OF course. DSLR is, for the most part, better than mirrorless for focus
accuracy.

I did this handheld and before leaving for work this a.m. No time for a tripod.

Also, the Sony is more pixels but the Pentax still looks generally better.

Now if I put the 77 on the Sony … it would best any of their lenses.

Yes, they’re both older hardware. But comparisons of top-end equipment are
still useful.

The Sony A7RII was equipped with the G24-105/4. The K-1 with the 77/1.8
Limited. Two outstanding lenses.

Both of these pairs are crops from the same image (1 P, 1 S) to show both
detail and DOF.

Sony image at 98mm, f4, 1/100, iso 2000.

Pentax image at 77mm, f2.2, iso 400.

Neither sensor was accurate on the brick color. The Sony had too much yellow
and the Pentax too much red. Reality was about half-way between the two. I
wonder what the digital version of the 77/1.8 would have done with the brick
color.

The 77 was better on edge sharpness, though the 24-105 is quite respectable for
a zoom. (I understand that there is a next gen of the f4 zoom that is even
better. Sony is doing a good job, though quite pricey.)

Both lenses do render DOF quite nicely. Though this isn’t formally a “macro”
shot, some lenses do exhibit too much curvature in close-up work. Both of these
perform nicely.

I don’t have a Pentax zoom that is the equivalent of the Sony or I would have
used it. The 300/4.5 might have been a bit unwieldy.

The short of it is this, and it’s something we all know: Pentax still holds its
own. I state this because people sometimes need this type of reassurance.

Also … why do I have two bodies? I have two because the SLR works much better
when shooting anything that might be in motion while a mirrorless body works
better for streaming, recording, and informal gatherings (due to general
compactness).

The little I have used it so far … results of course look like a mirror lens.
That’s to be expected. It compares favorably to the Tokina & other mirror
lenses that I’ve used in the past. It’s certainly better on the contrast side.

Its big advantage would be for travel where space is a consideration.
Especially going overseas where weight charges might be a concern.

In a couple of weeks I’m going to try to shoot a local nest pair of bald eagles
with it. And I’ll compare it to the F\*300/4.5. Of course the F\* will be
optically way above it. But when it comes to function in the field, that’s a

Your input is appreciated.

Fortunately I won’t need it to survive. Just hoping that my fun hobby produces
a few $$ to compensate. I find the time minimal (for Shutterstock) when I have
shot a lot of similar-class but different images. That meant time/count, and
worked out well. Time spent per individual picture can be overwhelming.

Again, next step is also to see what is popular at any given time and shoot

That’s my goal. To go through all my decades old chromes and negs to find the
good ones plus future shooting. I’m looking at retirement this next year. Might
as well let the equipment generate some income.

In 2013 I met a retired couple in PA. He shot a lot for stock. A DSLR for
action and a Sony mirrorless for stills. Seemed to work well for him once he
learned what was selling at any given time, which seems to be as much or more
important than sheer volume.

I do bare minimum PS Elements work. Being just a bit old-fashioned, I depend on
the optical design first.

Perhaps I should invest in decent PS/LR.

K-1 II, I have the FA28/1.8, F50/1.7, and F\* 300/4.5. Might be nice to have
the FA24/2. Really mixed on LTD lenses. The 43/1.0 resolution is nice but the

Re: How good is old gear?

2023-01-16 Thread collinb
The one big improvement with many of the newer computer designed and
manufactured lenses is sharpness in the corners. But when it comes to the full
image at F5.6 or F8D many of the older lenses are equal to today in most
respects. Of course, with digital sensors the coding change does help control
reflection off the sensor surface. That’s what I’m told. But better old lenses
under controlled lighting … I’m having no problem. Just keeping away from the
sun flare.

That said, the newer computer designed zoom lenses are sharper across the
range. But your classic prime lenses, no sense and not using them. They’re
good. I did it a couple months ago with an old Konica AR lens, 57 mm f1.4.
Optical design is everything, whether computer made or mechanically ground.
That lens serves as evidence to me that rendering of the image is far more
important than simple resolutions. The Konica has a much flatter field than
anything else I have and that focal length range, including the Pentax.

