Rick, thanks for your comment--from a fellow traveler. Of course the photo is of Notre Dame. I found a hotel literally just across the intersection. I was shocked and saddened when it burned. They are rebuilding it, but there is no replacement for that forest of 13th century timbers. After I left I realized that the air I was breathing probably had a lot of lead in it. My wife and I are getting old, but would like to get in one last trip apiece to our favorite countries, Italy and Sweden. And I like France, too--and England, and Germany, and Austria, and Spain, and Portugal, and the Netherlands, etc. And I forgot countries I've been to in Africa and South America. Noisy K-3??

Re: K-1 Mark II Upgrade?
Paul, the main controversy concerns the fact that Pentax added unavoidable, baked in noise reduction, apparently kicking in at ISO 640. It cannot be turned off. Some people are bothered by the resulting images being softened a little, some people are bothered by it in principal, some people don't mind it, and some people don't notice it. I avoided the Mark II upgrade largely because of this. I shoot a lot at higher ISO settings. Dpreview dinged Pentax for it, but the camera got a better review at Pentax Forums. Some people report better AF. Another reason why I avoided it is because I would have had to recalibrate all my lenses for focus accuracy. I still use them when I travel. They (and the DA lenses) are smaller and lighter than my K-1 and its lenses, and I am still very pleased with the image quality. The K-5 was produced by Hoya, the II and IIs by Ricoh. The Hoya version was notorious for cheapness. Ricoh, to their credit, fixed that. Re: Slightly different SDXC card questions
My puzzle is a little different. My K-1 saves to both card slots, for safety. Slot 1 has a Lexar 64 GB. Slot 2 has a Sandisk 64. When formatted, the Lexar shows room for a handful more shots. I've never filled the cards. When I remove the Lexar from slot 1 to transfer the images to my computer, then put the card back, the K-1 says the cards are unformatted. Huh? When I remove the Sandisk from slot 2, then put it back, there's no problem. So that is now what I do. Can anyone figure out what the problem is? Re: lens advice: FA* 400
It's a fine lens, very sharp and well made. Perhaps its best characteristic is that it is almost as sharp wide open as it is stopped down. If you want to shoot it hand-held, this matters, because you can then shoot at a higher shutter speed. You won't be disappointed. Re: DPR review of K1 II is now up, not very favourable ...
Re: "There is a thread on DPR about this. It seems that in typical fashion, DPR did a Bozo the Clown with the K1II. They didn't use the same lens as they did on the K1, and the consensus among some of the sharper tacks that post there is that the K1II images are not focused as sharply as they could be. The conclusion seems to be that very slight misfocus can appear to be heavy handed noise reduction. I wouldn't read anything into the DPR test other than that they are ham fisted morons." Okay, but there is a test over at PentaxForums that seems to show similar results: https://www.pentaxforums.com/articles/hands-on-reviews/k-1-ii-vs-k-1-noise-image-quality.html That reviewer concluded that the K1II images looked better. That's a judgement call. What I've seen tells me that I should stick with my K-1. If anyone else prefers the II, that's fine. Re: DPR review of K1 II is now up, not very favourable ...
For me, this is actually a relief. I was interested in upgrading my K-1 mainly for improved noise performance. Now that is off the table. I didn't mind the cost. My concern was that I have a lot of lenses, and it is a nuisance to test them all for focus accuracy, which I would have had to do. Instead I'll just stick with my outdated K-1, which I've been very pleased with. I doubt if I'll ever need ISO 819,200 and I will probably never use pixel shift. Is there any other reason to take up this offer? Also, if I get this new motherboard, will I have to do focus testing again on all of my (many) lenses? Unless the upgrade offers something more than the above, this would be a deal killer. Need Help With SD Card Problem
Last fall I bought a K-1 with a Sandisk 64 gb card. I have just now gotten around to calibrating my lenses for autofocus. Partway through this exercise my system (Windows 7) would not recognize the card. It had recognized the card fine up to that point. I tried going through a Lexar card reader on a USB port, but Windows kept saying that the card had an unrecognized file system and offered to format it for me. I reformatted the card in the camera, but with the same result. I then got out an old 2 gb card, formatted it for the K-1, and Windows 7 read it just fine. So the camera and computer are working okay. At this point I thought the 64 gb card was faulty. But it is only about six months old and has only about 150 images written to it. (I've been too busy for photography). Then the next day I put that non-working 64 gb Sandisk in the computer, and Windows read it fine. So, one day it works, a few hours later it doesn't work, and the next day it works again. Can anyone pinpoint what the problem might be? Specifically, can I trust this Sandisk card? Re: K-1 Autofocus
"Question: How is the K-1 autofocus, as compared to say, a K-5?" Thanks to Hoya, the K-5 had quite poor autofocus, especially in low light. On the other hand, the K-5II and IIs (I have both) have excellent AF. I have used my K-1 only a little so far, but my impression is that it hunts more than my K-5II and IIs cameras, and has more trouble finding focus in low light. That is not to say that the K-1 AF is bad, just that it seems a step backward from the excellent AF of the K-5II series cameras. I never used a K-3. If you are using a K-5, you will be pleased with the K-1 AF. On all my cameras, I use only central point autofocus. I am having two problems: Firstly, I am hopelessly 20th century, and am suffering from featuritis in Pentax's recent DSLRs. Secondly, my mind just does not work the same way as the writers/editors who prepare the indices in Pentax's manuals. I simply don't know what terms to use when searching an index. K-1 Questions
Every new Pentax camera has more features, larger menus, and more sub-menu options, but the manual never gets any clearer. The biggest problem is the index, which has an inscrutable approach to naming things that I have questions about. I find Pentax's indices virtually useless for finding answers to my questions. So, can someone please help me with a couple of questions? 1. How do I turn off Auto ISO? 2. How do I turn off the focus beep? (Most of my approach to new cameras is to turn defaults off.) Re: K-1 Price
"The price of the K-1 has not dropped from the initial introduction, it has increased instead. Its almost $200 from the initial $1800 or so that it was several months ago" The word is that this was due to the appreciation of the dollar relative to the yen. I had a little money come in, so I've just ordered a K-1, despite the price increase. For now I'll pair it mainly with the film era FA 24-90 (plus many primes that I have).
