miles from the area, but in Naples and surroundings (not to mention Rome) many
people got awaken by the tremors. I wasn't sleeping so I did experience the
quake. It seemed harmless here compared to the one in 1980 that hit my region,
but it was a disaster for the city of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, and the small
 medieval towns of the area.

Right now the numbers say 150 victims and 7 evacuated people.

it takes practice. Sometimes people are just too absorbed to notice what
you're doing. Other times they notice, but let you have the shot. And of
course, quite often they don't want you to take the shot so, depending on
the situation, you either walk away or grab it anyway.

Some photographers can make themselves invisible somehow. In fact, the more
you take this kind of photo the more easily you can make yourself invisible.
I think it is something to do with confidence, observation and knowing when
 to raise the camera.

John Malcolm Brinnin wrote a memoir of the time he spent travelling around
the US with Henri Cartier-Bresson. In it he describes how HCB took about 20
photographs of one woman just walking from one room to another, with HCB,
and the woman didn't even notice. He also describes them going to a gambling
den - For more than an hour he photographed the play at pool tables and
slot machines, working so unobtrusively that his subjects seemed unaware of
him or, if they were, unperturbed by the intrusion of a presence so patently
 bland.

So the secret of good photography is this: be patently bland.

choose:
- More than 32 levels of BW rendering i.e Pinhole, Holga, Antique
solarization and so on.
- ISO 32 Kodak Panatomic X
- ISO 50 Ilford Pan F Plus 50
- ISO 100 Agfa APX Pro

Ambulance ride to Markham-Stouffville hospital, X-rays and Cat scan
showed two small fractures, one in left pelvic area and one in left
 hip socket.
Lots of pain, i guess that's to be, but its not serious enough for an
operation or hospital admittance. Bed rest and no weight on the left
 side.
They wanted to send her home last night, but three nurses could not
get her out of bed. We told the doctor we would feel better if she at
least stayed over night, and she did.
Home care can be arranged, Liz and I, working that split shift can be
helpful, but i'm still a bit ticked off, they wanted to send her home.
How do we get her in the house.
Apparently we can get crutches and she can use them if she needs to
get from bed to the toilet, but we'll see how that goes.
A rider friend stopped by to see her, and she went through the same
thin a few years ago, and offered encouragement.

 Time will tell.

This puts a damper on her new promotion at the farm, she is now the
 assistant barn manager.

 Yikes, Dave!

I'm just seeing this thread for the first time now. Hope Erin's
feeling a bit better by now, but it sounds like she'll be in pain for

Assunto: Re: Hello!! It's me again!

Manuel,

The DA*50-135/2.8 lens takes a 67mm snap in lens cap. Tamron makes
caps of almost the identical design that sell at BH Photo in NY for
$9, and could likely be found in Portugal or elsewhere in Europe or
the UK for equivalent money.

The Pentax logo'ed lens cap you're looking for is available from
Pentax Imaging in the USA for $13. Plus shipping to me will bring the
price up to about $20. To ship it to you would then cost between $24
and $30 ... total is now $50. PayPal will charge an additional ~4.2%
(combined currency conversion and handling fees) which nets a total of
$52.

So if you are willing to pay $52 for a 67mm lens cap, I'd be happy to
order it for you and ship it. You'll need to pay for it prior to my
placing the order. Any excess payment, given the vagaries of postage
and Paypal fees, I would donate to charity.

If you're interested, send me an email.

Godfrey

 Assunto: DA*50-135 Lens Cap

 Hi everyone

I recently got myself involved with the acquisition of a DA*16-50
 and a
DA*50-135. Hard work but I got them!! Sold my MZ-s and and battery
 grip
and... more stuff than I'd like, but got those beauties!!
The next step is to sell the house in order to get an 24'' iMac. I
 think
that I will be able to post some pictures in a couple of weeks.
 Hopefully
not mine with suitcases at front door.

Well the fact is that with the excitement of changing lenses I lost
 the
front cap of the 50-135. I looked in the pentax web store and there
 she
was... the PTX 31521. The problem is that they won't send it to
 Portugal.
The local pentax dealer is very very slow in managing to solve our
(pentaxians) problem. So here I am asking for the help of PDML
 community.

I am willing to pay for the shipping to Portugal and the cost of the
 cap
that I am sure will be less than the the shipping. Unless that
 someone in
Europe can manage to get me that cap.

 Thanks in advance,

 Manuel

RE: Question: Has digital photography improved your skills?

