Cotty,

I went to the Rossman website, and they provide free estimates; and say that
repair of liquid damage is usually $325-$450.

I bought a new (to me) 2015 MBP Friday, because I’m as dependent on it for work
as you are. If I can have a second working computer for $325-450, though, it
would be dandy.

Alas, no trips to the Mother Country planned. Heading across the pond for a
conference in Rome in a few days, though.

Understood Rick.

If there is an area of 'corrosion' on the PCB, I certainly stand corrected.
Have you ever spilled liquid on top of the keyboard or has it ever got wet? In
normal domestic operation 'corrosion' on PCBs is not very common.

The capacitor I mention is a design flaw in that it doesn't seem to have the
longevity to do the job it's supposed to, hence when it fails the machine won't
usually boot up. Replacing this cap will doubtless allow it to boot again.

I'm not saying that this is viable for you, or that you should be doing this -
all I'm saying is that most repair techs won't know about this (bad cap) issue
and will put it down to anything else that fits into their sphere of
recognition.

I simply mention it because it is highly likely to be the cause of your 2008
MBP not booting up. If you're ever due this way, by all means bring it along
and I'll fix it for you :-)

Re: MBP RIP

2018-11-03 Thread John
When I saw the subject line I was afraid some former stalwart of the PDML had
passed on to his/her final reward.

On 11/2/2018 20:46, Rick Womer wrote:

On January 14, 2009 my wife and I had reservations on an early evening flight
from PHL to LHR; we were on our way to Oxford for a six-month sabbatical (Joy
doing research for a book at the Bodleian ; me working in a lab at “The
Churchill” learning about interactions between malignant tumors and their
hosts).

That morning, the high-end HP laptop provided by the hospital I work at died,
3 months past its 3y warranty. Slicing and dodging through meters of red tape
in a half-hour, I rushed it over to the repair shop the hospital used. They
phoned a couple of hours later (~1pm) to say that the northbridge was
cracked; they had shimmed it with some folded electrical tape, but didn’t
think it would last long.

I scurried over, retrieved the HP, strode briskly to the university's
computer store, and bought a late-2008 MacBook Pro. I phoned our computer guy
from the store, trotted back to my office, and we spent a few hours shoveling
software and data from the HP into the MBP. We finished, and I went home,
took a shower, and we left for the airport.

Since then the MBP has been my work computer, getting heavy use every day.
Almost every evening I carried it home, worked on it, carried it back, put it
in its docking station, and worked on it more. I upgraded the RAM, replaced
the spinny drive with an SSD, and replaced the battery a few times. It was
utterly faithful for 9 years and 10 months (almost 9 years past the end of
its 1-year warranty).

Before the MBP I’d had two top-of-the-line Toshiba laptops and two high-end
HPs. All four snuffed it a few months after their 3-year warranties ended.

This morning, the MBP would not start. The computer shop said that there was
some old, slow corrosion on the motherboard, from some moisture entering
through the row of ports on the right side at some point. That wasn’t
surprising, since my commute is a 1 mile walk in all kinds of weather,
carrying it in a backpack.

So I bought a refurbished 2015 MBP, took the SSD out of the old one, and our
computer guy and I will transfer the data Monday morning.

Sigh.

If anyone is interested, I have a late-2008 MBP battery in good condition,
and will have a 450MP SSD available on Monday.

Re: MBP RIP

2018-11-03 Thread Steve Cottrell
I run a 2012 MBP maxxed out and SSD, best machine ever had. Only got it as the
2010 MBP ket rebooting with heavy editing use - graphics issue. The 2010 was
handed down to my wife who obvs doesn't video edit or mash graphics - BUT as
the years progressed, more and more websites require graphics intensive
hardware as they get crazier with ads, video, you name it. So the 2010 started
to fail again by just randomly shutting down.

Looked into replacing it, but the research threw up soem interesting stuff. It
was originally thought that the 2nd graphics processing unit (GPU - MacBook
Pros have 2 GPUs rather than a single in a MacBook) was failing by dry joints
or what have you - and some reflowing repairs did solve some issues - but one
guy chased the issue on the 2010 to a capacitor that regularly fails because it
was *the wrong bit of hardware for the job*. Let that sink in for a moment. It
was designed with an inherent flaw.

So, watched the video for the repair (see link below) and bought a couple of
new caps (7 bucks the pair) and replaced one on the motherboard (a voltage
controlling cap for the 2nd GPU) and hey presto - random shutdowns gone and
machine in great health again.

Had to improve my soldering kit and technique but no biggy, and even with that
the cost was a couple of dozen GBP and 3 hours of my time.

This guy is pretty interesting to listen to as well - he will readily slag off
anything on the market due to poor design and workmanship - Apple especially!
:-)

NB you might find links to the 2008 issue here as well.

In 2010, someone dropped a friend's early 2008 MBP and caused a dent in
the rear left corner. Fortunately, the guy was insured and the insurance
asked for the computer to be sent to their expert for evaluation. The
expert dropped it yet again, this time on the rear right corner. So,
without any further hassle the insurance paid my friend a new MBP and
that was that for him.

Unimpressed by all this, the dented MBP was still working. Being a
really nice guy, my friend gave it to me. Two years later, it wouldn't
boot anymore. Not being one to give up easily, I found out that this was
a known prob with some NVidia graphics chip failing. It took a little
prodding but Apple eventually replaced the mainboard at their - or
rather NVidia's - expense.

This MBP has been my faithful companion until a few weeks ago when I
finally decided I'd want a little more computing power. It still works
flawlessly but has been getting a bit slow with the large files from the
K-3 and a bunch of newer software didn't run under El Capitan, the
latest system it would accept.

So, I got myself a mid 2012 MBP, second-hand from a dealer with one
year's warranty, in almost mint condition. Gee, this things runs circles
around my old MBP and surprisingly around my home system, a 2012 Mac
Mini. Seems to be the GPU in the Macbook that makes the difference.

Let's hope it will also live to the grand old age (over ten years and
counting) of its predecessor which is still doing fine and has found a
new lease of life as a test and measurement system for my vintage hifi gear.
