Re: Back up your CD-R's and DVD-R's

2020-03-28 Thread P. J. Alling

Dave, you might want to try a paid program called IsoBuster.

I used to have a license for it many years ago, and it was astounding
the files it would recover from badly damaged media.

I haven't used it in a while but compared to all the other recovery
programs I've tried, you might as well get one of the free ones they all
do the same thing.

IsoBuster bypasses the OS routines for reading files off a drive and
goes straight to the hardware to attempt to read whatever data might be
on a CD or DVD.

Unfortunately for all it's capabilities, it only runs under Windows, and
IIRC you're running some flavor of MacOS, so you'll probably have to use
an emulator, it's supposed to work with those, but I have no experience
there.

Dave if you have a different player, try that for the ones that couldn't
be read. I've had some that refused to be read on 2 of my players and when
tried in a 3rd - someone else's computer - they read fine!

Good idea

My impression is that it's just as much the aging players as older CDs.
Two of three computers here don't even read ordinary audio CDs anymore.

When I bought my first Drobo in around 2007 I transferred as many of my
CDs as I could over to it. My oldest CD would have been less than 10
years old as I don't think I had a CD writer before 1998.
I had a very spotty success rate even then, with CDs that were supposed
to be "archival" failing to read.

Back up your CD-R's and DVD-R's

2020-03-25 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi all!

Reading this prompted me to stick my (not-sneezing-yet) head in here...
https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/16/18678447/9-11-ground-zero-world-trade-center-pictures-recovered

I realized that the time flies so fast, and my earliest digital photos are
more than 15 years old. Back in November, I went into my digital archives,
and was able to dig out some photos from 2003. But I know that somewhere in
the boxes I have DVDs with photo backups from 2003-2007. The same photos
must be on external HDDs (I hope), some of which I have not turned on for
ages...
