I am pretty sure that happens to all Goldfinches in winter. The males especially get their most colorful plumage for the breeding season, and it naturally fades later in the season. Thanks, Jack. When I took that shot, I was still getting used to the camera. I'd had it less than a month and was still trying to get a feel for exposure compensation and using it a lot. It was taken at 6:42 am on May 27 -- which would have put the sun just coming over the back of the house and hitting the lower branches of the tree at that moment. A good catch, Walter. I find I have to slightly under expose the bright yellow ones as their feathers "bloom" and lose their fine detail. The finches themselves being so small are all but impossible to meter off of. They actually have a three-lens kit with a 70-300mm, but the shop didn't have one in stock, so I settled and picked up a decent Promaster 70-300mm later. I've managed to have decent luck catching them. This is the best in-flight one I've gotten, and I've gotten a pretty decent one sitting in a tree. On this one, I used my old manual focus Asahi Takumar 135mm prime at 200 ISO for 1/2500 in aperture priority -- not sure what the f-stop was, but I'm guessing it was 2.5 considering how soft it is. http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/400117/#/photos/walt_gilbert/400117/lightbox/ I've had my best luck setting my focus on the feeder, waiting for the bird to land, leading the bird between its perched position and the feeder, adjusting the focus to a point between the bird and the feeder, and snapping as it passes through the frame, hand-held. Of course, I sit in a small recessed front porch about 15 feet from the feeder, which gives me just enough cover to avoid spooking them. I don't know if it would be practical for you to set up something like that -- maybe a small canopy of some sort -- but it does work for me. It does take practice -- catching birds in-flight has been my main focus since I got my K-x. But keep at it and I'm sure you'll start snapping them left and right. This all gives me a chance to re-show off an idea that actually worked. We've gone through about a metric ton of Niger in a feeder in the past couple years. After the frustration of many photo attempts, I decided to give the feeder a natural arm for them to use as another perch. Gold finches almost never fly directly to the feeder screen. They perch everywhere they can find around it 'til they feel things appear OK and they've selected the perfect feeding spot. The House finches (red sort of gray with red toned head and neck) don't perch, but fly directly to the feeder base. I'm told they don't "perch." I went to the country and cut a stalk of Wild Mustard. Took it home and taped it to the top of the feeder. This is the result. I sorta wish the head/tail overlap hadn't happened. Forgive me for this duplication? Thanks! The best advice I can give you is to watch them for a while. Birds are creatures of habit and will return to the same perch over and over again in the course of an hour or so. Watch as they hop from one perch to the next in the same order over and over again. Pick the perch with the best background and angle and just focus on that spot. Stare at it through the viewfinder ignoring the little guys as they tease and mock you from other perches. Then as soon as one hits the perch, fire off as many frames as you can.
