In my defense, sunshiny weather at Grandfather Mountain is an unfamiliar

Aramoana is a small beach town about 20km north of Dunedin, at the end of a

such I've always been a bit apprehensive about visiting.

The town is part of a popular training route for cyclists so I decided it was
time to pay it a visit.  I don't carry a proper camera when riding so here
are a couple of cellphone snaps.  It was hard to imagine such a sleepy
community being the scene of such a tragic event.

 http://www.multi.net.nz/aramoana/

If you want to know more about the town, Wikipedia should do the trick.

For the record I had a crazy head wind on the way out.  I returned via the
hill road from Port Chalmers - it was further than I'd expected to go (about
67km in total) but well worth the effort.

Lovely shots, no matter the equipment.

Sounds like a great ride. Headwind out, tailwind home; that's the

Larry, I am sorry but without disrespect or intent of offense, I should say
that the title is way over the top... It is a fine photograph of two
mushrooms with some yellow OOF object that begs to be dealt with. You
chose focus point well and composition is spot on. But the title is, well, I
can see where it is coming from, but yet I don't subscribe to the idea.

The title doesn't bother me. Isn't there some species of mushroom
that has a name close to Madonna? I just Googled madonna mushroom
and nothing came up, so maybe I'm off-base there. In any event,
Google Madonna; the first seven items have to do with the
entertainer, and only two items on the first page don't pertain to
her, those being a university and a hospital. The second Google page
is all about the entertainer.

So, I'm not sure who's being offended by cavalier use of the word Madonna?

I think the title's fine, as it looks like the larger mushroom is
protecting the other, much like the Blessed Mother protects her
flock...

(oops, better not go there)

Seriously, a very nice photo. Well seen, well taken.

I might try to play a bit more with this sort of effect...
I thought this photo is rather interesting (albeit not perfect):
 http://komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Mixed-2011/_IR30886.jpg

I used 0.5 s exposure time (ISO-400) and the Metz flash on A setting.
I tried the same sort of effect previously, but with less success...
It seems to me that A setting of the flash (as opposed to P-TTL)
might work better for this effect, but I don't have a good logical
 explanation why.

I'd like to play with shorter exposure times (compensated by higher ISO),
so that the ambient light would still be sufficient, while somewhat
reducing the motion (and *shake*) blur.

Any suggestions and ideas are welcome.

And here is one more funny shot:

PESO - Fog Rolls In

2011-06-01 Thread frank theriault
I posted this on my colour photoblog last week, and because it's
technically lacking (noise, purple fringing, etc.) I didn't post it
on-list. However today I've changed my mind. Despite the technical
limitations, I think it's a kind of cool pic. I saw this cloud
rolling across the lake:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/fog-rolls-in.html

I thought it was moving right to left (that would be east) but about
two minutes after I took this (and a few other) photos of it, it was
over me, it was foggy and raining like hell. I put the camera away
and went (ran) home.

I just thought it as an interesting looking cloud, and still do.

Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome.

Could be, but it doesn't look quite like the photos I looked at on

It also looks a bit like an orange-crowned warbler, but they're not
supposed to be common around here, and I've seen several others like
it around lately (and I recall them from last year).

I'm thinking some sort of warbler, though, so who knows you could be right.

Thanks to all of you for looking and commenting. The reason for the
high-key rendering (for those of you who commented on that) was the
very dull sky and light - this is just the best way it looked to me in
that light. It was getting dark, hence ISO 1600. I'm pleased with
the detail at that sensitivity.

Thanks again.

Rule #1 in Nature Photography: Don't approach animals! This will
only spook them and cause them to flee. Sit back patiently and let

fire your remote and bingo: you're a nature photographer!

GESO - Grebe Gallery

I wouldn't say these guys are shy, but they usually keep a bit of a
distance. However last weekend they allowed me to get much closer
than usual. Even with that, I cropped quite a bit (I'd say what you

pleased with the sharpness I was able to get out of the Tokina 80-200
f2.8 (on a monopod).

I misnamed them. They're ~red-necked~ grebes. I see them quite
often, actually, but usually they're out on the lake, forty or fifty
yards out. When they're on the lake, you've got to be quick because
they dive for fish and spend more time under water than above. When
they're in one of the inlets (as they were here) they don't dive much
and are almost always seen in pairs, often chattering to each other.
They have floating nests near the shore - around here they're on
artificial floats put there specifically for them, but last year
several of them went unused.

Certainly not as plentiful as other waterfowl, they're visible enough
to not be uncommon.

Lovely little things...

Brilliant shot, especially with the human in the background having a
similar body position to the dog's.

I like it. The motion blur is a plus, but I'd crop out the one-legged

Damn! I changed the title on the blog to Fastball, as I figured
he's too young to be throwing curves (so the experts say). Then I
used the wrong title for the post. Oh well.

I was unsure what to do about the shortstop. That's the edge of the
frame, so there's no getting more of him in. I have other shots where
other players (including baserunners) are nicely placed in the
background, the the pitcher himself wasn't well captured at all. So
this is the best of the captures of the young fellow throwing. I was
thinking about cropping out the SS, but decided to keep him there.
Too bad I didn't get all of him, as then it would be a no-brainer -
his alert stance and facial expression are terrific.

Obviously, you're in the crop out camp. I wonder if anyone out
there will prefer him in?

Thanks for the comment, Paul.

frank

PESO - Iridescent

Can anyone ID this bird? Spotted (and stayed quite still while I
crept up on him!) down by Lake Ontario yesterday:

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Ann, I owe you an off-list e-mail, I know. When I'm on the computer I
have so little time (I'm often on at public libraries between calls at
work and am often called away quickly) that I just haven't gotten
around to getting back to you. Sorry. Will do so soon, promise.

I am fascinated by your latest color pictures, Frank. Knowing the tools
you're using :-), it is most interesting to see how light and color differ
between where you are and where I am.

It's been very grey and dark lately - unusually so for this time of
year. Had a bit of sun this past weekend, but certainly on the day I
took this one it was just after a storm and still a bit overcast.
Hopefully some vibrant colours soon!

;-)

Thanks to all who looked and commented.

As usual, brutal and honest comments are appreciated in advance.

Lovely skintones and exposure in general. I like the composition, I
like the feeling of peering into the dark shop. This is also one of
those times that the reflection in the window (a car) works well.

You caught her in a moment of concentration.

Well done!

Growing in my yard.  Super Tak 55 2.0 on E-P2

Very pretty. I like the backlight on the leave. The green oof thing
in the foreground (at least it looks to be foreground) is a bit of a
bother, but not too much so.

Overall, a lovely photo.
