Tom’s suggestion will lower the relative humidity in the cabinets by raising
the temperature. However, conservators would generally advise against raising
the temperature in a contained environment and instead using something like
desiccated silica gel to lower the RH. Given that most herbaria cabinets are
well sealed that should also work to make the environment less hospitable.

Dr. Rauf -
Two weeks ought to be sufficient to dry everything out and kill all these
delicate pests. Then use foam weather-stripping around the door frames and
tape any open screw holes. Make sure the interior bottom panel is sealed.

Amy -
Simply put a 100 watt light bulb in the cabinet and close it up. The heat
generated by the light bulb will slowly dry out the materials and that will be
the end of the psocids.

Hello,
I am curious what others are using in their collections for general pest
control and if anyone has had psocids visiting their collections. I’ve just
discovered psocids in an insect and herbarium cabinet and am interested in
finding out if anyone else has had this issue and how it was corrected.
Thank you,
Amy K. Miller
