Can you guys let me know what types of 78 rpm puzzle records you own, if any?
I am trying to make an estimate of the different types that were produced.
So far, I have found a variety of horse race records, one with a numbers game,
one with boat races, a tango record, various Australian Regal records, English,
Argentine and Spanish song records, an HMV record for parties with a gentleman's
side and a ladie's side, an HMV limerick record, a Jimmie Rodgers puzzle record,
Victor puzzle record #1, HMV puzzle records #1 #2, Zonophone puzzle record #2,
a 1910 Zonophone coronation record... have I missed anything else??? Somehow, I
have become OCD on these.

I have...

GALA (Gala Record Company New York)
Full Tone Recording
Made in U.S.A. Pats. Applied For

Side No. 101-A
Turf Derby (The Racing Record)
Running today: Jester, War King, Jamesboy Pacemaker

Side No. 101-B
Motorboat Race (The Racing Record)
Sea Queen, Rex, Vergemeer, Silver Belle

Distributed by Novelty Record Company, New York City

This disc has a crack from edge to center hole, but plays through.

Is anyone interested in it before I consider putting it on Eboy?
Make a fair offer... Off list, please!

[Phono-L] Wanted - John Burke, Irish Tenor recordings...

2011-06-20 Thread Graham Newton

Hello All...

I'm Looking for more information and recordings by:-

John Burke, Irish Tenor, recorded in 1920 and 1921.

(the name and dating is correct from family)

Two known recordings apparently are:-

MOLLY BRANNIGAN B/W LOW BACK'D CAR

GOD MADE IRELAND A NATION B/W WRAP THE FLAG AROUND ME BOYS
LABEL, ARTO #3063 RECORDED IN 1921

Rust's American Record Label Book lists ARTO and TRIANGLE but the above
number range is not referenced.

From investigations that I have done, it seems that one *MAY* have recorded
their discs in such a way as to make them playable on EITHER a vertical
(example, as made by Edison) or a lateral phonograph as made by Victor and most
of the other phonograph manufacturers. This attempt however, appears to result
in lower recording levels and higher groove noise.

Does anyone have any of these in their collections?

[Phono-L] Cartoon music from commercial 78 record releases...

2010-05-05 Thread Graham Newton

Sorry if this is a duplicate, but I posted a while ago and didn't see it ion
the list, so

Can anyone identify the remainder of these tunes?

A few years ago (2003 to be exact!), a question was asked about music heard on
a variety of cartoons that were seen frequently on early TV and have been
issued in collections of early cartoons. I posted mp3s of them on my website
and four out of nine were identified back then by some very knowledgeable
collectors including Vincent Fitzpatrick, John Wilby, Piet Schreuders
(Beauhunks), David Lennick, and Vince Giordano (Nighthawks).

Apparently vocals were cut out for the cartoon use, which added to the
confusion, and were definitely a surprise, although it makes ultimate sense.

So far these have been ID'd:-

http://67.210.127.4/TRACK1.mp3
Fascinatin' Vamp - Nat Shilkret Victor Orchestra , Victor 21431
CONFIRMED

http://67.210.127.4/TRACK3.mp3
George Olsen, Where'd You Get Those Eyes. Victor, 1926.
The vocal has been cut out. It would have started at 1:32.
CONFIRMED

http://67.210.127.4/TRACK5.mp3
George Olsen. Victor. Just a Little Thing Called Rhythm.
The vocal is cut out at 1:30.
CONFIRMED

http://67.210.127.4/TRACK7.mp3
Meadowlark. George Olsen, on Victor, 1926
CONFIRMED

http://67.210.127.4/TRACK8.mp3
Dancing Shadows, band is Paul Whiteman. The sax solo
is by Frank Trumbauer.
CONFIRMED

I still think they could turn out to be ALL from Victor. I believe for a while
they were licensing their commercially released recording material to anyone
who wanted to pay to use it, which is how some of it appeared in cartoons
that otherwise wouldn't have had a sound track. Much cheaper than hiring a
composer and an orchestra to write music to fit the picture!

These were copied from tracks of cartoons, probably originally silent, that
had a sound track added later to extend their marketability as sound became
the standard.

The following tunes are as yet still unidentified... please listen to them
and see if anything sounds familiar:-

[Phono-L] Victor catalogs...

2006-12-24 Thread Graham Newton

Here are two nice clean Victor catalogs on EBAY:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2228541294category=38030

1943 Catalog of Victor and Bluebird records
Red Seal, Victor and Bluebird records The Music America Loves Best
Over 500 pages, this HUGE catalog has a variety of alphabetically listed
sections including Orchestras, Vocal Artists, Composers etc., and a title
index of the records produced by Victor. It contains cover photos of many
of the album sets available in 1943, and is a storehouse of information
about RCA Victor's recorded music offerings not seen in other similar
catalogs of the era.

