RE: OT a bit of personal news

2021-03-26 Thread jcoyle
Jan and I are so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother, Larry, but, as with
mine last year, when the time comes it can be something of a relief. The grief
will last a while, but will fade.
As to the rest of your news, sounds almost like a clean start for you - which
can sometimes be a really good thing. Good luck with the job search, it's not
easy at 60!

Subject: OT a bit of personal news

The good news is that I’ll be driving up to the Oregon coast tomorrow, a place
that I’ve found very rich in photographic opportunities.

The fraught news is that I’m doing so to bury my mother who passed away this
morning. She was 90 years old, and over the past few years there was less and
less of her there. In short she had a critical case of time to go. My
emotions are a mixture of pain and relief, but I’ve basically said goodbye for
the last time every time I’ve seen her for the past four years.

I also got fired today. I’ve been hating my job more every day for a while
now, so this also isn’t entirely bad news. Finances may get a bit tricky for a
bit, but with luck I’ll be able to get a new job that is actually in my career.
Even light construction is nowhere near as much fun at 60 as framing houses
was when I was 20.

One bit of unequivocal good news, my Pentax 18-270 lens arrived today. It’s
been a bit awkward carrying both the 16-50 and the 55-300 on my bike, plus I’d
invariably have the wrong lens mounted for whatever photo presented itself. A
few days ago I found it on Ebay for $200 and I decided that buying it would be
one of my better mistakes this week. We’ll see how the IQ works out. If it is
as good as my Tamron 18-250 was it should definitely be adequate. I do wish it
were weather sealed, but I’m less likely to ride my bike in the rain.

GESO: Early Spring Flowers

2021-03-26 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Because of the deep and long-lasting snow, my flowers are behind schedule
this spring. In addition, so far the number and variety of those that have
appeared (especially the crocus) are disappointing.

The warm temperatures yesterday and today have produced some progress,
although my daffodils are quite far behind what I have seen in other areas
of town. So far, this is the best I could find:

PESO Birthday Bird

2021-03-26 Thread Paul Stenquist
Had some time to sit outside and enjoy the sun yesterday. My knee has
deteriorated to the point where I can’t stand for long without the joint
separating (surgery next month), so I’m now shooting from a lawn chair. I can
make that work with the tripod, but it limits my range, so I’ve take to using a
monopod with a ball head. That’s working fine for me. This guy was high up in a
spruce tree. I upped my shutter speed from 1/500th to 1/1000th for this shot,
but I’ve found I can still shoot at 1/500th as well. Shake reduction on, 630mm,
f8, 1/1000th. Cropped to about 50% of frame

Sorry to hear the news Larry. I have been there, done that with the process of
telling someone goodby several times over a few years as they fade away. It is
never easy, and despite all of that it is still a saddening shock to hear that
there will not be another opportunity for another goodby. I hope your coastal
drive gives you opportunities to remember the good times.

Commiserations/congratulations according to your mood of the moment. Your
pictures of your mother, for me, appear to show more than the surface, which is
always good for portraiture.

Larry,

My condolences for your mother.
You do look capable enough to deal with all that.
I very much hope that your next message will include
images made with your new lens.
I will not be surprised if they turn out to be made under heavy rain.

Bulent

Re: OT a bit of personal news

2021-03-26 Thread John

Sorry 'bout your mom.

The good news is that I’ll be driving up to the Oregon coast tomorrow, a
place that I’ve found very rich in photographic opportunities.

The fraught news is that I’m doing so to bury my mother who passed away this
morning. She was 90 years old, and over the past few years there was less
and less of her there. In short she had a critical case of time to go. My
emotions are a mixture of pain and relief, but I’ve basically said goodbye
for the last time every time I’ve seen her for the past four years.

I also got fired today. I’ve been hating my job more every day for a while
now, so this also isn’t entirely bad news. Finances may get a bit tricky for
a bit, but with luck I’ll be able to get a new job that is actually in my
career. Even light construction is nowhere near as much fun at 60 as framing
houses was when I was 20.

One bit of unequivocal good news, my Pentax 18-270 lens arrived today. It’s
been a bit awkward carrying both the 16-50 and the 55-300 on my bike, plus
I’d invariably have the wrong lens mounted for whatever photo presented
itself. A few days ago I found it on Ebay for $200 and I decided that buying
it would be one of my better mistakes this week. We’ll see how the IQ works
out. If it is as good as my Tamron 18-250 was it should definitely be
adequate. I do wish it were weather sealed, but I’m less likely to ride my
bike in the rain.
