I have it's fraternal twin, the Tamron version, fantastic lens, puts
all the primes that went before it to shame performance wise but you
have to be mentally prepared to deal with its bulk and weight, it's
hulking.

Re: D-FA HD 15-20mm f2.8

2018-06-09 Thread Mark C
I’m a bargain hunter myself and really worked that angle before making
the decision to go with the 15-30.

I already have an FA 20-35 f4, so I was looking for something that would
do better . The 20-35 is good at the wide end when stopped down to f8 or
11 and is very good at the long end. But at the 20mm end the
combination of CA, distortion, vignetting and poor AF accuracy can
really hurt image quality. I used it on and off for a year and decided
that it fell short of what I wanted.

Initially I considered just getting a good 14/15mm or 20mm prime and
leaving it at that. Contenders were the Rokinon 14mm f2.8 and 20mm f
1.8, Pentax FA 20mm f28 and IRIX 15mm. Without going into details, I
didn’t feel like these lenses offered enough of a boost over the FA
20-35, each alternative failing on its own terms. (Though the IRIX is a
lens I would look at if the 15-30 did not pan out).

You mention a Sigma 14mm f3.5. I own this lens, bought new many years
ago. I liked the results on slide film back in the day but on DSLR’s
it’s no good. Maybe my copy deteriorated (though it was seldom used )
but its bad on APS-C and terrible on full frame. I usually don’t speak
that harshly about a lens but I don’t even want to try to sell this one,
because whoever buys it will be unhappy.

After looking at the alternatives, I settled on he DFA 15-30. It’s not
perfect. You can’t use filters with it without buying into a very
expensive system , the bulbous front element looks like an accident
waiting to happen, and it’s really big and heavy. But it’s super sharp,
has incredible close focus, virtually no CA or light falloff, and an
excellent zoom range. I’m hanging onto the FA 20-35 for situations where
I want to use filters or want a light wide angle.

FWIW - when I got the K1 I was prepared to replace both the the FA 20-35
and also my Sigma EX APO 70-200 f2.8 (the original film version of this
lens, from the late 1990's). The Sigma proved to be a great performer -
exceptionally sharp, great flare control (really surprised me) and while
it has moderate CA wide open its very easily corrected. It's not ideal -
poor close focusing distance (3 meters) and slow cam driven AF - but for
me its fine. Upgrading it is off my list. So I agree there are a lot of
underappreciated lenses out there.

With the outstanding high ISO PERFORMANCE of the latest Pentax, I don’t see

I borrowed Larry's 15-30 for a couple of shots while we were in California in
November 2016 - I
confirm Mark's comments on exposure between areas of different brightness and
boy, that barrel
distortion! That was on a K5ii, maybe not so bad on the K1. Interesting lens,
however, and very
sharp.

I'm really glad you posted about using this lens for shooting the milky
way. As it turns out the trip I'm taking up north in a couple weeks puts
will put me literally about 2 miles away from a dark sky preserve at the

I've never tried shooting the milky way before but this will be a good

I got it intending ti use it for landscapes but the close focusing
abilities open up some other opportunities as well. The focal range is
also pretty good for use on APS C and if it behaves nicely with infrared
it might get some use on my IR converted k01, being a bit wider than the
DA 18-55 WR that is on it.

Impressions:

- Its big and heavy. Make that very big and very heavy.

- Devilishly sharp. Virtually no softening at the corners or far edges
even at wide angles.

- The wide aperture and close focusing ability is remarkable. Both
shots
wit the cats were at f4.5 and the dof is very narrow, but then the lens

was very close to the subjects.

- In the few outdoor shots I tried, it was difficult to get a good
exposure. At 15mm it was picking up the sky and the ground at my feet,
exceeding the dynamic range of the K1 (which is a pretty wide dynamic
range.) Granted, this was in full brilliant mid afternoon June
sunshine.
But even then I was exposing -2 or -3 stops from the meter reading in
order to get decent highlights and then bring up the shadows in post.
The third shot - the lake - give me hope since it was into the sun,
though the sun was just out of the frame and lightly obscured but the
cloud in the upper left. But I did do about 10 minutes of post
processing to competss the tonal range and make a few other
adjustments.

This is definitely a lens that will take a little time to understand
and
master, especially at the 15mm end. I plan to take it out tomorrow for
a
more extensive test drive.

Thank you. That lens, or one like it, was pretty much why I bought the
K-1, the angle of view, speed and sharpness of the combination. Anyone
who has that lens and camera body should definitely spend some time
outside at night with them taking advantage of the combination.

The other lens I often use for night photography with the K-1 is the
Rokinon 24/1.4, which is fortunately much less expensive than the 15-30.

Luiz's question about astrophotography reminded me that I find that one
thing I use mine for a lot is night time landscapes. I've gotten some
really nice shots of the milky way simply by pointing the camera at it
and taking 30 second exposures using Astrotracer.

Unfortunately I can't search through flickr for photos that I shot with
a particular lens, so I put together a quick album of some of my best
slow shutter speed photos using the DFA 15-30:

2018-06-08 Thread Paul Stenquist
I love that lens. I don’t use it a lot, but it is perfect on the wide endfor
car interiors. And at 30mm, it’s a nice landscape lens, capBle of capturing
plenty of detail.

2018-06-08 Thread Mark C
I took it out for a couple hours this afternoon, a little more dedicated
test than just randomly shooting though the results are more or less the
same. I'm glad I got it - though I have to rethink the camera bag
situation in light of its size.
