Well done, Dave

You have a good eye allowing you to make something of nothing. I need to
try harder!

Now, your knee. You sound like an ailing Road Runner. Could be simply an
overpronation problem which requires stiffer, less flexible shoes.
Otherwise, perhaps a knee replacement. Hope you can sort it out.

Re: GESO: Unusual wildlife images.

2024-09-16 Thread Alan C

Thanks, John & Larry.

I don't bother much with the usual run-off-the mill game shots any more
- they tend to get rather overdone!  John, South Africa is a cheap
destination with the current exchange rate. The Kruger Park with
self-drive is very affordable compared with the posh private game
reserves & lodges. Much cheaper than East Africa & Botswana. In fact,
all organised tours are very expensive.  We get a lot of tourists
particularly from the Netherlands coming through Phalaborwa every year
in hired Campervans, sometimes in mini-convoys.

Much cooler today after 3 days of almost 40°C - unheard off in Sept.
Hopefully we won't hit 50 in Summer.

GESO A bit of excitement on my way to work this morning

2024-07-23 Thread Larry Colen
It turns out that this morning was the first time in quite a while that I
actually carried a decent camera in the car. These were all shot with the
recently repaired K-3 III, and the used tamron 18-250 that I bought to replace
the busted pentax 18-270, that I bought to replace the poorly repaired tamron
18-250.

I apologize for the half assed editing, it's getting late. At some point I may
add some more photos, and even go back and clean up some of these.

I did look up the reg numbers on the various planes and put the details in the
file tags.

There are several photos where I didn't even notice the people in them until I
was processing.

I think that my first series of Big Bear mountain expresses the much more
significant issue. With the way that everything is being built up a little bit
of paint along side railroad tracks in the middle of town pales in contrast.
It just makes for prettier pictures than telephone poles and warehouses.

Thanks Alan. There aren't a lot of places for both dinner and dancing, they're
done consecutively these days.

I'm very happy with the lens. I got it more for photographing musicians, where
I always want a bit more reach and a bit more speed. For these I could have
used my 77, especially since I had the 85 stopped down to 2.2, but it was fun
to play with it.

Most of my shooting lately has been with the K-3II. It's a lot easier to carry
on bike rides, and it works well with the 18-270. It was interesting to
compare things like focus speed, buffer speed, and focusing with the joystick
vs the toggles.

Excellent gallery, Stan. you managed to "de-zooify" the images very well.
The Black Crowned Crane is a handsome chappie as is the pink spoonbill.

Our recent trip to Cartagena included a half-day guided visit to the Colombian
National Aviary. I have never been a big fan of taking pictures in zoos (or

situations like this, where the birds are comfortable and well treated, it does
provide a chance to get views of these lovely creatures that might take a

GESO - Mercer Museum

2023-09-09 Thread Rick Womer
Yesterday we took a trip to Doylestown, a well-preserved town incorporated in
1838, about an hour west of Philly.

Among its assets is the Mercer Museum, established by Henry Mercer in 1916, and
filled with his (very idiosyncratic) collection of tools, baskets, decorative
tiles, stoves, carriages, dolls, pottery, and a fire engine, The exhibits are
very haphazard and not very well labelled or annotated, but it is a very
interesting place nonetheless.

So, herewith a haphazard collection of photos:

BTW, regarding the original set of photographs (nice stuff) that
started this thread: I will never be able to look at an F4 Phantom
without thinking of Dan Matyola.

(Also, I think the F100 Super Saber has to be the ugliest jet fighter
ever.)

Not visible in your pic. The elevator surfaces extend beyond the jet pipe on

the air intakes, not discernable here. Otherwise, they are almost identical

614 is a Mig 27

The rest seem likely to be trainers, including the twin engined one.

GESO March recon vol. 1

2023-08-03 Thread Larry Colen

Last weekend my friend Candice and visited the museum at March Air Base. Since
it's only a few miles away, I treated it as a recon run and tried to get a
couple photos of each plane, just to catalog them for my reference. It turns
out that there are a lot of airplanes there.

This album is fighters, attack planes, trainers, observation & recon and
related.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720310220971

We did luck out and the skies cooperated, so some of the photos actually turned
out pretty nice.

I had my 18-270 on the K-3iii and my Irix 11/4 on my K-1. In retrospect I
would have been better off with the 15-30 on the K-1, though it was rather fun
shooting with the superwide and just needing to remember to adjust the
hyperfocal distance.

In honor of Dan, I started off with the F4s.

I was able to ID most of the planes in this album. Some unidentified ones are:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/53090950523/in/album-72177720310220971/

I hope that you enjoy them.
