Some digital cameras cool the CCDs to reduce noise, but I don't know if that's true of the snapshooting cameras or just of the fixed cameras in labs and observatories.

You are a Camera Purchase Consultant? What a cool job. Does it pay well? At 09:07 AM 1/17/03, Rick Diaz claimed: Then theres the question of hyping something the very same person is prone to. I have to second that.. Unfortunately in my consulting business, my people who came to me for advise on digitals did so because they heard from the pros they read from the magazines saying that results from digitals are better than 35mm. They take that as if a digital camera will not make the same photographic blunders just because it is digital. That is simply not true. Many people who went digitals simply went because of the attractive cost of savings in film development and filing. Companies use them to enhance the bottom line. People sometimes get very enthusiastic, or too enthusiastic I say. Just looking at the recent stock market rise and crash, we see that people are easily tricked into all the hype and glory, only to be told the truth after they are bought into the hype itself, just like whoever bought into Nortel or Enron. If that member insists on making this a political forum, we have a problem, just as I do with members from everywhere else who want to make this a political forum. This is a Pentax list. There are many many places on the Internet where politics have their place. This is not such a place. Or if one of those journalists who will be reporting from the upcoming war would be using Pentax equipment? I would welcome reports about how the equipment performs in the field, as it would be on-topic. If the journalist begins ranting about the polotics of the war, it would be off-topic. This is really not difficult to understand. Can questions of life and death really be OT for the PDML family? This war will have effects on all of us - be it relatives being in combat, more or less terrorism, the international law being rewritten by the only left world power, or simply fellow men, women and children being killed. The one thing being really off topic is insulting fellow PDML members - something that has happened in the course of discussions on Pentax equipment, too. We all must controll our emotions when posting to the PDML. We must respect each others opinions. If that would be possible I would welcome a PDML discussion on the legitimacy of the upcoming war as much or more than a discussion about what Pentax short telephoto lenses are the best. If we can't discuss Pentax with civility, what makes you think a discussion of war would be civil? Again, there are plenty of places on the Net for such discussions. Am I allowed to buy it, or do I have to pass because I don't spend enough time on ebay? How much online time do I have to devote to ebay before I qualify for bargains? Re: Megapixels required for an 8X10 print?
my own personal opinion, Bruce (and it's just between the two of us), having shot a few miles of MF and a few more miles of 35mm, is that a good photo will overcome its format. Doug At 9:53 PM -08002/10/03, Bruce Dayton wrote, or at least typed: Doug, Yeah, I was trying to figure out exactly what he was saying. I was commenting based on actual experience of taking high quality 35mm shots with good films and good lenses and good technique compared to the same thing done with medium format. Before I shot medium format I was always trying to justify to myself that 35mm was good enough for enlargements (beyond 8X10), but finally having made the move, I can say for myself that MF is significantly better looking in the larger prints. That doesn't mean there isn't a time and place where 35mm is the best choice, just that a bigger negative makes for a better bigger picture. My guess is that you just wanted to spread a little of your homophobia and now you're incensed that someone takes issue with it. I don't think anyone outside your community of small-minded homophobes know that. here's something else you already know: some Gays, just like other men, are aggressive. A single man drifting around in a warehouse full of flowers taking pictures would draw attention, as if the person was cruising. So if you were alone in a camera shop looking at cameras, would a gay camera shop employee think you were there because you wanted to have sex with him? Or is this behavior confined to florists? If so, again, does it also apply to heterosexual florists? Is this part of the florists' training? You ought to try going around florists, see if it what I observed is true. You might get thrill. The florists I know are professional, no matter their orientation. Nothing like making an issue of an innocent observation. Your observation was not innocent. Re: www.pdml.net getting worse
It's a conspiracy. There are dozens of computer operators sitting around waiting for a search request to come down the pipe. When it does, they choose which of the messages shall be returned with full text and which only get the headline treatment. What's really impressive is that this is all done in a matter of tenths of seconds. These are highly skilled conspirators, able to discern which search terms are more important to you, based entirely on the way you enter them. The more important terms, as you have no doubt noticed, are those that only return titles. Okay, back here on Earth, here's what's really happening: Mail-Archive.com is working on their software. It is hoped that the current work will clear up some problems with the service, and they have made some other decisions that should make things a bit more efficient. Personally, I prefer the conspiracy theory, as it's so much more dramatic. Re: What's Wrong With the PDML Server?
Whatever problems going on at mail-archive.com have absolutely nothing to do with the PDML server. The PDML server is fine. There is nothing wrong with the PDML server. One more time: The PDML server is healthy and happy. I spend a lot of time and not a little money keeping the PDML server fed and happy and it is running very smoothly right now, and I am beginning to resent that any time a service over which I have no control gets, in some people's opinion, behind in its VOLUNTARY service, I get the blame. Both the PDML and the separate organization that handles our archiving are brought to you by people who feel that both are worthwhile. They are both brought to you at no charge. If you have problems with either service that are insurmountable, there is only one course of action. Demand your money back. Doug At 7:14 PM -070011/12/01, Joseph Tainter wrote, or at least typed: To maintain my e-mail sanity (or as much as possible), I read and participate in PDML on the web site, not as e-mail. It happened a few months ago, then 3 or 4 weeks ago, then again this month. That is, it is becoming more frequent. Now it has caught up to Nov. 10, but it seems that about 2/3 of the messages are missing. When I click on a heading, I get a Not Found message from the server. Does anyone know what is happening? Can anything be done to convince whoever maintains the server to do a better job? My ability to participate has essentially been nil over recent weeks. Re: WHY NOT A NUMBERED INDEX???
Haven't I answered this before? The huge reason is that majordomo does not have this capacity. Since it doesn't, someone would have to build a hack. That someone would have to be someone other than me, because A.) I have no time and B.) I have no interest in spending the time to build a redundancy into the digest subject list and, of course, C.) I'd have to teach myself perl scripting before I could even begin to attack something as relatively temperamental as the majordomo digesting procedure. Which brings us back to A. I could see the need for an index on the digest, and I worked hard to get it done. Frankly, I don't see numbers as any sort of improvement; it's no harder to search for a word string than it is to search for a number string. However, if someone else wants to build it, test it and explain to me how to install it, I'll see what I can do. Doug At 7:43 AM -050011/15/01, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote, or at least typed: Several times I've written and asked why this site cannot use a numbered index. There is a problem with the digest, and it's being addressed. Thanks, Doug At 02:13 PM 10/3/02 -0400, you wrote: I'll tell you know - the answer's probably. I've not been getting any digests for the last two days. I switched one of my e-mail accounts to individual mails and that works okay. Now, I'm just seeing if I can post from it. I un-subbed and re-subbed my other address, which seemed to work, but I still don't get any digests. I tried posting from that address and the only response was from Max Mcrae's out-of-office manager - I didn't get the message through on the address which is receiving individual mails! There is a digest issue that's being worked on. thanks, Doug At 12:33 PM 10/3/02 +0200, you wrote: For Doug the list guy; several people have problems with their normal subscriptions. Is there any info we can pass on? Best, Jostein -- Original Message -- From: Cotty [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2002 11:05:19 +0100 Hi Jostein, Is it me or is the PDML down yet again? I'm getting no digests, so I subbed to the normal list and did a test, which I saw, so resubbed to digest, but nothing yet. Cotty

