I'm deciding if I should fire sale my 6x7 gear for some stupidly
ridiculous price (I'm thinking the body, 8 lenses, bellows and
accessories for somewhere around 500 dollars), or keep the stuff, and
buy a 645 with an adapter to use the 6x7 lenses.

Most medium format lenses are much lower in absolute resolution than
35mm lenses. They don't need to be as good because they cover a much
larger film (or sensor) area and thus yield equal size prints with
much lower magnification and thus obtain very high print resolution
without the need for the MTF numbers required of 35mm lenses.
Interestingly, one of the exceptions to this is the Pentax 645
35mm/3.5 lens: It's reportedly superb even by 35mm standards and in
the early days of full-frame digital there was a small business in
Nikon-to-P645 and Canon-to-P645 adapters for people who wanted to use
this lens (I think Zorki or someone also made a shift or tilt/shift
adapter to take advantage of the medium format lens' large image
circle).

2014-07-07 Thread Zos Xavius
>From what I've heard the 6x7 lenses were superb and supposedly better
than the zeiss lenses hassy used on the V series and also better than
the 645 lenses. I don't know how true that exactly is, but I've heard
it repeated from various people that shot MF with pentax bodies. If
you factor 3-4 really good primes to match the D800, I'm guessing that
the price point doesn't look all that different, though I must say the
new 645 lenses are definitely not cheap by any means. You could build
a film era kit for what, somewhere between $1-2000? Some of those
lenses won't match the Z's sensor, but I imagine would at least keep
you in D800 territory. If you ask me, the D800 pushes glass hard and
that makes getting the best results out of it an expensive proposition
anyways. It takes fairly good lenses to match even a 24mp sensor, so
unless you just want at best 20-24mp images using 2nd rate glass. If
that's the case, you're still getting nowhere near the 645Z in terms
of resolving power. The pixel pitch and smaller format means
diffraction is going to cut in faster as well, negating the benefit of
lacking an AA filter. The D800 is diffraction limited at f5.6. The
645Z looks like its at f8 or so if this calculator I'm using is
correct. Probably a stop ahead.

It's a slam dunk if you want an MF DSLR and have that much money. It's
just that most of us don't meet either qualification!

Of course, it's not just the camera you have to buy but lenses as well

(just going quickly through the review):

"But we have to put these relatively minor critiques in context: the
645Z is light-years ahead of any other MF-class camera, and frankly
better than just about all of the FF 35mm machines in user interface."

"It's almost like an actual photographer was involved in the design.
Revolutionary."

"The files off the "Z" are superb."

"Here's the kicker..the 21MP, 'lowest' quality jpegs were,
on-screen, just amazing. Converted to B&W, and tweaked quite a bit in
LR, they are gorgeous." "All of this comes in the context of a camera
with amazing high ISO capabilities. CCDs simply cannot compete on
that front at all. "Bottom line is superb IQ. "

"The "Z" is a real working pro's field camera in every sense. It's a
camera that's almost never annoying to use, and will no doubt be a
trusty companion for years of use. I suspect the people who buy them
will grow to love them."

"The Pentax 645D may well have the best high ISO performance of any
camera to date (including the Sony A7s), and with little doubt has the
lowest noise high ISO performance of any medium format camera,
including as best we can tell that of the Phase One and Hasselblads
that use the same sensor."

" It's a world-class image-maker in every regard, and the fullest
realization of the dream of a 35mm quality MF camera."

We all need negative, nitpicking reviews like that!

Bitching about the green button and auto iso? Really? Seems like they
had to find things to nitpick. You can set the green button to toggle
auto iso, but I guess they didn't realize that. The interface is
pretty damned customizable.

An aggravated, uninspired reluctant literal utterance that simply reflects his
frustration at failing to produce a negative review.

This is not inconsistent with my general impression of LL; I'm not
sure it's any worse than it ever was.

To suggest that nobody really needs it would be like telling wedding (film)
photographers that their blads were unnecessary, that 135 was enough.

LL clearly didn't want to give this camera a favorable review and yet
kind of had to because there is so little to fault about the camera.
