Checked in on all of them - still amazed at the process - fascinated by the crystal structure - like the more subtle backgrounds the best. very pretty! ann On 2/2/2013 18:47, Mark C wrote: It snowed a bit this morning and I had chance to test out the K-01 for snow crystals. Focus peaking is a HUGE advantage for this kind of work because it allows you to see what is in focus and fine tune the focus to maximize DOF. It made the morning very productive - in about 2 hours of shooting I got at least 10 good images. Image quality from the K-01 seems to be right there with the K-5. I put 4 shots from this morning on my blog, will be posted a couple more batches this week as well: http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/ Permalink: http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/2013-snow-crystals-round-2 All images were shot with the K-01, a Sigma 50mm f2.8 EX macro, and extension. The snow was very variable in size today, so I used all the extension that I have (about 230mm) for a few shots, and only about 50mm for a few other. Plus everything in between. I should comment that the second crystal in that post was very small and was shot with 230mm of extension - tubes and bellows. That is where the focusing peaking really shined. WIth all that extension a finder is so dark you can barely see, and with live view and no focus peaking it is very difficult to see what is in focus. The K-01 made it simple and easy to focus on that little bugger. Re: GESO and praise for the K-01
So, Mark, nature is coming up with new challenges (the snow crystal to shoot at 230 mm of extension). You, on the other hand, appear to overcome these challenges on the stride! Wonderful! Re: GESO and praise for the K-01
Thanks! The K-01 is indeed a bargain right now. I was not expecting to use it for anything other than snow crystals, but I realize that it will also be great for things like spring wildflowers for the same reasons why it works so well for snow. It probably would be excellent for any macro situation, except where you could not see the rear screen due to direct sunlight... Mark On 2/2/2013 10:59 PM, P. J. Re: GESO and praise for the K-01
HI Stan - The sensor can "see" the image far better than my eye can through the finder - even with all the extension the image is fairly bright on the screen. I assume the camera ramps up the ISO for composing. My eyes just can't adjust fast enough. Live View on the K5 almost gets you there, but without the focus peaking and with the very shallow DOF it is still hard to focus well. before this I would bracket focus - take a shot at my best guess of what was in focus and then tweak the focus a bit either way in hopes that if my eye was off I could still get something. Re: GESO and praise for the K-01
The image on the screen is light amplified, or so I believe. I know some of the micro 4:3 cameras do that but this is the first time I've heard that the k-01 does it.
