Re: [Phono-L] Victor Junior Reproducer and Other Parts Needed!

2012-05-07 Thread Jeffry Young, D.O.
Okay..., here ya go!

I am from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I live in Green Bay, Wisconsin. At the time this
story begins, my parents were still Iowa residents, living in Cedar Rapids. My
wife Tonya and I have been married for 21 years. She puts up with the
phonograph hobby, treating the phonographs as accessories for decorating.
She likes the friendships more than the machines. That being said, we both have
always loved antiques. That actually was our second date, meeting for coffee on
a Saturday morning and going garage saling.

Thirty minutes east of Cedar Rapids, on the way to Green Bay on highway 151 is
the town of Monticello. There is an antique mall there called the Whiffle
Tree. Anytime Tonya and I travelled back and forth from a visit with my
parents in Cedar Rapids, we would always stop in Monticello and go to the
Whiffle Tree. Now, it so happened that there was an appliance store in town,
R.E.M. Electric. This was mostly an RCA dealership originally. In the summer of
1994 while on our way out of town after going to the antique shop, I noticed
R.E.M. Electric, because there was a large paper mache Nipper in the window. It
was a Saturday. The store was open. So I asked Tonya if we could stop.

Much to my amazement amongst all the TV's, radios, refrigerators, washers and
dryers, was a display area above the office desk of old phonographs, radios,
mixers, toasters, and the like. I met the owner, Rudy Monk. (I am sure his name
was Rudy E. Monk - R.E.M. Electric!) He must have been 75 at the time. We
talked about what was on the shelf. There was a Victor-P, Columbia AU, or
Standard. (I couldn't tell from far away.) There was the case for a Victor-V or
early D, and there was a Victor Junior with a red petaled horn! This was early
enough in my collecting career that I could not tell that it had the wrong
reproducer. It was also turned away from me. There was also a 1916 paper mache
Old King Cole Nipper. (I knew this because it had the studs in the collar,
and glass eyes. They only made this Nipper with the studded collar for 6 months
in 1916. Joan Rolfs had just restored a Nipper for me, and was the source of
that knowledge.) Rudy also explained that he had a wooden horn somewhere, and a
15 and ½ inch coin-op Regina music box.

Of course, nothing was for sale!

Every time that Tonya and I went to Cedar Rapids, I stopped at that store. In
July of 1997, I met Rudy's son Randy, who was soon to be owner of the store.
The meeting was abrupt, curt, and frankly, not very friendly. Despite this,
when I got back to Green Bay, I decided to write him a letter, telling him
exactly what he had, and the retail value at the time. I also said that I was
not a dealer, and if after he became owner of the business, if he ever wanted
to sell one piece, or all of the phonographs, that I was interested. Frankly, I
never thought I would get a reply, but I did not want someone to come in to the
shop someday and sweet talk them out of the machines for hardly anything. That
old thing? It couldn't be worth hardly anything! You know the drill. Rudy E.
Monk passed away comfortably at the age of 90 in 2009.

On Saturday, May 5th, I received a message from my wife that Randy Monk from
R.E.M. Electric in Monticello had called the night before!

I called him almost immediately! Apparently Randy, who was now 62 and deciding
to slow down a little, found my letter while cleaning out his desk drawer! He
was ready to part with his dad's phonographs, and would I still be interested.
Everything was in boxes, but he thought he could get to everything pretty
easily. I left for Monticello at 10:30 AM Saturday, and was back home in Green
Bay by 9:40 PM. I have seen too many deals evaporate because an interested
party could not get to the collection quickly. With my wife's blessing, I
emptied the Mercury Mountaineer, flattened the seats and was off. It takes 4
and ½ hours to get to Monticello from Green Bay.

Well, nothing was as pristine as my mind's eye remembered, but what the heck!
The paper mache Nipper was missing. Randy thought one of his sisters must have
made off with that. Also, one sister had wanted the Regina. After all was said
and done, a deal was struck for a Victor-V with a spear point wooden horn, a
Victor-P, Standard AA, and a Victor Junior with a red petaled horn, sans
correct reproducer. Also with the deal was a mahogany upright VV-90, an oak
table top VV-VIII, a quarter sawn oak sheet music cabinet, and a handful of
uninteresting records.

So..., there you have it! Every collector needs to have at least ONE story like
this! I felt a bit like Cinderella putting on the glass slipper!

Thanks for your interest!

information. Hey, what's your social? Do I have to know you to get that? Make
smartass remarks and you will get them returned. I have time for serious
inquiries only...not people trying to be nosy. IF ALL COLLECTORS WERE LIKE THE
SANDBLASTER RESEARCH WOULD MUCH MORE DIFFICULT AND THERE WOULD BE A LOT LESS
COLLECTORS AS 99.99% WOULD NOT BE COLLECTORS AS 99.99% ARE WONDERFUL PEOPLE. Me:
You are clearly an idiot, serial numbers vital information? I SHOULD NOT HAVE
SAID THIS, MY MISTAKE AND I DO FEEL BAD.
You probably do not know where the serial number is or that the serial number
begins with EM and this reproducer is found only on the machines with a Duncan
stop. Do not write back, I wanted to see if the serial number was higher than
the five of these I have. I collect based on serial numbers.
SB: And if it's not vital, why do you want it? You're the idiot. Go home to your
trailer and grab 'ya a tall one. DUNCAN STOP REPRODUCER WERE MADE WHEN DD
REPRODUCERS HAVE THE SLEEVE IN THE THROAT, THE EARLY ONES HAVE THE SLEEVE.
EDISON CONTINUED TO IMPROVE THE DD REPRODUCER SO THE LATER ONES HAVE BETTER
SOUND. DURING THE TIME WHEN THE DUNCAN STOP WAS BEING MADE ALL EDISON DD
REPRODUCERS HAVE THE BENT LIMIT PIN SO WE HAVE AN IDEA OF WHEN THE DUNCAN
STOPPED BEING MADE, IN THE B SERIES OF THE REGULAR DD REPRODUCER. ALL THIS INO
I HAVE IS BASED ON PEOPLE SHARING SERIAL NUMBERS. THE ONES WITH THE SLEEVE DO
NOT SOUND AS GOOD AS THE LATER ONES.
