Re: OT: iMac question

2008-10-03 Thread Joseph McAllister
Actually, there is a choice in video cards with the iMac if you opt
for the slightly slower cpu and are ok with the 320 gig HD, you can
order the machine online with the upgraded video card from the top of
the line model, and have the memory filled to capacity. You cannot do
this thru the Apple Stores - they have boxed standard units they
cannot open and change anything except memory upgrades. You have to
order it from Apple's online store. It is then custom configured at
the factory overseas and shipped to your home within a few days.

Reason? The iMac guts are only reachable by sucking the lucite screen
off the LCD panel with glass lifting suction cups. It's a press fit.
Then you can remove the LCD and get at the drives, video, etc. The
problem is that this should really be done in a clean room, else once
reassembled, you may find particles between the lucite and the LCD
that are distracting, especially for photo folks and artists.

Personally, I found that after ordering the base middle of the road
iMac with the super-fast high memory video card and 4 gigs of ram, I
was within a couple of hundred dollars of the top of the line model,
which has a faster cpu. Only if you order the top of the line with 4
gigs of Apple ram will you see a larger gap in the price difference.

By the way, I had my car broken into wednesday night, and three medium
camera bags stolen. I will be posting a list with serial numbers in a
little bit. I'd appreciate it if you all would keep your eyes open for
any of this stuff showing up.

The Video card affects UI responsiveness in OS X, but is only used for

There is a grand total of 1 (one) known virus for OSX. And even then,
propagation is VERY limited.
Thanks to the separation of admin functions from normal user
functions, it is difficult for a virus to propagate itself, or to
compromise your system to the point of failure.

On the windows side, windows is windows. You'll still need your
antivirus program running, and you'll need to stay on top of the
windows updates. OSX has its own update mechanism as well, and it's
much nicer than the Windows updates.

Boot Camp is free, and should be rolled into the next MacOS X release.
You'll have to download it, but I don't know if/how partitioning works
with regards to it. There's also Parallels, which works differently, and

 Hi mac a doodles.:-)

Am i to believe that the imac has all of its hardware in the screen,
no tower to worry about kicking it with feet and knee's.??

Also the dual core 2 intel. Is there anything special you need to
do/load to work between Mac and Winblows, or do you need to get boot
 camp or such.

I have my office machine (a newish MacBook Pro) set up with Parallels
since I have to use Windows software to access my email, our server,

Minimize, work on OS 10, then click back to Windows when needed. The
virtual ethernet port on the virtual machine is clever enough that it
shares the pipe with the Mac software, so that email updates are
happening in Windows Outlook even while I am using Safari on the Mac..

Hook a monitor/LCD onto that Macbook Pro and have OSX on one display
and Windows full screen on the other and now your really talking!