yeah, that may be true, but the bad news is that the nikon list is populated by mindless wienies. At 01:24 PM 10/9/02 -0400, you wrote: snip So, I got this from the Nikon list (which can take a lickin' but keep on tickin' - sorry Doug): more snippage

Of course it does. I've never had a single problem with Pentax service. Re: Photographic Training
Don't tell anyone I was taking a break from working on the list. Some people think I'm not allowed. You can call volume portraiture a lot of things, but boring it ain't. You do learn a lot about lighting and posing, and you learn to make quick decisions. Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't know if you have the temperament for that kind of work. Hard to answer you on the other part of your message. Been a long time since I had a dud roll, but I'm a guy who edits as he shoots, so I don't have many frames I didn't intend to have. That said, you should really, at this point, wait until after you get the rolls back before deciding if they're duds. Even then, it's really difficult to read negatives, so you may want to investigate slides as a way to judge your progress. Interesting you brought up the 'volume portrait biz'. I was looking at looking into..heh...doing that. Personally, I would find it boring, but one would learn quite a lot about lighting and such, in the least eh? As well as positioning your subject too. I could use that help! Heck, I'd be willing to be an assistant for free. (Truth, people pictures scare me, I like just about everything else) One other thing that sort of applies to your message. I've shot a lot, and want to shoot much more. I've found that with certain rolls or trips or events, I think, 'They aren't going to be good' so I take the roll to someplace cheap. When I think I've got something good, I take it to a good photofinisher. Is anyone else like that? I'll admit that some of the shots on the 'bad' roll, actually are quite good. I've never had any problems with the cheap ones, except the Price Club (Costco), where I tried twice to get some Fuji HG 1600 film processed and they were more like test rolls, and both times, their dumb machine ripped my negatives to shreds. So I guess what I'm going after is, do any of you get the feeling you have a 'dud' roll and don't want to pay top dollar to have it processed? Or should I, despite the cost, always go to my trusted photofinisher? Re: Brad's Pentax Gripe Gets Nasty ;-)
Good grief, a boat from Japan to Canada sank in the Atlantic Ocean? That would take some serious doing. Brad, just order from someone else. You could have ordered it from a hundred other outlets by now. Doug At 04:22 PM 10/30/02 -0500, you wrote: Hey folks, Well, today, went in to my camera store and ripped two salespeople up and down about my release cable CS-130. They pulled the order form. Dated August 9th 2002. So I said that was complete unreasonable, since it's October 30th. I talked to one of the owners. In carefully phrased terms he sounded like he didn't want to deal with Pentax. They called the so-called 'Pentax Canada' and again said they were out. Apparently it was on order from Pentax Canada from Japan, but the boat it came by sank in the Atlantic Ocean ;-) j/k This store I use is the best in the city, they handle all the professionals, and they work closely with the University under contract. What is going on with Pentax?? Does anyone here think am I wrong for waiting too long on a simple item, ordered on August 9th has still not even arrived on October 30th, at Pentax Canada, is unreasonable? It makes me sick to my stomach. So the store and 'Pentax No-Canada are going to try other businesses in the region that may stock it. Unbelievable. I should not have to deal with this. Looks to me like they don't want my business. I'm being to wonder. Peeved Once More, Brad ** Brad W. Dobo, HBA (Eds.) Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ#: 1658
Re: The List...
I have several Macs, thanks. But if you want, I'd like one of those dual G4 rigs with a flat screen and a graphics pad. Send it to my home. Of course, the list is run on a big Unix box, so maybe you can get me one of those. That would be cool. Let's think about this. If the archives are working, then the list has to be working, since the archive is just a subscriber to the list. Perhaps you should look on your end and see if your Outlook or your ISP is glitched. I know it's much easier to blame me and toss a little barb this way, but it's really not a good way to get me to see if I can give you a hand. Doug if the list ain't working, why send a post to the list saying it ain't working? At 11:57 PM 10/30/02 -0800, you wrote: She's a no go again. Archive OK, mailings no Time to get a Mac, Doug.
