Someone answered me, and I inadvertently tossed the message out, but essentially
they said it probably WAS foam in that channel.

With MY poor ol' eyes, I didn't even know there WAS a channel!

So, I got out my flip-down magnifier glasses, and sure enough, I was dissolving
whatever was in the foam, which kept coming off on the Q-tips!

I've let it 'dry' overnight and will clean up and reassemble tomorrow.
Actually, the foam strip seems to have survived my ministrations, in spite of
inept intentions, and if it's still a little bouncy when daylight comes, I'll
just reassemble the back on it!

Ya know, I need a set of magnifying lenses that fit on my regular glasses. I

I've never replaced mirror box seals, but seals on the back are pretty
easy to do.

I got some foam from this fellow on eekbay
http://myworld.ebay.com.au/interslice/

The little bamboo tool is good for cleaning out the old gunk, with a
little alcohol help (naturally). The new foam just packs into the
grooves, or has a self-adhesive backing for the door areas. Saved the
lives of two Fuji 645s and a Mamiya TLR

Your optometrist should have or be able to get you clip-on magnifiers
like I use. They flip up, and clip to the frame around the lenses of
your glasses. Mine are 7x, plastic, come with a case.

I bought a light seals kit from the seller Derby suggests (interslice).
It comes with clear instructions, and you can download some
camera-specific instructions from his web site.
I am not a handyman at all, but I could replace the light seals and the
foam in the mirror chamber of my two MX bodies with no problems
whatsoever. A kit is enough to change the light seals in at least 4 or 5
bodies, in my experience.

Tbinking that was deteriorated foam seal stuff, I got out the denatured
(isopropyl) alcohol and a bunch of swabs.

Well, it dissolves whatever-it-is well, but it keeps coming off, like tar!

I'm not down to the base metal of the back, but thought I'd stop and ask what
mild solvent is recommended.

This stuff acted like acetone or MEK! I checked the label three times, to be
sure!

The rest of the body is really perfect, but on the back there's some black stuff
coming off, like I was dissolving paint!

What say ye?

I'm not 100% sure, Keith, as I don't currently own an MX. But the LX
uses a glued in strip of rubber in that channel.

Might be you are trying to dissolve that! In which case I'm sorry.

Pentax learned from the Spotmatic, K1000 days. Of course, that never
stopped them from using the same foam that turned to goo in the mirror
box of all their cameras.

It's the old light seals. Clean them off, clean out the groves,
install new ones.

It was/is. Under magnification, they DO look pretty clean now! Wonder why!?

I'll deliver it to my local repair guy, about a mile away. if he's still in
business, that is!

Thanks a lot.
