I am certain Paul will give you a full answer. Here is mine, kind of
second hand. Paul has made a target which I think he can share. You put
it on the floor, you shoot it with your camera angled approximately 45
deg to the floor and once you shoot you correct the AF with in-camera
correction module. By doing so you dial in or effectively produce an
individual correction for each of your lenses, provided you don't have
too many. In case of fast or cranky lenses, such as FA 50/1.4 or zoom
lenses such as Sigma 24-60/2.8 (Sigmas generally being known for AF
imprecision) it can be a difference between lost and made shot.

Now, since they are offering prices to good fathers, I also dialed in
specifically Galia's lenses for K-7. FA 50/1.4 needed minor correction,
DA 21 and FA 100/3.5 did not.

I don't think the variance of autofocus accuracy from one lens to the next is
something that can be fixed with firmware. It's a matter of lens variation
caused by assembly accuracy and perhaps even wear and tear. But I'm pleased
that Pentax provides an easy way to dial in each lens.

It's not really my system. It's pretty much the standard for adjusting
autofocus, and Boris has it right. There are alternatives that are somewhat
easier to use but more difficult to construct, such as a method where the
target is a slope that rises at 45 degrees and the camera is level. The target,
whether on the floor or angled up from the floor has a series of evenly spaced
line and a central target line. I made my target line slightly bolder than the
rest and placed a red dot at its center. After shooting in single center spot
autofocus mode, with the center line as the target, you simply observe the
results and determine if the center line is indeed the sharpest. If not, you
can see if the camera is back-focusing or front-focusing by determining which
line is sharpest. The important part is that you shoot of a tripod when
adjusting and check the focus at wide open apertures. I also check my results
on the computer screen rather than trying to decipher a tiny image on the
camera viewing screen.
Paul

 Jaume

K-5 is crap, pictures at ISO54000 are practically unusable, all the modes have
been made redundant by the dedicated ISO button and program shift, there is no
autofocus on movies, focusing in Live View can be beaten by any super-compact
and some SD cards catch on to something and are difficult to remove. Viewfinder
blackout is so short that you have to check if it has really made an exposure
after each shot and autofocus is so quiet with SDM lenses that there is no
trusting it!

Avoid it if you can!

But seriously after removing all the crap on startup and adjusting settings to
my liking, K-5 is the first Pentax DSLR that gets completely out of my way when
taking pictures. It is a remarkable feat and something that (although
subjective) is the best compliment any camera could get.

Interesting. I find that the K-5 is quicker to lock in and more accurate in all

I am certain Paul will give you a full answer. Here is mine, kind of second
hand. Paul has made a target which I think he can share. You put it on the
floor, you shoot it with your camera angled approximately 45 deg to the
floor and once you shoot you correct the AF with in-camera correction
module. By doing so you dial in or effectively produce an individual
correction for each of your lenses, provided you don't have too many. In
case of fast or cranky lenses, such as FA 50/1.4 or zoom lenses such as
Sigma 24-60/2.8 (Sigmas generally being known for AF imprecision) it can be
a difference between lost and made shot.

Now, since they are offering prices to good fathers, I also dialed in
specifically Galia's lenses for K-7. FA 50/1.4 needed minor correction, DA
21 and FA 100/3.5 did not.

It's not really my system. It's pretty much the standard for adjusting
autofocus, and Boris has it right. There are alternatives that are somewhat
easier to use but more difficult to construct, such as a method where the
target is a slope that rises at 45 degrees and the camera is level. The
target, whether on the floor or angled up from the floor has a series of
evenly spaced line and a central target line. I made my target line slightly
bolder than the rest and placed a red dot at its center. After shooting in
single center spot autofocus mode, with the center line as the target, you
simply observe the results and determine if the center line is indeed the
sharpest. If not, you can see if the camera is back-focusing or
front-focusing by determining which line is sharpest. The important part is
that you shoot of a tripod when adjusting and check the focus at wide open
apertures. I also check my results on the computer screen rather than trying
to decipher a tiny image on the camera viewing screen.

Well, what I did was adjust my Sigma 24-60 at 60 mm and check it at 24
mm. Due to difference in DOF, 60 mm focusing precision is more important
to me. But any way that makes sense would work. Unfortunately, at this
moment Pentax firmware does not allow multiple correction settings for
the same lens which might have come in handy here.

Or perhaps a yardstick on a table leaned against a wall. But unless your
yardstick has sharp, well defined markings, it might not work that well. My
target is printed on good photo paper with fine lines at high resolution. That
makes it easy to see which line is most in focus. With wide angles, it can be a
close call.

understood -- i actually use a well-made 50-year-old meter stick, and
the markings have texture in themselves, so in bright light it's pretty
easy to tell which are sharpest; but i also have a meter-long strip of
imagesetter film graduated in millimeters i could tape to a yard stick
-- might try it when i have a camera which can handle focus correction

There are several targets available out on the web. You print them on a
laser printer then fold them along the indicated lines and you've got
your 45 deg target. You place the target on a table and your camera on
a tripod.

Here's one I found with a 10 second Google search ...

http://www.k10dbook.com/AFCHART.pdf

An article that tells how to use it with the K20D:

http://www.zimbio.com/Digital+Cameras/articles/839/AF+adjustment+test+chart+help+Pentax+K20D

You'll probably have to cut 'n paste that URL. Here's the TinyURL version:

I've seen that. I can't print it large enough on a 13 x 10 printer to make it
useful. But the concept is interesting. Although the meter stick leaning
against a wall or my target on the floor works fine. I prefer my target of
evenly spaced fine lines to the complexity of this version.

 Hi!

Fired off some shots. Presently I have two major impressions:

 1. The shutter action is even softer than that of K7. The stealthiness of K5
 is remarkable.

 2. The AF under plain 60 Watt lamp is more thoughtful than that of K7. I am
not certain as to precision thereof, but it surely takes its time. Noticed
also that under LV it magnifies the area where it is focusing. May be I
don't need split focusing screen for this camera...

Today I am going to dial in my lenses as Paul says and do some shooting
 with the family.

Last but absolutely not least, K7 has officially been passed to Galia. I
changed the owner name in the settings and she smiled broadly when I showed
her that K7 was now hers.

 Boris

P.S. Pricewise, in shekels I paid for K5 less than I paid for either K10D or
 K7.
