Re: PESO - Chipping Sparrow
Hi Ken, This is an interesting photo for me. It touched my heart and emotions immediately, even before it completed loading. Usually I look at a photo for a while and slowly get a sense about it. Somehow this one had an immediate effect. This is good ;-)) Surprisingly, I don't find it to be that good a photo from the POV of composition. The lower twig is annoying and could be disappeared, giving the photo a better balance and a little more strength. I do like the muted colors. They are winter colors, not overly bright and saturated as so many photos are today. The choice to keep the tones a bit more muted was a good one, giving the photo a very real feeling. I can almost feel what that cold bird is feeling (I want a bowl of nice, hot worms about now LOL) Shel You meet the nicest people with a Pentax - Kenneth Waller wrote: http://mypeoplepc.com/members/kwaller/offwallphoto/id2.html Yeah, nay, and/or otherwise What would you do differently?

I like it Ken, and the little branch in the bottom doesn't bother me at all. I like the muted colors and the snow fall. The flakes on its head really make the shot scream: I'm COLD! Just for contrast, here's my summer chipping sparrow: http://photography.skofteland.net/displayimage.php?pos=-44 Christian - Original Message - From: Kenneth Waller [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: pentax-discuss@pdml.net Sent: Saturday, December 10, 2005 1:40 PM Subject: PESO - Chipping Sparrow Check out http://mypeoplepc.com/members/kwaller/offwallphoto/id2.html All comments solicited Yeah, nay, and/or otherwise What would you do differently? I'm mostly a yeah on this one. You have allowed us to share in the feeling of being out in the cold. The soft, diffused light and the ruffled look of the bird are great. The two twigs in the chest area are minorly bothersome to me. -- Best regards, Bruce Saturday, December 10, 2005, 10:40:19 AM, you wrote: KW Check out KW http://mypeoplepc.com/members/kwaller/offwallphoto/id2.html KW All comments solicited KW Yeah, nay, and/or otherwise KW What would you do differently? I actually shot this out of the back of my house through a sliding door wall. I've managed to lose the shooting data, but IIRC the ISO was set to 200, most likely f4.0 shutter ? Thanks fotr looking commenting. Kenneth Waller - Original Message - From: Joseph Tainter [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: PESO - Chipping Sparrow Ken, I like it a lot. I want to do shots like this with my F* 600 F4 -- when I can find some time. What ISO, aperture, and shutter speed did you use? I would definitely clone out the bottom branch. And I would see how it looks cropping the left a bit. Get the bird at the lower left golden rectangle point. Joe

Shel, thanks for looking commenting. As I just posted, I don't know how I managed to overlook that darn twig. I took this image during a late April snow fall earlier this year - it was really cominmg down, I was fortunate to capture the effect. Very little done in PS other than black/white point, shadows and slight saturation. Kenneth Waller - Original Message - From: Shel Belinkoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: pentax-discuss@pdml.net Sent: Saturday, December 10, 2005 2:26 PM Subject: Re: PESO - Chipping Sparrow Hi Ken, This is an interesting photo for me.

Ken, I'd go out and cut off those two twigs that are over the bird's breast, for next time! Seriously, I like the picture a lot, especially the snow flakes. Regards, Bob S. What's interesting is that mine was shot in June and is a juvenile which makes sense (it had probably just fledged judging by the fluffy feathers on the back). Yours is a winter shot but shows a bird in breeding plumage with the bright rufous cap. Was this a recent picture or one from early last spring? Excellent. I would expect to see some fringing due to the contrast between the branch and the snow, but it's not evident. The 400/5.6 and converter can't deliver results like this. Nice work, Ken.
