[pestlist] Anoxia

2009-10-06 Thread David Pinniger
Everybody should read Selwitz and Maekawa, Getty 1998, and the more recent,
Maekawa and Elert Getty 2003, as the definitive works on Anoxia.
Let us keep the science clear of rhetoric and anecdote!
I have a copy of the Save Art Veloxy project. it should be archived in the EEC
somewhere.
Veloxy works when you use it properly but it has practical limitations on
treating large objects because of the flow rates at low O2 levels.

A FTIR was use in the research to determine when insects species die at what
ppm, temperature and in what time frame. Test were done on actual Art objects.
Also about 25% of time was added as protection. Another protection to bring the
ppm range lower than needed. In some cases you can see the insect after
treatment in other cases like European powder post beetle you may not.

I AM interested in this discussion, and feel it is pertinent to the
list as there are not too many suppliers of the type of equipment used
for this process, and those considering using it or who already have
it want to know the facts concerning its effectiveness (since this has
 been called into question.)

What do you and others feel IS the appropriate time and place for this
type of question if not a public list-serve specifically about
treatments for eradicating/preventing infestations of pests?

When a particular discussion is not useful to me (and there are many),
I just do not read it and then delete any with the same thread as soon
 they appear in my e-mail.

  Dear friends of PESTLIST,
I red from home (because a flue) the
astonishing message of Dr. Basset concerning Veloxy; I will write as
soon as possible a message to everybody of you showing the references
of the equipment that was developed , certified and that is
successfully applied in the list of Conservation Institutes that are in
our references at the web site : www.rgi-genova.com.
  In my next message
I will list the persons that can be contacted to know exactly if VELOXY
had problems in their Conservation Institues.
  As the matter of the
facts, Dr. Basset has not used Veloxy, until now, because it was
crashed during the transport from Italy to France and for this reason,
could not jet be installed at the National Library de France in Paris.

I have no idea why Dr. Basset, to whom I have a lot of respect, informs
all of you that there are some problems in Veloxy system.

we have been trying to install Integrated Pest Management in our
institution. We have found information very interesting about this issues,
especially in museumpest.net. n very thanked for if they show an application
to me in his institutions of the Policies Document. I need an example
adapted to a real case.

Thank you very much by its attentions.

Dear Mr. Trey Crumpton,

Concerning your info demand we would like to inform you about our options on
pesticide-free disinfestations systems, namely:

- EXPM6 Anoxia chamber, that can work with nitrogen or CO2, it is a
permanent apparatus stainless steel made of - you may find commercial info
with PEL-UK - www.preservationequipment.co.uk
http://www.preservationequipment.co.uk/

- EXPM3Light Anoxia Chamber with nityrogen producing system - if you would
be interested we can send you the technicall and commercial info

- Heavy-duty Freezer - depending on the temperature and dimensions needed,
we can provide you a quotation

Feel free to ask for any further information.

Kind regards,

2009/10/2 Crumpton, Trey trey_crump...@baylor.edu

I am looking into writing a grant for a walk-in freezer and/or a CO2 chamber
to treat a large number of history and natural history objects (I am
considering a permanent apparatus that would be kept around for future use
by the museum, though a portable unit is always an option). I was wondering
if anyone has gone through this process recently, or would have specs and
pricing on such items. I'd like to have some insight into issues or
problems involved (i.e. finding a freezer that can get down to -25 and stay
there).

Any comments will be appreciated,

Trey Crumpton

Here is a link to one article about determining effectiveness of
anoxia treatments for museum objects based on their ability to kill
insects in the core of various materials.

http://arxiv.org/ftp/physics/papers/0611/0611199.pdf

As you all know, there is much more info available about results of
testing with different treatments.

Because we can not take apart or saw through our museum objects, we
need to rely on independent testing done by legitimate researchers in
the field. Based on their findings we can hopefully trust that insects
that can't be seen will be successfully killed in all their stages if
the same procedures they used are carefully followed.

I deal with books and paper so the insects and their larvae we are
concerned about are quite visible under 10X magnification and do not
hide inside of a three dimensional object that can not be readily
opened and thoroughly inspected.

Respectfully,
Sharlane G.
