Body styling is obviously an important part of how a camera works
since you have to hold it to use it. I'm not a fan of retro per se as
much as I'm not a fan of modern styling for the sake of being
different. Body styling also affects compactness as a dove bar will
slide in your pocket whereas something with a big grip is easy to
hold. I also like manual controls. One person's styling is often
another person's function. However, I will put up with a lot if the
IQ is really good.

For me the styling is unimportant. Retro that works is controls and
ergonomics. Since it's a m43 camera I doubt it will allow the use of
legacy lenses better than any other m43 system camera so I'm not
particularly excited. I don't own any OM-Zuiko glass anyway, but many
were outstanding lenses.

I have friends who have OM systems, and they are a bit disappointed that
Olympus didn't make as much effort as Pentax did to keep their old
lenses compatible. Most have moved on to low to mid level Canons...

Using my existing lens kit is much more important than what the camera
looks like. Right now I have a system that can use every single bit of
legacy gl\ass I own.

If you want retro for retro sake, look at the Epson RD-1, now that's
retro, even more so than the Leica M-9.

Agreed. I like my old cameras because the controls worked so well.
The presence of automatic modes makes these controls an afterthought,
and this becomes clear when you use the camera. Most shots work fine
on auto but that actually makes it worse. You don't' use the manual
controls as often, and when needed it's hard to react quickly.

One of the reasons I fell in love all over again with the M4-2, which
led to my buying the M9, is that I find I get better results, more
consistently, with all manual controls on cameras that are designed
with manual control as a priority. Using manual controls on cameras
primarily designed to be used with automation invariably presents some
awkwardness in use, which makes using manual control less effective
and obtaining top notch results less consistent.

The Epson RD-1's not retro, it's steampunk.

The M9 is not retro either, any more than the M7 was retro, it's simply the
continuation of a successful design. If it was retro it would be more like
the recent MP, which was styled to look like the M3.

Is Olympus going to survive as a camera maker?
They sure don't inspire much confidence as a public company.

I'm not into 4/3, but something tells me that his could be a home run
 in attention-getting for Olympus.
Will probably be headline competition for whatever it is that Pentax
 announces around the same timeframe.

The only way I'd particularly care would be if it accepted OM lenses
natively. Otherwise it's just another m43 camera. Nice but nothing
special, except possibly for the pretty face.

Don't lose heart! They might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a

Re: No discussion of the Olympus OM-D ?

2012-01-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I don't think there's any particular propensity for this group of
people to enjoy retro. I dislike retro, personally. Retro
implies styling things to make appear a particular way for the sake of
selling them on the fantasy of those looks. I dislike things that are
false this way.

I love cameras that work. Many older cameras are dear to me simply
because they work very well. Build me a camera that works well and
I'm all for it.

Olympus has produced many excellent cameras. I hope this one proves to
be an excellent camera too.

I don't know why speculation about an Olympus camera would be of more
than just passing interest for the Pentax community, however.

ALL interest is passing interest, for we mere mortals, Godfrey.

Re: No discussion of the Olympus OM-D ?

2012-01-23 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
An exciting new camera is of more than passing interest to this group because
(and this is just my unscientific opinion) many here are photographers first,
Pentaxians second. That is evidenced by the fact that so many own other brands
along with their Pentaxes; some have even discarded their Pentaxes ~in toto~
and remain on the list for reasons other than their loyalty to the brand.

You of all people, Godfrey, who look beyond Pentax to satisfy your photographic
needs, will understand that.

If there's one thing that I've always liked about this list it's the love/hate
relationship that so many seem to have with Pentax. No blindly spewing the
company line, no my camera maker right or wrong, it's more like, here's what
I want and if you don't make it I'll still love you but I will go elsewhere.

There are very few measurebaters compared to other places; we're just people
who like taking pictures, on whatever equipment is out there that suits our
needs.

That, I suppose, is why the latest Oly is of more than passing interest.

Cheers,
frank
