[PHP-DB] Interbase help

2001-01-26 Thread Mage

Hello!

I have just installed the Interbase 6.01 on a debian server. I compiled
he php with:
"/configure --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql --with-apache=../apache_1.3.14
--enable-track
-vars --with-interbase=/opt/interbase"

but I get this error message:

"Fatal error: Call to undefined function: ibase_connect() in ..."

Can anyone help me to make the interbase functions work?

Subject: [PHP-DB] MySQL/PHP Form Addslashes() command

Alright, you have a textarea in a form, say some one
right this:

Today, during the meeting blah blah blah... (now they
want to start a new paragraph, so they press enter
twice.)

After the construction meeting blah blah blah...

Ok... Now the question. The addslashes() command
won't add the NULL spots to make it a new paragraph
when you open this row in a page. How do I get that
to work...

Thank You,

James Smith

Odp: [PHP-DB] Problems with character sets

2001-01-26 Thread Jarek Zgoda

Od: "magor" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Temat: [PHP-DB] Problems with character sets

 Hello everybody,
I have problems concerning character sets.I use InterBase database.
 I have data in columns with character set NONE, but the data is in fact in
 win1250 coding. I have other columns with character set WIN1250. I want to
 from these NONE columns to these WIN1250 columns, but InterBase does not
let
 me.

There's only one thing you can do without moving whole data to new -
properly defined - database.
Try to change RDB$CHARACTER_SET_ID in RDB$RELATION_FIELDS, but first do a
backup - it's a system table...

Cheers
Jarek Zgoda

I haven't checked whether your address is currently on the mailing list.
To see what address you used to subscribe, look at the messages you are
receiving from the mailing list. Each message has your address hidden
inside its return path; for example, [EMAIL PROTECTED] receives messages

Some mail programs are broken and cannot handle long addresses. If you
cannot reply to this request, instead send a message to

The "mysql_db_query()" and "mysql_query()" functions only return false (0)
when you have an error in your query or parameter definition, otherwise they
always return a positive result identifier. So, if you must know if is there
any valid record you should ask for the row number returned :
// Check if a valid result has records
if(mysql_num_rows($result)  0){
// stuff
}
else{
// No records procedure
}

Assunto: [PHP-DB] $result = true or false??

Hi,
$db = mysql_connect("localhost", "root");
mysql_select_db("mydb",$db);
$sql = "SELECT * FROM employees where first = '$login'";
$result = mysql_db_query ("mydb", $sql);
echo "$result";

If I run this cose then $result always = Resource id #2 even if $login is
not a member of the database.
Is there anyway I can get it to output true if $login is a member and false
if $login is not a member? or at least get $result to be different if $login
is in the database to that when it is not?

Thanks,

Kevin.

How do I get that
 to work...

 Thank You,

Try converting the ROWID to a character string first:

  select rowidtochar(rowid), field1 from table1

Now you can echo it out or do whatever you would do with a character
string. There's also the Oracle function CHARTOROWID to go the other
way around.

 rowid is an opaque datatype in php. you cannot "output" it
 but only use it for further processing using ocibindbyname().

 There is the "nl2br()" function too :
 // From php manual :

 nl2br -- Converts new lines to HTML line breaks.
 Description

 string nl2br(string string);

 Returns string with 'BR' inserted before all new lines.

Sure, but never add any html tag to the data before insert into the database.
Instead, use this function when you output the text.

Re: [PHP-DB] pop up windows

2001-01-26 Thread Tom Carter

Hi John,

The essential difference between PHP and JavaScript is that PHP is
server-side and JavaScript client side. What this means is that when a
user requests a PHP page, all the functions, commands etc are run on the
server and then sent to the users machine, where as with JS the code is
effectively downloaded to the users machine and then run there.

In practice this means that anything which involves manipulating the users
computer (as opposed to just displaying output, which is what PHP does)
can only be done in JavaScript. Hence pop-up windows, which are
mainuplations of the users machine, are impossible in PHP alone.

However, what is possible, and I've found very powerful, is to use PHP to
create dynamic JS.

Essentially you use PHP to make JS in the same way it makes html

eg.

SCRIPT
alert('?echo($user);?');
/SCRIPT

What would happen here is that the php parser on the server would run
first, and replace the echo statement with the value of $users, and then
return the javascript for the users machine to process, ie the user in
this case would recieve the following (assuming $user="bjorn"):

SCRIPT
alert('bjorn');
/SCRIPT

Hope this helps,

Tom

 I know that this is off the subject, but I am hoping that some would be
 kind enough to tell me what I would like to know. In java script there is
 an alert "command" that will cause a message box to popup. Is there a way
 to do it in php. Better information would be to tell me where I could find
 it in the documentation.

 Thanks,
