It is simpler if you're buying new lenses, and at some point I'll get new
glass, but I've no plans to discard at least some of the mount glass I own.
Thing is, there's no fixed focal length 120mm lens available from Pentax
other than in K-mount.

The closest lens to provide an equivalent field of view on the DSLR  
format is the FA77, if that's what you're after. It does pretty well...

120mm is pretty close to the longest focal length I use with any  
frequency, for which the FA135/2.8 IF suffices nicely.

At this point I'd strongly recommend going for F or later lenses,
unless you think the K10D will be the last body you'll ever buy; 
I don't think it will be too long before we see cameras that will
depend on the presence of that digital signal communication path
for full operation.  When that happens it's quite possible that
an A lens will be treated no differently from any earlier K-mount.

sharpness on the newspaper that F5.6 provided was important.  5.6 is a

They have some experimental, proprietary software, a few very stoned-out
geniuses on staff, and a deep understanding of how some BW films render
color.  Beyond that I can say no more, in part because of ignorance and in
part because I've been told to keep my mouth shut.  The results are pretty
good, but not perfect.
