Re: SV: I have committed a book

2014-01-08 Thread Larry Colen
Jostein,
Did you make the book using the blurb software? Or did you make it in
lightroom, indesign or something else that will let you export a PDF copy?

It's an excellent collection of photos by the way. I suspect that
1) You could just print them up and have a show ready to go.

2) You could use the book to advertise photo trips to California and
the SouthWest states. How many people signing up would it take to
finance you for a trip? Set up several consecutive week long trips
that people could sign up for whichever ones they wanted/could afford.

I suspect that photos of Sunny California (tm) would make for a very
attractive travel brochure in Oslo, sometime around March.

The book was designed inside Lightroom. In LR-5 you don't have to save as PDF
and then upload. There's a button for direct upload to Blurb that takes care of
the whole thing.

SV: I have committed a book

2014-01-07 Thread Alunfoto - Jostein Øksne

Ann put it quite succinctly. :-)

Actually, I think about half the shots in the book are produced around
sunrise or sunset. Another fourty percent are from normal hours, and the
rest are night shots. I totally agree with Ann and the others commenting on
the quality of the light. I certainly prefer the light that happens when the
sun is close to the horizon.

Another factor is that I soon realised that the midday hours were the best
for doing the transport legs. I could be more efficient if arriving at a new
place with a couple of daylight hours left to do reconnoisance, procure
maps, pay entrance fees to parks, etc.

a note on geographic idiom: the US southwest is vaguely defined; you are
using a broad definition, which seems justified by the map, but i think most
people here wouldn't consider California part of the southwest; US region

this is most obvious in the definition of midwest, which is mostly east of

SV: I have committed a book

2014-01-07 Thread Alunfoto - Jostein Øksne
A three weeks roadtrip for an area the size of whole of Scandinavia (at
least), can't be anything but touch-and-go. In my honest opinion that makes
all pictures obtained this way into travelogue shots regardless of the sun's
position in the sky at the time of pressing the button.

To be honest, I mentally regard the whole trip as reconnoisance for further
trips some time in the future. In particular I'd love to go back to the High
Sierras and to Death Valley. Awesome places that deserve a lot more
attention than I had time to give them.
