[PEIRCE-L] Call for Papers - Peirce and logic
Dear fellow listers, Please, take notice of the following call for papers, a joint initiative of the Latin American Peirce Society and the Center for Pragmatism Studies from São Paulo, Brazil. Submissions in Portuguese, Spanish and English are all accepted. More information in English and in Spanish bellow. Best regards, cass. Call for papers: PEIRCE AND LOGIC – special issue of COGNITIO: REVISTA DE FILOSOFIA. A joint special publication of the Centro de Estudos de Pragmatismo (CEP-PUC-SP) and the Sociedad Latinoamericana Peirce (SLP). guest-editors: Cassiano Terra Rodrigues (ITA-BR) y Jorge Alejandro Flórez R. (Universidade de Caldas-CO). C. S. Peirce’s importance for logic has been greatly rediscovered in the 21st century. On the one hand, Peirce not only developed deductive logic in the Boolean tradition as he also laid the ground for further developments by logicians like Tarski and Skolem, among others. On the other hand, Peirce’s pioneering work in semiotics is incomparably general, going far beyond the classificatory caricature to which it is commonly reduced to reach out contemporary problems in the fields of methodology, linguistics, the philosophy of language, design theory, and even further. From all that, Peirce developed highly original responses to a myriad of questions concerning logic, and even new and interesting ways to pose the questions themselves: what is the nature of reasoning? How meaning is generated? How to effectively criticize our own illations? What are the underlying inferential steps of any logical processes? What is the leading principle underlying the passage from premises to conclusion? And many others more. As commonly known, the development of his (not all of them equally finished) systems of logic deal not only with necessary forms of reasoning but included (most notably) probable and defeasible forms of reasoning. So, Peirce’s work emerges as a rich source of inspiration to everyone interested in logic. The editors invite submissions on any topic in accordance with the theme of this special issue. We encourage proposals that explore the relevance and originality of Peirce’s thought from the perspective of current questions and problems in logic that identify the leading edge of Peirce studies. Suitable topics include, but are not limited to: - Peirce and the history of logic; - Logic and mathematics; - The philosophy of logic and logic as semiotics; - Logic and scientific methodology, specially nonmonotonicity; - Logical pluralism and truth; - The logic of belief and decision procedures, including common-sense; - Normativity and logic; - Syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of formalism; - Diagrams, diagrammatic reasoning, models, and modalities; - Existential graphs and graphic logic; - Logic and phenomenology; - Logic and probability; - Logic and the philosophy of language; - The relevance of logic to human life; - Peirce’s work in the present and the future of logic. Guidelines to authors: Articles will be accepted in *.docx format, but a PDF is also required to double-check the symbols. Due to technical restrictions, *.tex files cannot not be accepted. Idioms accepted: Spanish, Portuguese, English. Abstracts in the three languages are welcome. We kindly ask for everyone to follow the guidelines from the journal page to make the publication process faster. Please, check the Guidelines for Authors at: https://revistas.pucsp.br/index.php/cognitiofilosofia/about/submissions . For any further information, please contact the Guest-editors at: slapei...@gmail.com . Dissemination on the institutional page: Https://revistas.pucsp.br/index.php/cognitiofilosofia/announcement/view/572 <https://revistas.pucsp.br/index.php/cognitiofilosofia/announcement/view/572> Dates: The limit for submitting articles is March 31st, 2023. The special issue is expected to be published in 2023, depending on the article evaluation process.

[PEIRCE-L] Life line extension for Creativity and Logic in/of Charles Sanders Peirce
Dear Listers, We are still receiving submissions for the workshop *Creativity and Logic in/of Charles Sanders Peirce* until the end of September. A description of the workshop can be found here: https://sites.google.com/view/creativity2019/workshops/creativity-inof-peirce The workshop will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 8 to 13 December 2019, during the * Creativity 2019 - 1st World Congress of the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy in Honor of Newton da Costa 90th Birthday. *More info on the event can be found by following the link below: https://sites.google.com/view/creativity2019/welcome I'm sure some of you do, but for those who don't know Newton da Costa, a brief presentation can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton_da_Costa For a while, Newton da Costa used to call quasi-truth by the name of pragmatic truth, and his approach is clearly influenced by the spirit of CSP's ideas (and heavily so also by WJames's as well, my guess). Thanks for your kind attention and looking forward to seeing you in Rio :) Best wishes, cass. - PEIRCE-L subscribers: Click on "Reply List" or "Reply All" to REPLY ON PEIRCE-L to this message. [PEIRCE-L] Peirce's adjectives (just for fun)
Hello fellow listers, It's been a while I notice Peirce has some great nouns of his own pen, frequently used in ironic contexts. For instance, besides pragmaticism, I could mention projaculation in Evolutionary Love, or maybe the nychtemeron in the article on God's Reality (tough this is not really Peirce's, it's Gospel's). But I was wondering, and about adjectives? Do you notice preferred adjectives in Peirce's vocabulary? He uses First, Second and Third as adjectives, of course, but I mean real adjectives, or adjectival expressions. Ironic or not. Maybe other preferred expressions, for exclamations etc.? I assume there has been previous discussion on Peirce's style in the list, so excuse me if I am being tautological. But I think the recurrent expressions a writer uses reveal a lot, especially adjectives and other seemingly unimportant idiomatic expressions. And it's always fun to know what others regard as interesting in an admired writer's style. So, apart from the more deep stuff, if anyone is willing to share their preferred Peircean quotes, but in the sense above, I'm an interested reader.
