Re: PESO - SNOW!

Thanks, Henk

It's just what I saw -- shot on full auto with the flash turned on -
though  I did crop just a wee bit off the bottom - and brightened it a
bit .  I'm not
inclinded to touch it further  (no pun intended this time really!)
especially since someone has already purchased a file to print for
himself - which made my day yesterday.

Re: PESO: Snow Bandit

2021-02-15 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for looking, Alan.

The birds around here are making themselves scarce, except for the finches
at my thistle feeder and the sparrows who gather beneath to grab the seeds
that fall to the snow. I did get a beautiful solitary male cardinal for a
few minutes yesterday, which is the subject of a separate PESO. A small
hawk perched in a tree along my drive, but by the time I grabbed my camera,
it was gone.

Enjoy your birds, and remember that hot and wet is not as bad as freezing
rain, which is what we expect tonight here.

Thanks. It's a snow dune created by the wind, about knee high, in
bright sunlight which creates the high contrast and sparkles.

Re: PEso: Snow

2020-12-17 Thread ann sanfedele

Thanks Paul, Henk, Dan & Alan  and anyone who comes along later :-)

Henk -  I have much better storm shots than this.. well, at least a lot
I like much more myself.  That corner store is in the last of a number
of reimaginings
in the 52 years I've lived here..  This is the worst. the hidious sign
and lights are on all night..and it's style is definitely not in keeping
with the lovely old
brownstones on our street that are landmarked.  It used to be a store
that sold fresh veggies, bread and packaged food, ice cream etc.. more
of a bodega

than a vape shop.

Alan, a gold mine?

PESO: Snow in Paradise

We had an historic Kona storm in Hawaii, with a day and a half of chilly
weather, high winds, huge surf and occasional downpours. Today, the
weather is sunny and pleasant, and everything is back to normal, except for
the loss of some of the sands on the beaches, continued heavy surf, and
SNOW on the 10,000 foot summit of Haleakalaa volcano.

That would be enough for 3 years. We had a lot of snow and the river
frozen over in the 80's (I could walk over it), but not in recent
years.

That'd be approaching 50 years worth in these parts, if my mental arithmetic is
correct.

He might have to follow the lead of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology after
they had to extend the temperature scale on their forecast chart last year.

I'm sure much of that snow was expected to fall on California. We're in a
severe drought situation

So, all the snow talk out here is about how much Michigan owes us.

This has been a 'good old' winter around here. We haven't had one like this
since the 70's.

The keeper of the 'snow meter' is worried he won't have enought room on the

Suttons Bay is located in the Leelanau Peninsula, in the northern part of

Re: PESO - Snow Day

2013-12-18 Thread knarf
On dry city streets skinny road slicks have the best adhesion.

In the snow they sink down to pavement and aren't that bad. Once the salting
and plowing is done they're fine. Before that treaded cyclocross tires are
great but snow gets cleared fast downtown and once on bare pavement they wear
down quickly.

Mountain bike tires are too much resistance.

Road tires are the best compromise in most conditions imho.

frank

I first noticed them several years ago in Alaska, where I think they were

Very brave. Even in dry conditions a road bike with those thin tyres can
easily slip when cornering. Potholes are a danger too. Here, most
recreational cyclists now ride mountain bikes which don't slide so easily
& can better handle "imperfections" in the road suface. Unfortunately, I'm

Re: PESO - Snow Day

2013-12-17 Thread Alan C
Yes, loose sand is the problem because they do eternal "temp repairs" by
filling the potholes with soil. Iv'e side-slipped a couple of times but
haven't actually come off yet. Like you, I more of less know where the
problems are but I don't ride that fast. We now have some sections where
there are more potholes than road. The smaller municipalities just can't
generate enough income to do the maintenance properly (mostly because there
is a culture of non-payment among certain section of the population & it is
never followed up for fear of losing votes).

I have also thought about converting my road bike to a TT bike with more
robust wheels and bigger treaded tyres & new handlebars. I seldom use the
drops in any case.

Interesting, the only times I've ever lost grip on the road were in icy
conditions, plus once when I locked a rear wheel under braking. Are your
roads a bit greasy or dusty?

We have lots of potholes here and more seem to appear every time it rains.
Most are small but I've developed a bit of a mental map of the ones on my
regular riding route. It's necessary to know the roads for when I ride my
TT bike where my weight is much further forward, the brakes are out of reach
and it's really not advisable to make sudden moves.

I thought about selling my mountain bike a few months back. It's a nice
model and in excellent condition but is damn near worthless on the
secondhand market, so I've kept it.

Dave

Subject: PESO Snow Leaper

Had some fun shooting the neighborhood kids today. The k-3 did a good job
of focusing through the snowflakes. I've had trouble getting earlier
Pentax cameras to lock on the main image in these conditions. This guy is
our next door neighbor, Grace's first love:-)
