direction I had been
looking. It took awhile, but I finally had my wish, first as the GP-01 add-on
gadget, then built-in.

Meanwhile, I had the chance to spend 5-6 days in Northern Italy, generally in
the Verona region. We did a couple of drives around Lago del Garda, multiple
stops at small fishing villages, brightly painted boats, nice reflections in
the water… Back home, I looked at those photos and just kept muttering “where
were we? Which village is this one?” Putting together a Blurb photobook, I like
to be able to caption images with the name of the location.

I bought a Garmin handheld, made sporadic attempts at cross-linking the Garmin
data with the time-stamped images from our travels. Then finally! At last!
Whenever it was that the GP-01 came along, then I was happy. Even happier when
the GPS went built-in and I didn’t need the clunky gadget on top of the camera.
I have actually looked at location data only a few times since, but when I
wanted it, it was quite reassuring to have it. Two examples. Easter Island. Two
days of being taken around for short-to-medium length stops to see the figures,
etc. I loved being able weeks later to look at the data to see where on the
island we had seen a particular statue. Similar story in the Galapagos. 6-7
days around the archipelago, landings on 5 (?) of the islands. i like having
the GPS data to tell me which side of which island given shots were taken.
Occasionally I think about going back there again. If I start to make serious
plans for return, I will be using the GPS data to identify the particular
islands I want to revisit and thus which itinerary to choose.

So, for me: is it critical? No. Is it a nice feature that I much appreciate
from time to time? Yes.

I often carry the Ricoh GRiii which does not have GPS. I occasionally do a
snappy on my phone for location recording. Taking pictures of street signs or
building name plaques or the like can also help to substitute for GPS. So,
again, it is not critical, there are work arounds if a camera doesn’t have it,
but I find the GPS feature useful and have the GPS turned on 100% of the time
when that option is available to me.

Re: Use of GPS in cameras?

2020-10-27 Thread John
I think I've turned it on a couple of times. Don't remember when or why. I've
also used the Astrotrace function a couple of times.

Looking at the photo in the announcement, it looks like it doesn't have a pop-up
flash. IIRC, the reason the K-1 doesn't have a pop-up flash was to make room for
the GPS.

If the K3 III doesn't have GPS, what are they using that space for?

1. Being able to tell where a photo has been taken.

So far, I always carry a Garmin handheld with me and then tag my photos
from the Garmin's track data using HoudahGeo. Having the camera do this

Re: Use of GPS in cameras?

2020-10-27 Thread Henk Terhell

Igor, I also remove location for most of my pics on flickr and instagram.
However, I have learned to much appreciate the GPS for reporting to the
Dutch website of nature observations (waarneming.nl).

Here you can report animals, flowers/plants and mushrooms.
An AI program analyzes the identity on your picture and provides  a
percentage of accurary of its (or your) determination for its validity.
If uncertain, there are experts looking at your picture to provide comments.
Also the program automatically retrieves the location from the GPS
coordinates and pins it on the map so you don't have to  estimate it
afterwards.
Personally I find it unsatisfactory to show somewhere a pic of flower,
insect or mushroom and not knowing what it is, so I like this reporting.
There are already 76 million observations for this Dutch program and
more than 100,000 users.
Of course for some very rare species the location can be hidden so
people do not rush to this spot!

No doubt similar programs exists in other countries.

Many good compact camera's do have GPS built-in, but strange enough not
many DSLR's and MILC's.

Re: Use of GPS in cameras?

2020-10-27 Thread lrc
I use gps with astrotracer a lot. I also find it very handy when trying to
return to previous locations, like if I want to redo a photo. It's also handy
for noting the location of wildlife.

I wish that lightroom had a means of grouping photos by gps rather than just
time. That would be really handy

Use of GPS in cameras?

2020-10-27 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi All!

In the K3-III thread, people have been disappointed about the lack of the
GPS capability in the new APS flagship.

So, that got me thinking: how do people use GPS in their cameras?
What are the "use cases"?

I can see that people using astrotracers might need GPS. Also, if you are
taking travel photographs, it might help you to create a "photo
journal/map" of your trip.

But what about outside of those cases?

K-1 is the first dedicated camera (i.e. outside of the cell phone) that
has a GPS capability, but I have not turned it on yet.
(I was thinking about doing that during the trip to Yellowstone/Grand
Teton parks, but I didn't have good spare batteries on hand, so, I was
preserving the batteries, as one day I got very close to empty.)

Also, all my export presets in LR have "remove location" from the photos,
- to avoid some unnecessary accidental exposure with the photos posted to
the web. (I am not a celebrity, and not being stalked, but it is just a
general privacy precaution.)

Cheers,

Igor

Re: The 2021 PUG - Themes & High Res

2020-10-27 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Brian,

I would suggest a slight modification of some of the suggested topics.
(I think this way, it might open the theme for broader interpretations,
thus inviting some out-of-the-box contributions.)

Close up -> Up close and personal
Food -> Calories for Intake
Eggs -> Eggstatic or Eggcentric
Snow -> "Snow what?" or "Is that snow?"
(I've decided against Every Snow Often, I suppose snow, I told you
snow, but feel free to use any of these.)

I don't remember if we had this theme, but if we hadn't, we should (given
the habits of the PDML):

   Puns

Additionally, I suggest a theme that allows broad interpretation:
   Cogito ergo sum.
(The phrase by René Descartes, meaning "I think, therefore I am", but
everybody probably know that.)

I hope this one will inspire some fun photos.

While I was writing all of this, I saw some comments from others.
I sort of agree that "Eggs" might be a difficult theme for some.
Seeing that some people do not like Farm, and others do not like Garden,
I'd suggest combining the two into "Farm and [or?] Garden".

(Farm-O-Gardon ;-) )

Cheers,

Igor
