stuck with me all these years later.


I don't believe the legend, but I do remember it.

skewers)”.

This may be the origin of the popular British pastime of dogging, when you go 
out in the evening to the nearest woods looking for a right old dog to 
spit-roast...

Never too old to learn something new: Apparently we have a native
species of Cornus and even local names like kenel, knel, kornel,
kernoelje, konkernel. The name probably comes from the Greek kranaos
(hard / solid).
Now I need to go and find a Kornoelje in the wild. And now I need to
know why it's called Dogwood in English.

The dutch name is Kornoelje, no idea why. Only found in gardens. I think I
want one for my garden.

First, the background is a blue sheet from my "Photo Studio in a Box":

The kit also has white, red and grey backgrounds.
I cut off a few blossoms while I was trimming trees in the front yard for
the express purpose of playing around with this system.

Most of the shots were centered when I took them, but I cropped them to
bring the center of attention a bit to one side.  I have been frequently,
and justifiably, been criticized here and elsewhere for making my images
too centered and two "square."

I also tried a vertical crop a couple of times, but didn't care for the
result, probably because the stem was too short.

Nice shot. Vibrant and interesting. I'm torn on centering, as someone 
suggested. I might prefer it as a vertical with the blossom in the upper 2/3rds 
of frame. Centering would make it somewhat ordinary I think.

As far as I can tell, the SIlkypix in browser mode will automatically 
import all images in the selected directory. On the directory is loaded 
switch to laboratory mode to select and adjust an individual file. Once 
adjusted there is an option under the File menu called "Save As With 
Adjustments" that lets you save that single image as a tiff or JPG.


I had a hard time figuring out batch processing - to batch process, open 
a single file in Laboratory, make your adjustments, right click on it 
and select "Copy Parameters." Then go back to Browser mode, select all 
the images you want to process, right click on them and select "Past 
Parameters." After all of the selected images are updated you can either 
right click on them and click on "Process Multiple Files" - or you can 
click on the same command under the "File" menu. That opens a dialog box 
re options for saving the batch. Once you hit OK you'll get the message 
"It was registered as a background job." The first time I tried this I 
thought nothing happened and relaunched the background job about 4 
times, but then realized it just take a LONG time process an image.


I only use SIlkypix for pixel shift images. The adjustments that are 
available are very basic - exposure, white balance, saturation and 
overall hue. But the exposure tab has a curves tool, exposure adjustment 
and a decent shadow fill tool (called the "dodging" tool) so nailing the 
overall exposure is not difficult. It has a lot of options for noise 
reduction and lens aberration correction, but with the K1 I don't see 
much need for either. The panel called "rotate/shift" is a complete 
mystery to me - it seems to just twist the image around and distort it.

I don't use lightroom - locked in with Photoshop CS6 for the time being.
Adobe stopped updating ACR for CS6 with the K3II as the last Pentax

DNG's converted in Silkypix - the amount of detail in stacked images is
really impressive.
2.

I post process and LIghtroom does not support layers.  Aside from the
updated ACR I have not seen any update in Photoshop CC that is very
compelling.

I'll give Silkypix another go.  I might have some questions for you!
:)  I think the biggest problem I have is that to import an image,
there does not seem to be a conventional dialog that you can navigate
through directories.  It seems to want you to type in the whole path.

Thanks, Ken. I actually snipped the flower and a few inches of branch 
from the tree and brought them inside to shoot under lights. It still is 
a time consuming process.

I like that photo a lot!
The sharp focus on the details within the pedals is excellent and draws the eye.
The soft bokeh is a contrast and the colorful pedals frame the subject.
The repeat of the blossom in the background is a wonderful accent.

Ann, the reason one doesn't see dogwood blossoms head-on that often
is that I had to get up on a ladder to get this angle!  All my dogwood

Usually one expects the light from a softbox diffuser to be even all
across the surface. That is, if you metered the light in the center,
sides and corners you'd expect the same reading. Plus, the light is
generally diffused twice before it reaches your subject (there's an
inner diffuser) so it's super soft, spreading light; directionless
within the area of the front diffuser.

With an umbrella softbox you achieve that by installing your flash
near the front diffuser, but pointing inward toward the silvered
insides of the umbrella's central spine. So the light bounces all
around inside and exits through the diffuser (white scrim) nice and
soft and even, doubly diffused.

For a different look you can reverse the flash by setting it near
the umbrella spine, pointing toward the diffuser. Now most of the
light will be concentrated near the center of the diffuser with
fall-off toward the edges and corners. If you meter the surface the
center will be 2-3 stops brighter than the edges. In addition, there
will be some hard specular (directional) light because you no longer
have a double diffusion effect.

This actually resembles the look from a beauty dish, which is a neat
hack because those suckers are very pricey objects (apparently made
from rare elements or something).

That's what I would have guessed, but given my functionally zero flash
experience I figured asking was better than guessing.  This sounds
functionally similar to just using a diffuser in front of a flash, is
that correct?  If yes, is there any advantage to this approach beyond
having your umbrella already set up and it's easier to reverse the flash
than switch to a different flash setup?

The umbrella is almost parabolic and contains most of the light,
preventing side-spill. If that's not a concern then holding a diffuser
18 from your flash would get a similar, not identical, effect.

The dogwoods are fruiting like crazy right now in southern Ontario.
Check the bark; it'll most often be red.

We have a lot of dogwood around the garden because it provides bright
points of colour in the winter. Looks beautiful with snow (remember
that stuff?) on it.

Well, if I had a view like that out the front door, I might not go further to 
shoot, either!

Pity the base of the tree is cut off.  Otherwise, I really like the shot.  The 
shape of the foreground dogwood contrasts nicely with the vertical trunks 
behind, and the rendering is excellent.

Well. after my comment about being lazy today, I went out and spent 3+
hours shoveling out the driveway.  There was 12-14 inches at the time,
and it was still coming down.  I'll have to be out there again
tomorrow morning to get the rest of it.

All of a sudden, the snow doesn't look as pretty as it did this
morning .  .  .  .

You know, that's a lovely composition, but I have a mental block about
nature shots, in particular botanicals, in BW.  I think it's probably
a failing in myself rather than in photographers' culture.  I just
can't understand why you'd capture a flower and then take its colour
away.  Lots of people do, so I'm clearly in a minority here.  Oh well.

FWIW, those petal were white to begin with.  The only real color was a 
tiny bit of green in the center.  But I know what you mean about the 
mental block.  BW foliage has become a bit of cliche the last few 
years.  I got turned on to Paul Caponigro's work several years ago, and 
it seems that everyone and their brother is trying something similar 
these days.  But I like the general look of them.

I enjoyed seeing the two blossoms up close and the detail in them.
I liked looking to the left and following the trail of blossoms up and
back to the tree.
The final tree trunk at the extreem left anchors the whole thing for me,
and sends my eye back to the blossoms.

The hard part is that the blossoms bounce around with
the slightest breeze, and the lens is just a few
inches away.  I made about 50 exposures, and only a
handful are without motion blur.
