Was out celebrating New Years Eve with my middle daughter at (of all
places) a local bar called the Bovine Sex Club. The feature band was
called Creepshow. I got very few pix of the band, as a mosh pit was
happening, and when I got close to the stage I tend to get jostled too
much to shoot in low light with slow shutter speed.

So I spent lots of time photographing the young people around the bar.
This young lady seemed especially pensive. I know, I focused on the
"wrong eye" (wish I'd caught that front eye) but I still rather like
this one:

I was shooting with the A50mm f1.7, so I didn't have to get that close
- she was maybe 4 or 5 feet way. I focused manually, pointed at her
and she didn't seem to notice, so I snapped.

Sometimes they notice (as you can see in my Bovine Sex Club GESO that
I just posted) sometimes they don't (like the two barmaids); either
way the photo can be interesting.

I guess I just try to look natural, always keep the camera out in the
open (so it's no big deal when I put it up to my face) and don't make
any sudden movements. After I take a shot or two, I calmly put the
camera down as if nothing happened. Surprising how often I'm ~not~
noticed.

Thanks for the comment, Bob!

much to shoot in low light with slow shutter speed.

So I spent lots of time photographing the young people around the bar.
This young lady seemed especially pensive. I know, I focused on the
"wrong eye" (wish I'd caught that front eye) but I still rather like
this one:

the image of her is perfect in my eyes. the "missed" focus on the eyes
seems to add to the pensive, far away look.

I'd agree that ~she~ is. I have to say, she was the most beautiful

He was her boyfriend, and for some reason I wanted him in the shot,
even if no one else knows who he is.

This one required cropping, so I already cropped it to square. I'll
try your suggestion and see how it works.

Thanks for the comment!

my thought is that she is perfect but I would crop down a bit more to
get the background bloke's nose shadow out of it... and incidentally if
keeping the aspect ratio was important lose the ear.

I know you try not to crop these shots after the camera so its just my
flawed aesthetics.

Re: PESO: Pensive

2008-07-20 Thread P. J. Alling
It's more or less a normal lens on the APS-C sensor cameras, (true
normal equivalent to the 43mm on film), and a relatively slow normal
lens at that. I currently carry an A 24mm f2.8 for a wide, 43 ltd.as a
longish normal and the M 85 f2 for a nice general telephoto as my
walking around kit. There really isn't a place in that lineup for the
30mm. Now if my widest rectilinear prime was a 20mm then I could
replace the 43mm with the 30mm or the 35mm f2.0..

aren't you using it that often with digital? it seems to give good

I think it's one of the nicest lenses Pentax has ever made in that focal
length, (~28mm). I don't use mine nearly enough since I shoot mostly
digital.
