Thanks Godfrey and Dave M. My computer will not support the latest OS but looks like high sierra will. I found a link to apple store and for HS but i just want to down load and install later but it looks like it wants to download and install at once. Re: OT Apple key board help
You need to update macOS. The latest keyboards rely upon new infrastructure for their 'soft key' functionality, in part, that's only available in later versions of the operating system. I get calls on issues like this from my brother and one of my friends all the time. There's no fixing some of these issues without getting everything to either current or to the last, most recent version of the operating system that will install on a given machine. It's one of the reasons I always keep my computer's operating system up to date, and have virtually no issues to speak of. Re: OT Apple key board help
I just hold down the "fn" key (bottom left of my keyboard) then hit the relevant F key to change volume etc. But my keyboard may differ from yours. Re: OT Apple key board help
I have delayed responding, thinking that maybe someone who actually knows something would step forward. Hasn’t happened yet, so I will give this a try. I have a newish full size Apple keyboard (i.e., with number pad, Esc and F1 through F19 on the top row.) Also wireless, though I use mine plugged into the USB. I am on OSX10.14.2, I have no idea if the system generation would make a difference. Given all that, here is a hint. Go to System Preferences. Open the Keyboard section. You may find two checkbox options. The first is whether or not to show a Keyboard viewer in the menu bar. And (drum roll please) the second is whether to use the Function Keys as Function keys. If you have that second box checked, then (as someone already said) you would need to hold the fn key down when e.g. trying to use the F12 key to increase volume. If I am right, then uncheck that second box, relax, and get on with important stuff like looking for your spell corrector... stan > On Jan 14, 2019, at 10:06 AM, David J Brooks wrote: > > destroyed my original corded apple keyboard with decaf tea this > morning.
