Shhh. Quiet. Looks like you are disturbing them. No not really, I was shooting from a ditance with a 300mm on my K-3. Thanks for commenting. A few days after this the entire nest of 4 young robins was cleaned out by a group of crows, not only ending their life but ruining my chance to capture a sequence as the matured on the nest. Yeah, I'd say you clearly nailed the focus, Frank. And it's about as well as a robin can be portrayed, I reckon. Re: PESO: Robin, Michigan Style
Although I've sold a few as stock, I don't shoot birds seriously. But I find it a relaxing diversion. I sometimes walk three miles through the woods without getting off a single shot, cut it's still a good time. Today I got four or five keepers in just a mile or so. That's rare in my experience for anywhere other than a migratory fly zone like Point Pele in Ontario. Speaking of Point Pele I went there last May. Looking forward to making the trip again this year. Some list members are regulars there. On Mar 5, 2006, at 5:30 PM, Bob Shell wrote: On Mar 5, 2006, at 5:11 PM, Paul Stenquist wrote: Yep. As it is, it would be a great shot for learning what this particular bird looks like. Food for thought. It is doing something. It is staring intently at the photographer in an "alert" pose. Birds like this "robin" with eyes on the side of their head are looking at you when the side of their head is toward you. They arrived here last week, and the males like this fellow are busy picking out their territories and squabbling with other males over the prime real estate so they'll be all set when the females arrive. Sort of reminds me of the people around here! Bob

Hello Paul, A technically well done shot. The only downside for me is the bird is just sitting there - almost like it was stuffed. Somehow I'd like it be actively doing something. Nice picture! Our European Robin's would abandon their territory immediately after spotting this giant. One notable example of his work was a large beetle carved from plastic that we found in one of the collection drawers one day. It's label read Staphylinus styrofoamus. Bob

Re: PESO Robin
Wow, a Robin flame ;) I think I only confirmed it was a "real" Robin like you mentioned earlier. Which was very interesting for me since I never realized why they mixed up the common names. Toine > > Hey, I just tells them like they is. I doesn't make them up! > > Bob > >
RE: PESO Robin
Nice pictures. Not bad for a "cheap" Sigma. I think their lenses are a bit under rated, and work well for moi. Re: PESO Robin
Thanks for your nice comments. And yes it's a Robin (erithacus rubecula). In the Netherlands we call it Roodborstje (red breast). It's a very funny bird and defends it's territory aggressively. I considered cropping the shot but I like it this way (very small bird against a big background) and this way the CA errors of the lens don't show. Toine

Re: PESO Robin
You must be using a good technique. Those aren't bad shots. The compositions are a little weak but otherwise very nice captures. Kenneth Waller - Original Message - From: "Toine" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: PESO Robin This week I enabled myself with a cheap Sigma A 5,6-400 mm and mounted the lens together with a Takumar-A 2x TC on my istD. http://360.leende.net/sigma400 Hope you like it. Not the greatest pictures and the lens could be better, but I enjoyed the wildlife. The Sigma works like any Pentax-A lens on the istD, combined with the Takumar-A 2x it only works in manual green button mode. Toine

Hello Toine, I think you sold yourself short. This is quite nice. I was expecting much worse based on your description of lens and converter. Just saw my first robin of spring a few minutes ago. Thought about getting out a big lens, but I figured he'd be gone before I could get ready. It's a robin all right, the REAL robin. We do not have robins in the Americas. The bird commonly called robin in the USA is actually more properly called migratory thrush (Turdus migratorius). The early settlers of the USA were not naturalists, mostly coming from cities, and they got nomenclature all screwed up. They called vultures buzzards, when a buzzard is actually a type of hawk. They didn't just screw up birds, they also got mammals wrong. They looked at elk and instead called them moose. They looked at native wapiti and called them elk. They really made a mess of it for those who came along later and wanted to reconcile US names with European names. Bob
