Re: GESO: Swan Lake (Lagoon?)

2016-06-27 Thread Nicole Jacque
Thanks!

I don’t know if it was technically a lagoon or not, but it was a small body of
water separated from the ocean. I didn’t follow it far enough along to see if
it connected with the ocean farther down or not.

I didn’t have a very wide angle lens, but I just counted 29 swans in one
picture, which doesn’t cover all of the area. It was quite thick with them.

Nope. I was there pretty late, and there were a few tourists still around, a
few runners and bikers, and very, very few people on the beach.

There was, however a young woman sitting in a lawn chair, arms crossed, and
looking rather irritated sitting in the corner of the parking lot, facing
towards the parking lot, away from the beach, which I thought was odd. (The
beach, and a nice view was only a few yards in the direction opposite the way
she was facing.) I passed her several times over a period of about an hour or
more. Just before it really got dark, a man came over to her, and she
proceeded to ream him out about “leaving her hanging while he was taking stupid
pictures”. (I was taking pictures of some birds not too far away, and their
voices carried loud and clear.)

Re: GESO: On and off track

2016-06-13 Thread Nicole Jacque
Buy lots of Apple products — my stock plan, and therefore racing budget, will
thank you!

I am running nationally — although I may try to fit a regional in somewhere.
Nowadays they call the National events SCCA Majors…

Mid-Ohio seems like a fun track. However when I was there a week ago, I had
never been there before, wasn’t able to get in a test day, and so had to try to
learn the track in the middle of qual and racing, in the middle of a 50-car
field, in off and on rain. (Mid Ohio in the wet on slicks was an adventure!)
I’m looking forward to getting a test day in so I can figure it out without
being relentlessly dive-bombed every 10 seconds.

GESO: Lick Observatory

2016-06-13 Thread Nicole Jacque
Yesterday was my birthday, and Larry and I spent the first few hours up on
Mount Hamilton taking pictures near Lick Observatory. While Larry fiddled with
his fancy K1, (not that I’m at all jealous, or anything) I took pictures of the
various Observatory domes, some of which were in use, as well as got some shots
of lightning from a storm off in the distance.

https://flic.kr/s/aHskyeaUL7

Oh, and for my birthday, Larry gifted me with his Pentax DA 40 lens. By which
I mean, he wrapped up the box in aluminum foil and gave it to me, as the lens
had already taken up full time residence in my camera bag.

I’m not embarrassed :-)

Here’s a picture of me at the runoffs at Daytona last year:
http://www.motorsport.com/scca/photo/main-gallery/nicole-jacque-t-2/

Borelli Motorsports used to be my pit crew, but they were a nightmare. Also I
now have a car on each coast, so for East Coast, and major races, I now run
with Phoenix Performance (http://www.phoenixperformance.net) which has been
fantastic so far. Their drivers won T1 and T2 at last year’s runoffs. (and
other victories in various classes over the years) They also run in Pirelli
World Challenge, and TransAm.

Nothing planned for Michigan, but I’ll be at NJMP next weekend, Watkins Glen
the following, Portland the next… Then sometime in August, I’ll be at Mid-Ohio
for a tuneup before I compete in the runoffs (SCCA National Championships) in
September. It would be great for you to come out to a race!

Very cool! Just looked at the article, and it looks like the car will be out
here at Laguna Seca for the Historics races in August, which is a favorite
event of mine (even though I don’t get to drive). Maybe I’ll get pictures of
it then!