In short, there are advantages to some of the newer lenses but as you have
found many of the classics remain the equal of the newer models. For all
practical purposes.

First time birding

2023-01-14 Thread collinb
Wanted to go to my favorite city park to shoot today because, as so rarely
happens on a central Ohio winter day, the sun came out. I parked at the first
open trail and there was this bunch of fat birds working to survive the winter.
This crop is about 1/9 the original. It’s just a square out of the center.

http://collinbrendemuehl.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/bird1.jpg

I shot about 30 images but too many had bush branches in the way.

A cardinal pair came by for a visit but they were too skittish when I started
to move with the camera.

K-1, F\* 300/4.5

Next time I’ll remember the polarizing filter. But even so this isn’t too bad.

Ann San wanted to go to this park many years ago but wasn’t able to stop in
Columbus. I used to shoot a lot here. It’s area is > 1 section, so not too much
different area than Central Park. We just have statues, hawkers, or hookers.

That’s what the scuffs look like. I found one in Japan with a broken rear cell.
Wouldn’t take much to swap out the front glass. But the cost of int’l shipping
makes it unreasonable unless I can get it for $10. It’s a cheap enough lens
that I might be better off selling it and getting the 67 version for only about

Re: Pentax is considering releasing a new film camera

Remember this:

There are things, still, that you can do with film that you can’t do with
digital. B darkroom stuff like split printing & still greater color depth on
chromes (w/ pro scanning).

There are things you can do with digital that you can’t do with film. Varying
regions of contrast stands out to me.

There are things that both can do equally well. Shoot with a Petzval lens. A
very unique image form that cannot be precisely duplicated in digital
processing.

My 2 cents.

Three from a resort in the Branson, MO, area with the 75mm and the rest from
Pictured Rocks (MI) with the 165mm on a monopod while on a moving boat. (That
was interesting.)

Photographing a guitar

2022-01-11 Thread collinb
A few years ago I did a nice violin shot in b That was fun.

Recently I’ve re-started playing guitar and would like to shoot it in b
(classical)

Any thoughts or examples on lighting, display, and such? Much appreciated.

(Also, just finished my second round of Covid. August was pretty rough. This
time around, not so bad.)

Another move P sighting

2022-01-11 Thread collinb
Wife wanted to watch the remake of Sabrina. Harrison Ford version. Meh.

It appears that all, certainly most, of the cameras used were Pentax.

It began with a 6x7 fashion shoot. And lots of 35mm work. I may have missed
some non-P stuff there.

Pentax-F 50/1.7 on a5100

2021-08-05 Thread collinb
Ok, I’m not totally switching. Not even partly.

Just wanting to see how well the Pentax-F 50/1.7 works on the a5100.

It works pretty well.

The only problem is focusing in bright light. What a pain with no viewfinder at
all. I think on of those shoe-mount gizmos form the 50s might be in order.

Anyway, I shot an image with the K5 & a5100, both with the same lens.

Obvious improvements come with both resolution and sensor generational
improvements. (Would be fascinating to see that with a current sensor.)

I was debating getting a Zeiss for the Sony and maybe a matching one for a
K-70. (K-5 is for sale.) Maybe. But I’m wondering about one Zeiss (ZK) and that
pricey adapter. Or a 31 & the adapter. Either way all good results.

I was also surprised to see how long the K-70 has been on the market. Five
years is several lifetimes in the tech world. Amazing.

\*\*\* side note. Pentax rear lens caps work for Sony rear lens caps.

Re: Re: Dilemma

2021-08-03 Thread collinb
Thanks for the info. I was aware of the limited production but not of the
allocations. I’ve see a variety of speculations about the specifics of the
anniversary (75th, 1Mth, 2Mth) but that’s sort of immaterial as it remains an
anniversary model.

Limited

Went to a local camera store today. They’ve got a black 31/1.8. $650. I drooled
a little, but not on the lens. The first one I’ve ever touched.
