Re: darkroom wish list

2010-10-04 Thread Gasha

Developing film is easy.
You WILL get results in any case :)

To get some quality, then you need practice.

My recipe:
1) go into toilet, put tank on WC, swich off all lights nearby. get
towel to seal remaining light leaks
2) load film (i mostly develop 120 film), sometimes it takes long, if
film curls a lot
3) go to bathroom, measure +20C water by mixing cold+hot, fill 2-3
liters of water
4) fill 330ml water in glas jar, mix with 3ml rodinal (1:100), pour into
tank, mix 1 minute
5) find some marker and write down start time, semi-stand process up to
60 minutes (+10 minutes is OK), go and watch your favorite TV programm,
sometimes mix if you do not forget :)

6) discard rodinal, wash 2-3 times with water
7) take bottle with fixer, pour in, and wait 5 minutes, mixing
sometimes, then open tank lid, look if film is still milky wait
another 2-5 minutes. do not forget to put back fixer into bottle, do not
discard

8) mess with lot of tap water for some 10-15 minutes, to wash all chemicals
9) get bottle with distilled water as last bath for film
10) hang it for drying, wondering what you have shot, and what went wrong

Your question was for developing film (not making prints) so I'm going
to suggest a changing bag. You don't even need a darkroom to develop
film if you have a daylight developing tank (which they ALL are these
days) and a changing bag.

In that case, you need a dark bag/box for loading your film into the

Precysol develop and archival fix from photoforumulary! Or PMK Pyro. If you do
this or other 1-shot developers from concentrate, get some syringes for
measuring the stuff. They sell them at the local drug store (for dispensing
medicine to infants). Plastic sleeve pages for the negatives. Stainless steel
clips (some weighted with lead) for hanging the film in the bathroom.

I don't do the squeege. And I use photoflo to prevent water spots.

Are you scanning the negs or using an enlarger? Whichever, an antistatic dust
brush is important.

I have some tests of different films and developers on my blog.

two graduates (one for developer, one for fixer; as I will only mix
what is needed for the batch I'm working on) ... what size do you all
think I should get for these. If I'm only ever going to do two rolls
of film at a time, will a 150ml grad be enough or should I go for the
300ml?

obviously developer and fixer.

photoflo and squeege, film clips.

what am I forgetting?

Re: darkroom wish list

2010-10-03 Thread Paul Sorenson
If you're only developing film you don't need a darkroom until you
start printing. Get a fairly large changing bag, I think they still
make them. You can load the film from the cassette to a light-tight
tank inside the changing bag and do all the developing/fixing/washing in
the room with the lights on. I always found it easier to load the film
onto the reels and into the tank with a bag compared to doing it in a
darkroom. Must have something to do with being able to see where my
hands were.

JCO, I won't be printing for now. I have absolutely no space for a
real darkroom. We're living in a 30-foot camper while we tear down and
rebuild our house (but I'm definitely making space for a darkroom in
the new house), so safelights etc aren't needed at this point. I'll
just have to be happy scanning my negs.

Been poking around and found some info that indicates one roll of film
takes 300ml of solution. But it seemed to me they were talking about
the plastic paterson tanks. Will a single roll in a stainless tank
take that much solution?

Jeffery, thanks for mentioning the timer, can't believe I forgot that.
Also I prefer Kodak T-Max developer and Ilford's Rapid Fix, but thanks
for the suggestions.

Re: darkroom wish list

2010-10-03 Thread Nick Wright
My plan exactly.

Adorama does still sell changing bags in two different sizes. Not much
money. Great for the person who wants to develop film but has no dark
places to do it ... like me!

In the past I've used both darkrooms and changing bags. I'm
comfortable either way.

Now doing color in dip and dunk tanks where you have to spend the
entire development cycle in the dark? That I never cared for.
