JCO lamented on the optical and build quality of the Takumars and feels that they reached their peak in 1971. He also noted that the build quality deteriorated as Pentax moved from the K through the M and A series. The Ms in particular were a dissapointment as they knocked the better Ks off the shelf. This was for economic and compactness reasons. The As, in some focal lengths improved somewhat optically, but the build quality did not. Pentax, with the Limited series, has proven that they can build high quality lenses to match the Takumars. It is sad to say that they are too late as they have given up their pro market potential to Cannon and Nikon. That being said, Mike, what other camera manufacturer enjoys the same level of interest on the internet as Pentak with AOHC, Boz's, Stan's and Yoshikiko's marvelous sites? I don't have any old screwmount stuff, but I do have and older Tak 105 6x7 and the new 45 6x7. While there is a big difference in build quality, I'm not sure the trade off is so bad re: weight factor... At least they had the decency to use a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar and not the piece of crap SMC version they came out with later This may be controversial but I think Pentax quality peaked with the SPII of 1971 ( Thirty years ago ). Yeah the SPF had open aperture metering but the finder wasnt as good and the lenses took a step back when the started using rubber and later plastic... Super-Multi-Coated Takumars ( all metal and glass) were the ultimate quality, SMC Tersions were lower quality, K lower again, M lower again , A even lower, you get the picture... Nope, I remember this from a bit back. Someone on ebay was selling the large one, which was meant as a display for photo stores. I couldn't agree more! The older lenses are the most valued (not the most value) in my collection. I actually use my old SPs more than I do my SPIIs because on the smoother body due to no flash shoe.
