To my eye the B&W version works better - color is kind of a distraction from the main visual elements. Interesting.. I darkened the black area a bit to make sure it was totally featureless and black , actually. I couldnt see any detail in it at all, although when I went to use the magic wand in elements apparently the program did as it selected two sections of the black mass. I still can't see anything but black there in the photo as it is now. But then, I don't have the brightness of my monitor set at 100 - because I can't look at it at all if I do and when the power was getting browned out last week it flickered. I upped it to 100 and think i see what you mean. The wedge shaped sheen of the dark block above left is almost lost in the B&W version. I little "lift"(!) to recover more of that might make the B&W even better, I believe.