2008-05-10 Thread Manuel Magalhães
Hi Steve,

I own a K20d for just about one month, but I feel that I wasted a lot of
time in the learning curve of photography while in film. The ability of
checking what you have done and if it was the picture you saw before you
took the shot, did improve my photo results in the way I always wanted. One
thing I do that stayed the same: I do'nt take more shots than before just
because it is digital and I can delete them. I stay as criterious as with
film regarding the shots I want to do.

Best regards,

Manuel

Just curious that's all, I'll be getting a digital soon too. If you can't
beat em, join em, lol. The wife blew off
87 snaps yesterday at a school event yesterday, she is in hog heaven. I
guess the point I am trying to get across
is if you have the ability to fire 20 shots at the same subject, are you
going to take the same amount of set-up
time for f/stop, exposure, background, composition, etc. as you would with
film?

Assunto: Great compilation of PESOs/GESOs/PAWs

Hello,

While I haven't posted much for months, I've sat silently and read the
PDML once in a while... I've always been quite impressed by the average
quality of PUG, but also PESOs, GESOSs, and PAWs...

Since almost 2 years, I haven't discarded any PDML e-mail, and it
occurred to me that I could compile all those PESOs into a nice database
with links to the actual images...

A few lines of code and here it is (at least, a preliminary version of it):

http://www.lacouture.nom.fr/pdmlpesos/

There is a list of the latest 3663 PESOs, PAWs and GESOs, with the
original PDML message, including links to the actual images (as they
were in the messages).

Of course, many of these links are now broken, and my parsing engine may
have done outright errors (typically in interpreting the message titles
to determine PESOs/PAWs/GESOs).

For now it's a bit crude. However, if there's sufficient interest in
this work, I might give it some extra effort for nicer look and
features, such as grouping/searching by author, type (PESOs vs GESOs),
keywords, displaying PDML member comments threads, or whatever we could
imagine...

Enjoy, and as usual, feedback is welcome.

Patrice

PS: Of course, Great in the subject refers to these images for
quality, and to the compilation itself for quantity :-)

Shot out my car window at f4 with continuous autofocus on the K20D

blasting and mars lights flashing. Some have said the continuous
autofocus on the K20D isn't improved because Pentax hasn't said it's
improved. After almost 4000 exposures, I'm sure it's improved. It

Thanks Manuel.

Well, it *is* a Leica lens! ... Like the FA43/1.9 Limited on the K10D,
it has only rarely left the E-1 or L1 for the past several weeks. It
instructs me once again just how incredibly versatile and useful a
high quality, fast normal lens is ... what camera body it's on is
hardly of any note.

I haven't posted this one to the lists yet ...

The detailing at f/1.4 is simply extraordinary, this small web rez
rendering doesn't do it justice.

RE: troubleshooting a damaged memory card

2008-04-21 Thread Manuel Magalhães
Hi Christine,

This is the problem with SD cards. Sometimes they get more sensitive than
we'd like. A friend of mine that is more experienced than me in digital,
avoid as much as possible to take the card out of K10D. He connects the
camera to the pc and upload the photos.

Hi Everyone:

I had to take 3 quick shots of something to send to someone in an email. I
shot the photos, put the memory card in the card reader in my PC tower,
couldn't get the PC to read the card.

I then took a quick shot on a different card, and the PC read that card just

fine.

I looked up Help it was recommended to wipe the metal contacts with
alcohol.

Has anyone used this remedy? Do you suggest a different remedy? I'm pretty

sure the card in question is the one I bought with the K10D last June of
2007. It's a Lexar Professional SD 2gig 133x speed. (As is the 2nd card I
used.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Christine

I've seen no sign of any difference in 'sensitivity' comparing SD
cards with CF, xD and Memory Stick cards used over he past 6 years
and 160,000 exposures. I never connect camera to computer, I always
use a card reader, and I've had exactly the same amount of reliable
operation with all of them.

Once in a great while, the reader will fail to recognize a card.
Usually just unplugging and plugging the reader back into the
computer, forcing its drivers to reload, solves any such problem. It
happens with all cards now and then ... just happened for the first
time in months with a CF card ten minutes ago.

Assunto: A bit of knowledge about LightRoom

Hi!

LightRoom (starting from 1.3 as it seems) uses ACR Cache directory for
its, well, cache. Those of us who don't have Photoshop CS3 are in fact
unable to change the settings of this cache directory easily.

Here is what I found (Windows XP):

1. The cache itself is in:
C:\Documents and Settings\your acct name\Local Settings\Application
Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\Cache by default.

2. You can delete the files from there as you see fit. Though of course
it is better if LR is not running when you do so.

3. There is a file called index.dat in this directory. If you make this
file read-only, you will effectively disable the caching all together.

