Re: ACR Enhanced Noise Reduction Photos

2023-04-26 Thread John Sessoms

While packing up I ran across a Nikon "Film Camera" book.

There's a thread on the RangeFinder Forum in which the topic of Nikon F and F2

FTn, which I owned and lived with constantly from 1969 to about 1976 or so.
Which drew me to thinking about the early Nikon F plain prism that I got from
Charles on this list, after it had been sitting sans lens in a box in his
basement for an unknown period of time, somewhere about a decade or so ago.

Well, I had it overhauled and adjusted to spec, and found a lovely old Nikkor
28mm f/2 lens for it, somewhere around 2012. And I've occasionally run a roll
of film through it ... it performs just as beautifully as my first one did all
those eons ago.

So I thought to myself: "Hmm, I've never posted a beauty shot of the resurrected
camera..." and figured I'd do one for the RFF folks. Of course, I usually do such
beauty shots nowadays with the iPhone since they're not intended to be printed to any
size, just have to look nice in a small JPEG:

Early Nikon F "Plain Prism" - Santa Clara 2023 :: https://flic.kr/p/2ovSe27
iPhone 11 Pro
Moment Camera - DNG output
ISO 250 @ f/2 @ 1/70 @ 6mm lens

Now that wee little sensor in the iPhone 11 Pro is kinda stressed at anything over ISO 50
(ISO 100 being the limit for a clean rendering IMO) so I figured, "Here's an
opportunity to see how good the new AI Enhanced DeNoise in the latest version of
Lightroom Classic might be!"

So here's an "after/before" comparison detail clip of the image, screen
captured out of LR Classic…

Have to say, I think the denoise algorithm does a pretty nice job. :)

enjoy!

Re: ACR Enhanced Noise Reduction Photos

2023-04-25 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Well, I set all of my cameras other than the iPhone to raw-only format output
so I'm hardly one to complain about the size of a raw file.

I use the Moment camera app on the iPhone specifically to allow use of raw
format files with the 1x and 2x cameras (the 0.5x camera does not support
generating raw format output), nominally for the increased rendering potential.
That said, the standard Apple Camera app produces very very good output in HEIC
format and has all the benefits of JPEG image compression but with more dynamic
range. The raw file does have a small edge, and with this new denoise algorithm
that edge grows a bit.

The size difference between the HEIC and the Moment camera's DNG output of the
same image is 450Kbytes vs 15 Mbytes … obviously a huge difference. I don't
have one of the later iPhones that can output raw from the Apple Camera app to
compare against.

fun fun fun… G

Very impressive. I guess the DNG files are much bigger than a jpg, but with
noise recovery like this on offer it would be tempting to keep the output
set to DNG. I read somewhere that jpgs may be supported by lightroom's
denoise function in the future.

I just did a quick search through my library for high-ISO photos to try it
out. I was particularly impressed by this example, where the new algorithm
preserved the colors in a sparkly birthday party tablecloth, which were
completely obliterated by the old algorithm. (I didn't spend any time
fine-tuning the settings for either.)

Re: ACR Enhanced Noise Reduction Photos

2023-04-22 Thread Larry Colen
I used the latest LRC to process a bunch of photos I did of a friend’s CD
release/birthday party.

I basically did the processing the day before I moved, so I just narrowed the
sets down to “proof” level. One of my final steps was to do a mass application
of noise reduction. Some photos (wide angle) were taken with the K-1, the
tighter shots were taken with the K-3 III.

They were mostly bracketed in Tav, basically getting me two frames with an
under exposed frame as insurance against blown out highlights.

These basically show what half assed application of the new LR noise reduction
does.

These were mostly K-3 III
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720307556130

These were mostly K-1
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720307553706

It seems to do a pretty good job.

These don’t show cutting edge, max performance, just how it works going through
a bunch of stuff quickly.

At some point I hope to go back and clean up the best ones, but I’m currently
400 miles from home and m good computer.

Looks good. Not at all waxy to my eye. (Which is admittedly worn out.)

I have a lot of pics I shot at 51200 when I was photographic tavern pool

dig some out. Sounds like fun.

ACR Enhanced Noise Reduction Photos

2023-04-22 Thread Bill
I found a K5 file shot at ISO 51200. I doubt very much if I had in camera
noise reduction turned on.
The first image is the raw file at whatever defaults Lightroom opened it
with.
The second is with Denoise used, no other changes.
I left a small amount of noise in to give the skin some texture. If you
don't it starts to look waxy very quickly.
I did have to save the original at a lower quality setting to keep the file
size reasonable.
