Re: OT: best all-in-one PC?

2011-07-13 Thread Paul Ewins
Changing platforms via an upgrade is the easiest route. You just buy the
upgrade version of the suite for the new platform and when you do the
installation it will probably reject your existing product key. You ring up
Adobe support and explain the situation and they will give you a new one that
will work (don't forget to write that one down) and away you go. I've converted
a couple of suites this way and also dealt with products that have been
upgraded so many times that the original product key no longer worked
(originally you kept the same key when upgrading, now they give you a new one)
and each time Adobe support was very helpful.

Adobe has a "cross-grade" program, but i'm pretty sure it's only for
current versions; i expect CS3 would run acceptably under Parallels
or VMWare, and quite well under Boot Camp

Current version only. She'd have to already have CS5 to "cross-grade".

But, if/when she decides to upgrade to the current version, she can
switch platforms for no additional charge beyond the upgrade price.

Which can still be substantial. Adobe is EXPENSIVE!

If she has a registered version of CS3, Adobe allows platform swaps as
part of the upgrade process, so she could get the Mac version of CS5 for
the same price as upgrading the Windows version.

Or if she already had the Windows version of CS5 she could do the
platform swap for free.

I am not a Mac person ... BUT.

I haven't seen an all-in-one PC that I thought worked adequately. With a
PC you're better off getting a generic box where you can upgrade
components if you need to later. You never want anything in a PC that
has a proprietary form factor.

If an all-in-one is what she wants, she would probably be better off
with a Mac. I'm pretty sure the latest Macs based on Intel processors
can also be set to run Windoze if she needs to continue to use her
legacy software.

And some companies will allow you to exchange Windoze versions for Mac
versions without gouging you on price if you're changing platforms.
Other companies ship both Windows & Mac versions in the same box, so she
might already have the Mac version of the software laying around somewhere.

A: You can transfer licenses between OS versions. Contact an Adobe

Nothing says she can't boot Windows on the iMac. In fact, it's
supported from Apple. If you use Parallels, you can be running Windows
apps and Mac apps at the same time. Just don't be skimpy on the
memory.

And of the "all-in-one" computers out there, the only one I'd trust is the iMac.

Just a thought - it is often feasible, and morally and legally correct, to move
software from an old computer to a new one. Second thought - much software
comes packaged for either a Windows or Mac. So, mighten she have the option of
an iMac and then moving her software over? Alternatively, she could use all of
her old Windows software on the iMac in emulation mode, gradually shift to Mac
versions when it is time for upgrades.