4. However you can do better than this. You can add the following two
lines to the file: C:\Documents and Settings\your acct
name\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\Defaults\Preferences.xmp:

crs:NegativeCachePathD:/_CACHE/ACR Cache/crs:NegativeCachePath
crs:NegativeCacheMaximumSize20.0/crs:NegativeCacheMaximumSize

You have to place these lines before this one:
   /rdf:Description

Notice the slash direction. The size of the cache is in GB's.

The information has been taken from here:
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?14@@.3c055fdb/0

I hope it will prove useful at least to some of you.

Cheers!

Boris

due to scheduled maintenance. Please try again later.
And this is lasting for a few days.Anyone's getting the same thing?

Best regards,

If that doesn't do the trick, then try this
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/lightroom/win/1.x/
You should be able to manouver to the mac version from there if that's

Does look a lot like a lens from a set of glasses. The rippled reflection

RE: Pulitzer

2008-04-11 Thread Manuel Magalhães
P. J.
By more and more present I meant exactly that. I am an oncology product
sales rep and I spend my days in oncology related hospitals. In spite of
more earlier detection of cancer pathologies what I see is more young
patients doing chemotherapy. The outcome, I don't know in the vast majority
of cases, but I am confident that the early detection associated to better
chemotherapy and support care, can produce what we desire, the cure. But
that does not alter what I whiteness every day, and the pain, and the
courage.

I'm not sure what you mean by more and more present, but really the
reason this is such a tragedy is that is so unusual for a relatively
young healthy woman to die prematurely. From the 1840's, when good
record keeping became a general to about 1910 statistics show that young
women were very vulnerable to typhus, cholera, child birth, small pox it
was truly horrible, popular songs reflected just that, Listen to the
Mocking Bird, which was adopted by the 3 Stooges, actually find the
words and read them. . There was a culture of death or rather dealing
with death throughout the Victorian Age. If you go to any relatively
old cemetery you should count the headstones of you woman who died in
their late teens to early thirties. The numbers are sometimes
astounding. We should mourn the loss of this young woman, but be very
thankful it happens so much less frequently today.

the baseball cap on a man's head, and the man is standing outside of

First Digital Experience

2008-03-27 Thread Manuel Magalhães
Hi guys,

Out of lurking mode. And I really mean out! As some of you can remember I am
a proud owner of a MZ-S and a Super A and since January I felt the urge of
digital. I was not happy with the results of scanning 35mm photos because I
didn’t own a scanner and had to rely on Frontier. No good. As I said, in
January I asked a good friend of mine and pdmler Pedro, his DL and started
shooting just digital (so I have a MZ-S to sell). I will show some examples
I took in a foggy morning in Porto and in a week-end in Douro Valley. One
thing I want to add is that the learning curve with digital is really
surprising, at least to me.

Oh, and now I am a proud owner of a k20d eh,eh,eh!

Best regards,

Manuel

My son has just walked out of a carpentry apprenticeship 2 years in,
after a rather unpleasant time there. He's since been doing bits of
work here and there in order to pay the bills, and has just started
working with his friend's father in his metal fabrication business. It
looks like he's found something he enjoys, and is teaching himself how
to arc-weld.  I managed to get him to let me grab a couple of shots;
here's one I like.

http://picasaweb.google.com/petergly/OnePhoto/photo#5071375848423957826

EXIF: 1600 ISO, 1/30 @ f/5.6. A28mm f/2.8 lens used.

Haven't used high ISO's on my ist-DL much. I like what I'm seeing,
though. And the 28mm lens seems to be a good one on this camera. All
questions re workplace safety are to be sent directly to him... ;-)

Ciao,

A translation was done by Katsura at Pentaxforums:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/35557-post1.html

Basically, there will be replacement models for K100D and K10D this year,
and they promise that it will not be trivial changes like *ist D* updates.

A higher end model is still in the works, but it does not sound like it will
be ready any time soon.

8 or the remaining 9 lenses on the roadmap will be out this year; more are
on the way.

Hi.

This time a smaller GESO (sorry for the last one, too big, I know).
Finally I'm reviewing some photos taken with the *ist DL (in my 20
iMac, it is a pleasure) and found some interesting photos (for me at least).
All photos taken with A-series lenses (A-24/2.8 and A-70-210/4).
The place is the old side of my hometown, Porto (Portugal), near the Rio
Douro (Golden River).

Hope you enjoy and feel free to comment.

A friend of mine is going to Frankfurt, and would like to buy second hand
photo stuff. Would anyone be to kind to give me some directions about this.

Many Thanks,

Manuel

Hi Robb,

Have to come out of lurking mode to congratulate you for that wonderful dog.
Here is my friend Alexander Von Riesen, a two year old Giant Schnauser.
