Peso-Wild Oats

2016-05-07 Thread Jack Davis

I, also, often find square images pleasing.
This done several years ago with a Mamaiya6.
Initially posted with a completely black barn
shape looming behind the wild oats.
Thought I'd try giving the barn more presence by
revealing some of the weathered boards.(?)

Excellent framing on this, Jack, but I think I prefer a rendering
somewhat between the two presented. Maybe the first rendering overall
but with the extra detail on the shed wall from the second.

Thanks, Brian. I see the re-do a bit contrasty in the fence area, but didn't
like the original rather bland look produced by my cheap flat bed scanner.
I could reduce the intensity slightly if I do print one for framing.

Hi Z,
Are you the same Z who rated thousands of photos on photo.net without ever
posting? No offense intended, just curious.

Do you have a name? We generally have names here -- most of us have nothing to
hide. And those of us who do have something to hide, like Cotty and Frank, have
already been exposed:-). Of course a name is optional. But somehow a real
honest to gosh name seems to make it all a bit more friendly.

In any case, welcome to the PDML.

No, certainly not too much feedback. I'm only slightly lukewarm about
this one myself.
I do, however, like the contrast afforded by the shading. My only
negative is the fact that the stump is not a natural fall, but shows
the obvious use of a chain saw. Also, the oat shafts only hint at the
symmetry and sweep I'd like to have seen.

Lighten the shadows just a tad to add a tad more detail in the shadow. Not a

I understand. I relate to the light areas of reflection that place the
surface of the barn and need nothing else. The contrast it provides to
'present' the oat grass, is important to the image.
For me, the heavy imposing shape of the barn adds power/drama.
Not trying to change your mind, simply telling you what's in mine.

You're right about there being no detail in the dark areas.
What's a BMP file? Scanned (wimp flatbed) as a jpg.
Contrast was upped slightly to add depth and encourage a denser black.
Thus the desired dark areas.

Thanks, Shel

You're right about there being no detail in the dark areas.
What's a BMP file? Scanned (wimp flatbed) as a jpg.
Contrast was upped slightly to add depth and encourage a denser
 black.
  Thus the desired dark areas.

  Thanks, Shel

BMP's are large and typically do not portray photographs well as they
are usually 256 colours/shades of grey only.

Are you saying that BMP is inconvenient or unfriendly to access and

 Just trying to learn.

Ah! Thanks Adam. I always designate jpg, but it adds the suffix
.jpg to the title. I remove it for uploading. Can be fussy.
