For the record I had a crazy head wind on the way out. I returned via the hill road from Port Chalmers - it was further than I'd expected to go (about 67km in total) but well worth the effort. Lovely shots, no matter the equipment. Sounds like a great ride. I made up for the tail wind by returning over the hills. I was pushing myself a bit because I'd planned on the ride being about 50km and it turned out to be nearly 70. Should have carried more food. You can't do that trip any more as the Southerner was stopped in 2002. I used to take that train to visit my dad in Timaru when I was in my teens. My experience of Dunedin is all from the past 10 years or so. I guess you won't have been to Larnach Castle as that would have been in the early stages of restoration back then. Since you mention the hospital I will add that their medical school has a very good reputation. My sister-in-law is studying nutrition there at the moment. A beautiful city in a beautiful part of NZ. My friend, Frank Andrews, often called it the San Francisco of the Southern h Hemisphere. I don't think I knew you'd been down in this country. I don't know if the news coverage of that event would have extended much past NZ or maybe Australia. Dunedin is a lovely city with lots of beautiful old buildings and a very Scottish heritage. I find myself paying more attention to historic buildings lately since we lost so many up here in Christchurch. About the only downside of Dunedin is that it's reputed to be COLD in winter.
