We stayed in Statesville for the week or so we were there.

That’s an impressive bit of detective work- you could be right about Winston
Salem, I may have got the places confused. My overriding memory is that the
place seemed deserted and we jaywalked a lot, since it was a new experience for
us (no such thing over here).

Also it was very hard to get a drink in Statesville.

Actually, the one place in North Carolina I *KNOW* it is NOT is Raleigh,
because I live there and don't recognize it. 

Clues I can see in the image:
• Four track crossing in Downtown area
• Wachovia Bank building with parking deck
• Chest??? (Chestnut st?), Church St, street (Main? or Salem?) &
Liberty St - all running parallel to the tracks.

My first impression was High Point, NC, and as Ann noted the others look
like they are from the Statesville, NC area.

Also not Durham, because I know that's not the Wachovia Bank building
that was there plus not the right railroad crossing & combination of
streets.

... and I did a lot more Google map exploration on the two streets I
COULD name for sure and ...

It's Winston Salem, intersection of 4th St E & N Chestnut st, looking
west along 4th St E.; right next to the RJ Reynolds tobacco factory.

36.09882411283094, -80.24183462127905

The next three cross streets to the west after N Chestnut are N Church
St, N Main St & N Liberty st.

The old Wachovia Bank building has been torn down and replaced by the
Forsyth County Public Safety Center & three of the four tracks have been
removed.

So, as I was saying, this is a small gallery from a trip to NC in 1997, my first of

converted to b in LR.

I happened to pick these at random earlier today when trying out digitisation

a 30mm micro-4/3rds macro lens and LUMIX GX8.

That is an excellent little gallery. Each shot stands on its own, but the
whole is certainly greater than its parts, conveying a strong feeling of
small town America in a prior era.

Thanks for enduring all the difficulties to share this with us!

Well hello there Walker Evans... I looked at the photos before reading
your comment post..

I did not know you had ever been to this side of the pond..and though
you were posting photos by Evans or Robert Frank...

You were obviously in the "historic" district of Statesville.. because
what you photographed was what one would have seen in the 1950's and
earlier..

nice shooting :-)
