I suppose Pentax are just following the pack, as N***N have released aperture ring-less lenses of late - squarely aimed at enthusiasts. Not so. Part of the reason for release of G lenses was in response to requests from certain pro photogs, apparently. True some G lenses are enthusiast targeted but can we say the same about the VR 2.8 zoom? I feel that it is certain that aperture ring lenses in AF are on their way out, certainly in Nikon. Kind regards Peter

They want the non-serious photographers to buy into digital SLR's. This is the ony way for prices to come down to a level so that serious ones will buy them. And nothing prevent the serious shooters to pair the *ist with a non FA J lens. I sincerely hope Pentax succeeds, but their reasoning elused me. The reasoning is to sell a lot of cameras and lenss. Read what I said: apart from entry level etc Here's a quote: In a recent meeting with Mr. Tetsuro Goto, Head of Research and Development for Nikon SLR cameras, I asked if all future professional specification Nikkors would follow suit and be of the G-type. He explained that the decision to adopt the G specification for the VR 70-200mm lens was based purely on engineering reasons, because Nikon's priority was to produce a lightweight, compact lens, and that there was no policy to dispense with a conventional aperture ring in future lenses provided it fitted the design criteria. The LX has many accessories, interchangeable finders, screens and is such a darn good camera to use it seems rude not to explore it's capabilities g. Maybe not. But we've got a lot of mech-weenies here. If you're out shooting a party where you want and need AF, then it probably wouldn't matter. These lenses are obviously not for technical work. They're for just shooting -- production work. Looking at the pics of them on the Pentax site, something stands out to me that raises a questions: There's a manual focus ring on the front of the J75-300, but I don't see one on the J28-80. Is this correct? Collin

3. FAJ 18-35mm along with the DSLR. Don´t know the aperature range. Wasn´t this lens rumored a year ago or so (well not the FAJ version)? -Matti Eteläperä Is Pentax off in la-la land again? How many serious photographers, like those on this list, would buy an FAJ lens without distance markings, to use on a digital or any camera? It's a serious question. Please share your thoughts. I would never buy a lens without a distance scale, even understanding that the distances on zoom lenses are only approximate. On occasion I try to figure hyperfocal distance with zooms, generally with pretty good success. Let's hope we never see an FAJ 50. If that's Pentax's future, then it will be time to jump ship. Joe
Re: More Pentax news/rumors (Now taking a poll)
Joseph, The trick to jumping ship is that seems to be the future of the other brands, too. Perhaps you are meaning If Pentax starts moving downstream in target audience then it is time to jump ship? I believe there are a few on the list who would strongly argue that this has already occurred many years ago. All I can say, is I have never been happier once I moved off 35mm as being my *serious* platform. Using MF has been so much better than 35 in both results and enjoyment of the equipment and process. Now I find that Pentax directions fit just fine with my 35mm needs - mainly, decent automation and portable (small). After all, that is one of the greatest strengths of the 35mm format. I intend on being one of the early *ist-ites and will give a full report of my impressions and experiences. Now I just need to find out when/where I can get one. Joseph wrote: Is Pentax off in la-la land again? How many serious photographers, like those on this list, would buy an FAJ lens without distance markings, to use on a digital or any camera? About 95,6% of the camera buying public in this segment. Mind you, I have no idea if theres truth in the rumors about the 18-35 FAJ lens. However, the *Ist is netry level and the FAJ's are entry level too. It then follows that provided the FAJ 18-35 exist at all, it is a cheap entry level wide angle zoom targeted at *IST buyers; people who are after making a good deal. The FAJ 18-35 lens, again provided it exist, is therefore an obvious candidate for a cheap lens to bundle in a kit with the *Ist digital (or the regular *Ist). Pål

Mike, Sorry...All I can say, is if you heft a 67II, you will get hooked if you like nice, big, clear viewfinders and that wonderful mechanical feel of old. The 67II gives you just enough automation (about on par with the LX) to be used in faster moving situations and has the nicest grip for your hands. And yes, I suspect that the 75/2.8 is probably the most ideal lens to have. One I am still planning on getting. As to how nice images turn out, the 55/4, 90/2.8, 165/2.8 or 4 LS are superb. Who knows, maybe someday I'll succomb to the LX hood - about the time you get into the 67 hood VBG.
