Precision Camera does indeed offer Pentax repair service: I just got
my DA*16-50/2.8 back from them about five minutes ago (they fixed the
stuck zoom ring and gave it a general cleaning & lubrication).

When they phoned yesterday to tall my it was shipped I specifically
asked if they still do Pentax repairs (in case I was the last one!)
and they confirmed they do.

On another note... I sent the lens to them via the US Postal Service
and if you check their tracking web site (as of 5:00 p.m. US east
coast time) you see it hasn't even *arrived* at Precision Camera yet!

>From this I conclude that either Precision Camera shipped the lens
back to me at faster-than-light speed... or the USPS tracking web site
sucks.

That person I spoke to yesterday was very emphatic.
My camera problems have been
worked out and I no longer need
to locate a repair service.
Thanks for contact.

Jack, I know you've decided to replace the body, but I did find a link
to a Ricoh Pentax repair page.  It's possible that the person you spoke
with didn't actually know that Precision does actually repair Pentax
cameras as they don't offer phone support for Pentax, only Nikon and
Olympus.  Sony and Pentax seem to be web only options, anyway here's the
page in case anyone needs it.

By the way this link didn't work for the last couple of days.

Haven't decided, for certain, if I will submit it for repair, but it is being
considered. This is the second

replacement since my "trusty" old K3 completely died this spring.

Thanks!

PJ,
I met Eric as he was winding down his career in camera repair.
He was in west suburban Chicago working part-time(?) in a business he sold(?).
I'd take my old Pentax gear to him in the mornings before work.
He 'retired' to Tennessee, but still does cameras when the farm(?) allows.
Nice guy, maybe your age?

Frankly, my first thought is that this can't be that pricey or hard to
find of a lens and that replacement would be faster/cheaper (or at
least close to the same cost) but then I saw you said it was an A
lens. I think those may be a lot harder to find.

2013-07-17 Thread P.J. Alling
The, relatively beat up cosmetically, copy that Boris found on Pentax
fora had an asking price of $200.00. Even having suffered a drop to a
concrete floor the version I have /looks/ like it's in better shape.
The entire problem seems to be that it struck the floor mount first, the
rear lens cap took most of the impact and shattered. However it seems to
have passed a little, maybe a lot, I can't tell, not sure how much a
little or lot would be in this case, of the impact force on to the
aperture stop down lever. The flange that protects the stop down lever
is made out of some kind of tough black plastic, and that's slightly
deformed. I'm hoping that nothing sheared off, that all that's wrong is
a metal part that can be carefully re-shaped.

Re: Help request, who knows a lens repair service that will even look at older third party lenses?

2013-07-14 Thread P.J. Alling
I did that when the Pentax F 70-210mm I was using jammed, the data
brush was mangled, and that part is made out of unobtanium. I paid
about $70, for the first one, and $150 for the replacement, last I
checked the a good condition Pentax F 70-210 is going for over $200.

This version of the Vivitar S1 70-210 with the A contacts was rare to
begin with and prices have been steadily rising over the last couple of
years. When I bought my first Vivitar S1 70-210, I picked up a LN- copy
of the second version in the original box for about $69.00 and passed on
a similar condition version 3 for the same money because I was shooting
LX and MX cameras had no particular interest in program operation so I
didn't need the A contacts, and I much preferred the fixed maximum
aperture over the variable aperture.

After going Digital, I decided that zoom and stop down metering was
causing me to miss to many shots, I searched for a version 3 and paid
almost three times as much just a few years later. I haven't seen one at
KEH since I bought the one I have now.

I may have to do that, but I'm hoping to have more options.

Pentax Pickup Repair Service in Japan

2003-03-02 Thread KT Takeshita
Hi folks,

According to the Pentax Japan site, they have started what they call the
Pentax Pickup Repair Service.

It is much like some of the laptop repair service in that, Pentax send
packaging material for the item requiring repair service, pick it up at the
desired time, repair and return/deliver to the designated location. The
cost is 1,800yen ($10) flat (plus repair cost if out of warranty, of course)
regardless of the item or location (in Japan). From the delivery of
packaging material, repair and return delivery takes between 7 to 10 days.

This can also be ordered through the internet. Internet quotation for
the repair/service will also start soon.

Looks like Pentax are really gearing up for the total service.

Cheers,

Ken
