Re: How to present Panoramic photos?

2020-08-31 Thread John

Any good pro-lab should be able to do the print.

At 30cm wide, how long would it be? I'm guessing about 240cm (2.4m)

I wouldn't try to frame it, just have it mounted on Gator-Board.

https://www.gator-board.com/

The real problem is finding a wall suitable for displaying it after you've
printed it.

My feeling is that there really is no good way to display panoramas
online. One might argue that there is no good way to display any photo
online, because you have no control over how it is viewed. If someone is
looking at your photo on a phone the technical quality doesn't really
matter very much, and the artistic quality doesn't matter much more.

Good panoramas do seem to benefit from being printed on metal, at least 8"
(20cm) tall and however wide, preferably 12' (30cm).

You can upload something like this to Flickr:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/9690539472/

There may be an upper limit to the size of a panorama you can upload, but as far
as I can remember, the only reason I didn't upload the full size image (3,600 x
10,800) is because to make it so anyone on PDML could see it has to be "public"
and I think that makes it so anyone can also download it [1], and I didn't want
to be giving away the full size image.

The full size image makes an awesome print.

I used to be able to print it full size (12"x36") as a C-print at Costco for $5,
but the guy who knew how to do that isn't there any more.

[1]Maybe if you get a Pro account you can control that?

Re: How to present Panoramic photos?

Igor

I've had considerable success creating Panos in Elements (probably the
same in the full Photoshop) - cylindrical mode. If displayed at full
height on the screen, one can scroll L & R at will. I posted this one
last year:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/wisselstroom/49310801512/

I don't have Flickr Pro (therefore no control over display size) so you
would need to download & increase the height to preserve the right
angles of the road intersections. It is an 8 frame, 360° Pano of the
intersection by my house.

Hope this helps.

Re: How to present Panoramic photos?

2020-08-28 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Thank you, Larry and Toine for your responses.

I am not looking for 360-degrees panos, just the "classical" ones, - some
120-240 degrees.

I was asking myself, how would I imagine the "ideal" online interface.

I remember that a few years ago, I've found a software kit called "GMap
image cutter", https://www.ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/casa/gmap-image-cutter ,
based on the Google Maps API, which generates a bunch
of tiles at different "zoom"/detail levels, so that you can zoom and pan
like you do with Google Maps.
I've done 1 photo that way. (Sorry it was a school photo, so for
privacy reasons I cannot post it here.)
Right now, it produces an error, similar to that with the examples from
authors of that package:
http://www.casa.ucl.ac.uk/googlemaps/house.html
I suspect that Google has changed the API and it is not
backward compatible.
(I've found some other script(s) that also use Google Maps API, - with the
same problem.)

I hope there is some functionally similar solution that doesn't depend on
the Google (or any other) API that might change without a warning.

The longest bay can do is 96”, about 2.4m. 25cm x 2.4m would be about $250.

That should give you an idea of what it would cost to have it done in metal.

The good news is that I bet Bay Photo could do it.

The bad news is that they are here and you aren’t.

I’d be willing to bet that almost any high end shop that does metal prints

The good news about metal prints is they don’t really need to be framed.

My feeling is that there really is no good way to display panoramas online. One
might argue that there is no good way to display any photo online, because you
have no control over how it is viewed. If someone is looking at your photo on
a phone the technical quality doesn't really matter very much, and the artistic
quality doesn't matter much more.

Good panoramas do seem to benefit from being printed on metal, at least 8"
(20cm) tall and however wide, preferably 12' (30cm).

Re: How to present Panoramic photos?

2020-08-28 Thread Toine
For 360 degrees panos Pano2VR is the best option. Or use a webplayer /
plugin. X3 Pro from www.photo.gallery is one of many.
I had everything up and running in flash players which isn't working today.

How to present Panoramic photos?

2020-08-27 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi All!

Some PDMLers have been shooting and producing panoramic shots, including
some great ones.
I like panoramas, and I occasionally make them, but not very often. And
one of the reasons is I don't know how to post them for effective and
efficient viewing.

I was wondering if anybody has found any good way to display those
online, or even did any research on what is available out there.

Igor
