Well, I was only repeating what B+W had to say. And the front surface of B+W filters are coated, just not multi-coated. B+W specific - ~multi-coating~ is not needed. -- Shel Belinkoff mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Why should I use a meter? What if the darn thing broke on me when I was out making a photograph? I have Hoya HMC Skylight filter on my 3.5-4.5/24-90 and it seems to work very well indeed: no flare, no visible effect on sharpness. All the best! Alan Chan wrote: Funny you mention B+W. I remember I read somewhere mentioned B+W CIR-PL was coated, but I looked and looked, my B+W CIR-PL does not look like coated at all. Excerpt from http://www.schneideroptics.com/filters/mc.htm B+W polarizers are available with optional multi-coating: the nature of polarization renders the single anti-reflection coating unnecessary. I found very interesting second part of this statement. Strangely, top of the line of B+W filters recommended by Schneider for professional use (Kaesemann version) is without any coating at all. Okay, HOYA's HMC coating is poor alright, but their glasses are fine. regards, Alan Chan I doubt they were Pentax and made by Hoya. That just doesn't make sense. I have several SMC filters and their flare resistance is outstanding. (btw they look very different from Hoya filters) speaking of filters - what does SMC Pentax Cloudy filter with colors? Alexander Krohe wrote: Yes, I agree. I have several SMC filters and their flare resistance is outstanding. (btw they look very different from Hoya filters) Some people have surmised that Hoya makes the Pentax filters. I do not believe that this is true. However, Hoya may well make the glass for Pentax filters. They make glass for many companies. However, this glass may be made to Pentax specs (optical companies often provide specs for the glass they use), or Pentax may be buying it off the shelf. However, the coatings are definitely not typical of Hoya, and the construction is different as well. -- Shel Belinkoff mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Why should I use a meter? No polaroid filter is coated. The polarize light by be eched with a myriad of very fine lines, coating would fill in those lines and defeat the purpose of the filter. --Tom Dan Scott wrote: Shel wrote: I tried - and was quite impressed by - the Pentax SMC filters. Hi Shel, I've been meaning to ask you for a long(er) term review since you've had a chance to use them for awhile. I know you've said the HMC filters are a pain to clean, how durable and easy to clean have the Pentax filters been under regular use? Also, I've looked around on BH's website and a few others, but I haven't found out whether Pentax has SMC available on any of their polarized filters--have you come across any? Thanks to everyone who replied. I decided not to buy Pentax filters made by Hoya - think it`s better to get B+W or original ones.