This gently used book is in excellent condition, its binding is intact and
pages are in clean condition. As with any 60+ year old book like this, the
edges of the pages are browned but not brittle.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2228537060category=38030

1924 catalog of Victor Records
This scarce 80 year old book contains listings of Victor's Black and Blue
label records that were available at the time. It is a strictly alphabetical
listing by title and artist making it easy to find what you are looking for,
and includes pictures of artists of the day with biographical sketches of
them, and a detailed listing of Dance records is included, broken out by type.

Its pages are un-numbered but I estimate it contains over 100 pages. This
book is in excellent condition, its binding is intact and pages are in clean
un-deteriorated condition. There is a small slight stain on the very edge of
the pages, but doesn't extend into the page and for the most part, can't be
seen with the page open. The cover is embossed with the His Master's Voice
logo with Nipper.

information for identity theft) that seems to have started in the past week.
Here's how it works:-

You get a message apparently from an E-bay member who asks for your comment
about a seller who received money and did not deliver goods. The sender says
that he was told you had done business with the person and gives a name.
Here is the one I received, although they may vary the message, you get the
idea of how it works.

COPY OF PHISHING MESSAGE:

Hi, I have recently had a bad transaction with an ebay member. Here are his
details: Christopher Keller,3422 Avenue,New York, 10001.I sent him the
payment for an item and it never arrived. Now he wont reply to my emails.
He said he made transactions on ebay before and you are one of his customers.
I have reported the incident to ebat and to the law authoritiesCan you help
me?Do you know this person?

END OF PHISHING MESSAGE

The message gives you a button to click on to respond to the message via
E-bay BUT IT DOES NOT GO TO E-bay... instead it goes to an E-bay look-alike
webpage in the Ukraine where the phisher gathers your E-bay name and Password.

DON'T FALL FOR IT!

Instead, use your browser's forward feature to forward the entire message
including headers to E-bay at:-

They are VERY interested in shutting down these people before they do some
serious damage!

[Phono-L] Victor Paperweight

On the subject: Victor Paperweight

Genetta and I were out and about this weekend and found a Victor
paperweight in a local antique store. It doesn't appear to be in the
Nipper book... anyone know anything about it or seen one like it
before? Description photos via this link:
 http://homepage.mac.com/loranhughes/PhotoAlbum11.html

A year or two ago, there was a seller on Ebay who offered similar paperweights
that were reproductions... which he conveniently neglected to specify. I only
found this out AFTER buying one and finding that he had all kinds of these
things to sell bearing different antique logos. Clearly he was in the business
of selling Chinese copies!

The one I have is nicely made measuring 4-3/8 x 2-7/8 x 3/4 inches and the back
is covered with black felt.

The dog and phono look like a wood cut drawing and the tiny words

REG. U.S.
PAT. OFF

appear centered between the phono and the dog at the level of the dog's knee.

The word VICTOR is on the side of the phono box.

HIS MASTER'S VOICE is at the bottom in bold type and quote marks, and
immediately underneath that is VICTOR TALKING MACHINE CO. in 1/2 size type.

There is no single stylized word VICTOR on the one I have.

I believe the words His Master's Voice is always presented in quote marks on
legitimate issues of the Victor Talking Machine Company. I would be suspicious
of the stylized word VICTOR since I have never seen the word presented that way
with the curly C, and I would think Victor would be very cautious about their
trademark. I wonder if this could be somebody's earlier reproduction effort?

Like this one? Item # 7242280907.
Yes, EXACTLY, and offered by the same person!

When I originally questioned the seller, a woman named Vicki about the
description she responded in part:-
I bought a (Huge Lot) of these at Auction in Texas
about 8 1/2 years ago. I have been selling just over a year now and since
they were purchased the way they were, I don't truthfully know their age or
 origin!

But even after my questioning, she is still using virtually the same copy, so
she knew she was shading the truth a little!

Regardless, I liked the item and decided to keep it... the origin and age not
being of crucial importance to me.

Rather than felt on the back, mine has an old mirror - and the image/mirror
is fastened in the paperweight with what looks to be plaster. Also, the image
is not a wood cut... more like a newsprint photo. I'm not saying that mine
couldn't be a reproduction, it's just different than the current eBay
 reproductions.
And the plaster might be indicative that it is quite old and probably as good
as an original Victor item, age wise, at least.
