Re: PESO: Swing, Batter, Swing !

2011-06-24 Thread John Sessoms
I found it more a matter of timing, patience and repetition ... you just
gotta' keep running that play 'til you get it right.

We were required to shoot baseball every week for small format class
last summer. Acceptable submissions had to have the ball in the frame
we weren't allowed to photograph pitchers or batters - had to be a play
at one of the bases.

Outfielders diving or climbing the wall to make a catch were also
acceptable, but it had to be sharp.

OTOH, we got in free at the local games, so you could go 3 - 4 times a
week if you had to to get your assignments done.

Photographing baseball is fun, but I wouldn't really want to do it for a
living.

Re: PESO: Swing, Batter, Swing !

2011-06-24 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
There weren't many close plays on the bases during this game. This
wasn't really close, but I did get the ball (barely) in the frame with
the first baseman: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=13514688 .

I had limited time, as I was attending a party in one of the luxury
boxes behind home plate. I plan to go to the ball park by myself, so
I can walk around and concentrate on waiting for those action photo
opportunities. As you say, it is a matter of timing and even more a
matter of patience.

I like the shot, Dan, but I would like to see a bit more space on the left
hand side, which seems too tightly cropped. Cheers, Christine

Thanks for you suggestions, Christine. I was trying to fill the frame
with action, but I do see your point, and I did crop the left and top
of the frame, so I will definitely go back and make another crop with
more room in the direction of the pitcher.
