Re: Bird id and songs was PESO: Another bird photo - What is it?
If I hd not been so lazy I would have gone to the cornel site myself :-) BTW - for all you birders out there - especially those in the Augusta , Georgia area.. During the masters, it was nice to listen to bird songs - the always recognizeable cardinal, and a few others however .. there was one bird who kept saying "you eat,you you eat, you eat" usually 3 times like that. IF anyone has any clues who he is I could take those and look up the photos then play the songs on the Cornell site. The call is something I've heard lots. I have cassettes of birdsongs but they are for western birdies -not that it couldn't be thre somewhere. thanks a bunch ann On 5/18/2014 13:37, steve harley wrote: on 2014-05-17 19:59 Ann Sanfedele wrote apologies thank you and accepted, but really, no need to apologize — would that the birds knew we pursued their identities with zeal -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Red Tails have horizontal bands on the underside of their tails (the red is on top) and a rounded tail. Sharp-shinned have a very squared off tail. But I do have the 1962 edition - maybe new models have come out with banded tails. :-) There are regional pattern differences but I'd expect a red tail to have have just a single thin brown band along the outer edge of the tail feathers, maybe some other light banding on the tail. Bob's Red Tail shows this: http://pug.komkon.org/02may/rthawk.html Tom's hawk has at least three preeminent wide dark bands on the tail. Considering the size, I'd go with my second choice, Cooper's Hawk. I took a quick glance at the Backyard Bird Count stats for Viriginia and D.C. - sharp shinned and cooper's hawks pop up in both with equal frequency, though only about half as frequently as red-tails. - MCC - Mark Cassino Photography Kalamazoo, MI http://www.markcassino.com -

Speaking of birds... yesterday as I waled out my front door a bird flew out of the bushes along side my driveway. Nothing unusual about that except that after it gained some altitude and slowed down I could see it was a raptor of some sort. Kind of surprising to see it in the shrubbery here in the middle of Pittsburgh. My guess is that it was enjoying lunch, which would be one of the small rabbits or birds that are so plentiful around here. -- Mark Roberts Photography and writing www.robertstech.com

Re: bird ID
Nice shot - but a bit hard to ID - how big was it? Based on the shape of the tail, the markings on the beak, and the pattern of the breast feathers my first guess would be a female sharp shinned hawk. Should of been just under a foot long if that is the case. Second guess would be a female Cooper's hawk - though the tail should be more fanned (but it might just be wet). A Cooper's would be more like just over a foot long. The immature birds of both species look a lot like the females, but usually have longer wing and tail feathers that make them look deceptively large. But this one seems to have a relatively short tail - hard to tell with the fence there. two long shots - possibly a female Northern Harrier or Northern Goshawks. Like I said - long shots. A red tail would not have the bands inside the tail feathers. The length of the tail in proportion to the body, and the length of the outmost dark band at the end of the tail in proportion to the tail length really suggest a Sharp Shinned Hawk. Re: bird ID
Tom, Looks a lot like this one, a Red Tailed Hawk that lives near the office. http://pug.komkon.org/02may/rthawk.html Regards, Bob S. [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > Can someone ID this guy for me? > > http://www.bigdayphoto.com/tom/images/hawk.jpg > > tv

Hi, tom wrote: > > Can someone ID this guy for me? > > http://www.bigdayphoto.com/tom/images/hawk.jpg I'm not an expert on North american raptors by any stretch of the imagination but I've been having a trawl. Sharp-shinned hawk looks to be a possibility http://www.hawkmountain.org/education/sharpie.htm (be careful using this site - some pages have _huge_ jpeg thumbnails on) Even better, I think, is a Cooper's hawk. I had an inkling that this is a juvenile and I think the bottom picture on the right is a pretty close match. http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/i3330id.html The page also notes that Goshawk and Sharp-shinned juveniles are similar but have denser belly streaks. My bet is a juvenile Cooper. I will show the pic to an RSPB person and see what they say. mike
