[Phono-L] Claude Wolledge Edison Dealer Christchurch NZ
Hi Steve, yes I have seen those machines you mentoned. In George Frows book you will see Claude Wolledges Amberola 30, I know of a few in Chirstchurch. Edison not interested at the time. The Amberola 80 was here in Hawkes Bay for a while, now resides in Dunedin in Tony McCarthys collection. Once belonged to Wallly Golledge of Nelson. Veteran phono collectors from way back may have known of Wally. I used to stay with him in Nelson some twenty years ago. There is a 60 in Nelson that belongs to Roger Cole. Edison Hall in Christchurch home to Dealer Claude Wolledge is no more. Remember seeing it and the date of 1929 on a concrete facade. The earhquakes took care of that! A collector friend had a table model diamond disc land on top of his cherished HMV Monarch Senior. Eqalivent to that of a Victor 6 ? Smashed the horn beyond repair, so so sad.Has anybody got an english HMV speartip horn lying around that is of no use? Wonder how many machines and collections have been lost this way. Your Hurricane season for instance! So I take it that Union will be held on the 8,9, and 10th of June 20012. Hey I would love to help out with folk setting up there stalls at Union. May need a sofa or a camp stretcher to sleep on. Kiwis come out at night nocturnal, and peck at phonographs! Ha Ha. When I was in my twenties, I stayed with Elmer Jones and his wife Juanita, in Glendora West Orange. What a lovely man. Both sadly have gone! I bought back a cygent horn, in a green rubbish bag on the plane! HELL, I went though. Should have bought back a dozen! Love the Arts and Crafts Art Nouveau movement and impact it had on talking machines, especially those from Europe. Would love to see some examples on here, if possible.NZ was dominated by engllish HMV. Got a Victor 3, and 4. Looking for a nice Victor 5 without the horn if poss! The horn is sitting on the floor staring at me, looking for a mate! Still looking for a nice example of a Amberola 5. Have the Amberol a BV111. They call it a cake tin? Mine has the complete top bedplate all in one piece with the stuffs of grass on all four corners, I believe hard to find? Love to corresponde with folk from all over the world. Time to play the Song of the Prune again. Frank Crummit, love his records. Cheers Mark Dawson NZ. slowp...@clear.net.nz ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org
Re: [Phono-L] Claude Wolledge Edison Dealer Christchurch NZ
HI Mark, It's good to hear of all those wonderful machines in New Zealand. And the earthquake obviously was devastating to collections in Christchurch. I wish I had known of the collectors in Christchurch and Dunedin when I was there a few years ago. But I did manage to hook up with Rod Corn near Auckland. He has a wonderful collection of phonos and music boxes. He has a terrific EMG machine which he played for me. And thousands of 78 records that he wanted me to organize for him. That would have been hard to do in the one day I spent with him! You hadn't mentioned him, but I am assuming you know of him. He has a great sense of history being the head of the local historical society. We have a chapter of MAPS here in Colorado. When you come to Union you are welcome to come and visit Colorado and Denver. We all have our versions of weird machines! --Art Heller, Old West Antique Phonograph Society In a message dated 7/18/11 2:17:43 A.M. [Phono-L] auction fees
Thanks to all who gave info about auction fees. I asked for their take to be 20% and to put a reserve on the Hexaphone and Zonophone (worth thousands each). THe auctioneer, WOODBURY Auctions then declined...tells ya somethin! I realized later, that a ringer could come in and buy my multi-thousand machines for a few hundred and make off like a bandit if I didn't have a reserve! At first they asked for 35% + shipping costs, then went down to 25% with no charge for shipping. BUT, the mention of reserve suddenly turned them off. Just something to think about...RESERVES are very very important. They may be a put-off to some, but to the seller are critical and I'm very grateful for the replies I got here. Thanks folks, many thanks!!! Ger If anyone hears of an auction or buyer willing to take on my collection fairly, please let me know...still would like to clear it out (northwest CT)...for real this time. ;) Besides the Hex and Zono, there are 4 Edisons, a Vic, a Herbert (reproducer area incorrectly fixed), over a dozen horns including one extra large round brass, a bunch of parts, and over 500 records, about half of which look like decent blue Amberols (a couple of other odd ones too some good wax). Everything is catalogued, including a few dozen fat flat records and a Diamond Disc head with diamond. I've had offers for the 2 main machines, but don't want to be cherry-picked. :) PS: For any one who finds some of the discussion here unrelated to their immediate situation, I suggest that rather than drop out totally, get put on daily digest...it works well for me, and I actually enjoy it. Re: [Phono-L] auction fees
You should contact one of the Antique Phonograph Societies in your area (preferably a maps chapter) and have a delegation of the members come out there. Their members are very knowledgable and will give a fair price for your items, and won't rip you off. They are collectors, not someone trying low ball everything and then resell it for a huge profit. That way you avoid all the pretenders, and the rip off artists. Cash and carry, no advertising, no middle man, no commissions, just cash money, to take your precious stuff away where it will have a good home. - Original Message - From: ge...@comcast.net To: phono-l@oldcrank.org Cc: ge...@comcast.net Sent: Monday, July 18, 2011 1:48:31 PM Subject: [Phono-L] auction fees Thanks to all who gave info about auction fees. [Phono-L] auction fees
You should contact one of the Antique Phonograph Societies in your area (preferably a maps chapter) and have a delegation of the members come out there. Our members are very knowledgable and will give a fair price for your items, and won't rip you off. They are collectors, not someone trying to low ball everything and then resell it for a huge profit. That way you avoid all the pretenders, and the rip off artists. Cash and carry, no advertising, no middle man, no commissions, just cash money, to take your precious stuff away where it will have a good home. - Forwarded Message - From: ge...@comcast.net To: phono-l@oldcrank.org Cc: ge...@comcast.net Sent: Monday, July 18, 2011 1:48:31 PM Subject: [Phono-L] auction fees Thanks to all who gave info about auction fees. [Phono-L] Rare, unusual and tough to come by Cylinder Phonograph records for sale
I mailed this list a while back about starting to sell off and auction of my cylinder record collection. I currently have about 100 or so late 4xxx series and 5xxx series Blue Amberols listed on ebay. Please go take a look at them. My userid is tinfreakI am known to many of you on this list since a number of years and have moved geographically over time from the US to Europe and am now in Asia. I have been on ebay for 14 years with a 100 pct track record. The records will be shipped from my home in Phuket, Thailand. Shipping is a bit expensive (although.. comparable prices to shipping international FROM the USA to elsewhere), the first record is $11.25, and each additional record $2. My experience tells me that for batches over 50, the average shipping price per record can come down to $1.50-$1.75 IN ADDITION, I am offering the following unusual, rare, or hard to come by batch of records to the list on a first come, first serve basis.
