Some especially nice bird shots, Stan. The older coupe partially covered by
snow is a stand out. I wonder if it's a crop and if you have enough room to
move it from near dead center. Also, if it were shot from further to the right
it would balance off with the tall center tree in the background.

Re: GESO - Birding in the Soo

2011-02-24 Thread Stan Halpin
Thanks Jack. I am afraid the keeper ratio on the bird shots was pretty low but
I am pleased with those I did get.
The coupe-in-snow is cropped, but not too heavily. There is a shrub just to the
right, with one branch intruding into the uncropped image. (And so I couldn't
have moved to the right to take the picture as I would have been looking
through more branches.) I took four shots, minor variations in how much
foreground was included, how much surround was included. The one that allowed
me the best crop (wherein there was some room on the right in front of the car)
also had a pickup truck on the road in the rear.

Re: GESO - Birding in the Soo

2011-02-23 Thread Stan Halpin
Thanks Paul.
Good question about 7124. The birders were trying to spot hoary red polls which
had been reported at this feeder. No red polls to be seen here, common or
hoary, and the caravan moved on. Since I wasn't occupied in looking for birds
that weren't there, I took a few shots of the birds that were there. This is
one. In other shots of the same bird, when he was facing away, there is more
clearly yellow in the wings. In my National Geographic Field Guide to Birds -
Michigan, it kinda looks like it might be a yellow-rumped warbler but it is the
wrong time of year for it to be that far north and I suspect it is something
else.