2016-06-13 Thread Nicole Jacque
At Seattle I was driving my Spec Mustang: https://flic.kr/p/HXEobm
and at Mid-Ohio, I was driving my Touring 2 class Mustang:
https://flic.kr/p/J7rPuT

I photographed race groups that ran at times that didn’t conflict with my
schedule, so it’s kind of random. At Seattle, that ended up being group 1,
which was E, F, and H Production, GTLite, STL, and Touring 3, and Group 2,
which was various formula style cars. At Mid-Ohio, I photographed group 7
(which I had friends running in) which was all the GT classes, American Sedan,

Yes, the very low light conditions meant I had to shoot at f/1.4 and hope.
Thank you for the feedback on the photos — selecting/pruning down photos is
something I struggle with, and I really appreciate getting your opinion as well
as the rationale behind it. I really wish the guy in NAJ54762 had a more
interesting expression — ah, well, perhaps I selected it for the photo I hoped

PESO: Inside Larry's mind

2016-05-26 Thread Nicole Jacque
Igor pointed out that I buried the link to this picture deep inside another
thread, and it really does deserve a little more exposure.

https://flic.kr/p/HuH1up

I, of course did not edit the photo at all. That thought bubble just follows
Larry around….

GESO: Pics from BluesQuake

2016-05-25 Thread Nicole Jacque
You’ve all seen Larry’s photos, here’s my version of BluesQuake:

https://flic.kr/s/aHskx7ZRij

I didn’t get to spend as much time editing as I’d like, unfortunately — this is
the crazy season at work before our big developers conference… I did have a
chance to play with my 360 degree camera on the dance floor though. I haven’t
had a chance to do anything with those yet. Hopefully there’ll be something
interesting there to share.

Re: no mas mark

2016-05-15 Thread Nicole Jacque
At a company as large as Apple, name collisions are common, even for people's
full first name last name combination. I had a co-worker who had the same
first and last name as four other people at Apple. They started putting their
department name as a middle name in the directory to try to make it easier to
be found (and get less email intended for their name doppelgänger)

Until recently, I had two people in my group at work named Mishal. (One of
them recently left for a startup) Neither one of them had ever encountered
someone with the same name before. There is no one else in all of Apple, even
internationally, with the name Mishal. And they both end up on my team.
Conveniently, they both did the same type of work, and had offices next door to
each other.

Re: PESOs: I'm looking at you & Surf's up!

2016-05-13 Thread Nicole Jacque
Yes, pruning my photos is sometimes a challenge for me. I find it helps if I
get someone (Larry) to do a quick rating of which photos they like/don't like
on albums before I post, but life has been so busy lately I didn't get around
to it.

The pigeon worked out even better than I expected -- glad I noticed him there
under the pier!

Re: PESO: Mustang

2016-05-11 Thread Nicole Jacque
The new Mustangs are *very* good, especially from a bang for the buck
standpoint.

The GT350R is simply amazing. I had a chance to flog one around the track at
Laguna Seca for a couple of laps before they started shipping. Revs up to…
seems like infinity. The handling is…. almost German. (It is, in fact capable
of matching 911 lap times, at half the price) And the sound… oh the sound….

I wonder if selling a kidney on the black market would cover one? ($62,000
sticker)

PESO: You, kid, get off my lawn!

2016-05-10 Thread Nicole Jacque
Ok, I’m about half-way through with the photos from my trip. These are from
the elephant seal rookery along the coast on Hwy 1. In addition to the seals,
it was also populated by some very curious and friendly squirrels and crows.

I don’t know how old either of these seals are, but the bigger one barked at
the smaller one: https://flic.kr/p/G7WQ1Q
who proceeded to rather quickly (well, quickly for a seal on land) galumph off:
 https://flic.kr/p/G7WQTG

PESO: Heron

2016-05-09 Thread Nicole Jacque
Well, this is turning into a PESO/GESO a day-so, but I’ve now gone through my
pictures from the other side of Morro rock. My favorite picture from the south
side was a tiny bird, but on the north side, it’s a big one:

Coming in for a landing: https://flic.kr/p/G6vFd4

In flight: https://flic.kr/p/G6vFug

The album, is here: https://flic.kr/s/aHskzPCG9j

PESO: Beach Critter

2016-04-24 Thread Nicole Jacque
Last week, a friend of mine visited from Wisconsin, and Larry and I gave her a
tour of some places in the area, including a few beaches. I saw a little
critter (perhaps an anemone of some sort) in the hollow of a rock on the beach
and luckily had my macro lens on to take some pictures. It was tiny, but looks
quite interesting close up:
