Glad to hear you made it to that area as it's one of my favourite places.
There's just enough to do to stop you from getting bored, but not so much that
you feel you have to be doing stuff all the time.

We once had a tour through Benmore power station which was very interesting.

That's a nice story, Walt. One thing I'm always sure to do when I go there is
wait until it's dark then go outside for a look at the stars.

The little town of Tekapo probably hasn't changed a lot since you were here,
but there's a lot of new housing development going on at the moment. I heard
talk a few years ago that someone wanted to make it "the next Wanaka". I have
mixed feelings about that.

Cheers,
Dave

Re: GESO: Panoramas from Tekapo

2012-11-22 Thread Walter Hamler
Thanks for posting, David. As many here may remember, I like to talk
about my times in NZ back in the mid 70's :-) My first trip to Mt.
John was a wonderful experience that I will never forget.
We were able to stay the night and view through their fairly new 40"
scope that was only slightly hampered by a nearly full moon. After
several hours I went out to get a smoke. As I walked down the hill a
short distance, Lake Tekapo below became almost fully visible, but my
mind was still on the heavens above. The southern milky way was fully
overhead and as my gaze swept toward the horizon I became disoriented,
as the milky way kept going !! I then realized that I was seeing the
sky perfectly mirrored in an utterly glass clear lake. I was
mesmerized by the stunning view, and the memories are still vivid.
Your pictures truly bring justice to a spectacular place. Thanks again!

Walt

Hmm, I never thought about the shadows. That's why I miss my RB67 that I
modified to take panoramic photos on 35mm film. I've never enjoyed stitching.

#3 was my favourite as well. I might send it to Brady at Deep Sky Videos as
I'm sure he'd be interested, but I want to work through the rest of the photos
from up there first. I wish I'd had the time and budget to do a telescope
tour... maybe next time.

Thanks to everybody who looked and/or commented.

Cheers,
Dave

I like the 2nd and 3rd ones especially.
Superwide panoramas are funny, because you can see the shadows falling
in one direction on the left and the opposite direction, on the right.
